Cerise Park looked completely different in winter.
Ash noticed it the moment he stepped through the gates.
Snow covered the paths in a soft blanket, the trees dusted white while strings of warm lights had been hung between the branches. The usual chatter of Pokémon echoed through the park, but tonight there was something different layered over it, music, laughter, and the smell of warm food drifting through the cold air.
A small winter festival had taken over the research park.
Ash grinned.
“Whoa! This place looks awesome!”
Pikachu bounced excitedly on his shoulder.
“Pika pika!”
Nearby, a group of Yamper ran past with ribbons tied around their collars while a few Eevee chased snowflakes near the edge of the lake.
Ash laughed.
“This is way better than the normal lab parties.”
Behind him Chloe adjusted her scarf as she stepped onto the path.
She had only agreed to come because Professor Cerise insisted everyone should take a break from research tonight.
Still. Seeing the park like this was kind of nice.
She watched Ash run ahead toward a row of decorated stalls.
“Hey, look at this!”
He turned back toward her, holding up a cup of steaming cocoa he had somehow already gotten.
Chloe blinked.
“You’ve been here ten seconds.”
Ash shrugged.
“They were giving them out!”
Pikachu nodded proudly.
“Pika!”
Ash held the cup out toward her.
“You want one?”
Chloe hesitated for a moment.
Then accepted it.
“…Thanks.”
The warmth seeped into her hands immediately.
Ash grinned.
“No problem!”
He had already moved on to looking at the next stall.
Chloe watched him for a second.
Ash never changed.
Everything excited him.
Everything fascinated him.
It was one of the things she had noticed early in their travels.
And somehow, it had become strangely comforting.
Eevee hopped down from Chloe’s arms into the snow.
“Vee!”
Pikachu immediately joined her.
The two Pokémon started chasing each other through the powder.
Ash laughed.
“They’re having fun!”
Chloe nodded slightly.
“…Looks like it.”
The music from the festival drifted through the park again.
Trainers and researchers moved between the stalls, chatting and laughing as snowflakes slowly fell around them.
Ash turned toward her again.
“Hey!”
“What?”
“There’s games over there!”
Chloe followed the direction he pointed.
A group of people had gathered around
a booth tossing rings toward small prizes.
Ash grinned.
“Let’s try it!”
Chloe sighed quietly.
“…Of course you want to try it.”
“Come on!”
Ash grabbed her wrist without thinking and pulled her along.
Pikachu and Eevee immediately chased after them.
Chloe didn’t resist.
She rarely did when Ash dragged her into things like this.
A few minutes later Ash was celebrating like he had just won a Pokémon League.
“Yes!”
He held up a small plush toy
triumphantly.
“I got it!”
The stall owner laughed.
“You were determined.”
Ash handed the plush to Chloe.
“For Eevee.”
Chloe blinked.
“…You didn’t want it?”
Ash shrugged.
“I won it for her.”
Eevee immediately jumped up happily.
“Vee!”
Chloe watched the little Pokémon cuddle the toy.
Then glanced at Ash.
“…You’re strange sometimes.”
Ash laughed.
“Thanks!”
“That wasn’t a compliment.”
“Yeah it was!”
Pikachu giggled.
“Pika pika!”
The group started walking again through the decorated park paths.
Lights glowed softly against the snow-covered branches.
Ash stretched his arms.
“This place looks amazing tonight.”
Chloe nodded quietly.
“…It does.”
They turned down a quieter path near the edge of the park where fewer people had wandered.
The lake reflected the lights from the trees like stars scattered across the water.
Ash slowed his pace.
“Whoa…”
Chloe stopped beside him.
“…Yeah.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Snow drifted gently between the glowing branches.
Then Ash noticed something.
“…Hey.”
Chloe looked up.
“What?”
Ash pointed above them.
Hanging from one of the park archways. A sprig of mistletoe swayed lightly in the winter air.
Chloe blinked.
“…Oh.”
Pikachu and Eevee followed their gaze.
“…Pika.”
“…Vee.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck.
“…Huh.”
Chloe looked at the mistletoe again.
Then back at Ash.
Neither of them moved.
The quiet path suddenly felt much smaller.
Ash laughed nervously.
“…That’s awkward.”
Chloe took a small sip of her cocoa.
“…A little.”
They were standing directly underneath it.
And for the first time that evening, neither of them seemed quite sure what to do next.
The mistletoe swayed gently above them.
Snow continued drifting through the branches, catching the soft glow of the lights strung across the park paths.
Ash rubbed the back of his neck.
“…So.”
Chloe held her cup of cocoa a little tighter.
“…So.”
Neither of them moved.
Pikachu glanced up at the mistletoe.
Then at Ash.
Then at Chloe.
“…Pika.”
Eevee tilted her head curiously.
“Vee?”
Ash laughed nervously.
“Well this is… uh…”
He gestured vaguely upward.
“…that thing.”
Chloe nodded.
“Yes.”
Ash looked around the path.
“No one else is here.”
Chloe noticed that too.
The main festival crowd was back near the central plaza.
Out here, it was just the four of them.
Snow. Lights. And the mistletoe hanging above the archway.
Ash scratched his cheek.
“…We could just move.”
Chloe didn’t move.
Ash noticed that.
“…Or not.”
Chloe took another quiet sip of her drink.
“…You’re the one who noticed it.”
Ash laughed softly.
“Yeah.”
Pikachu slowly leaned toward Eevee.
“…Pika.”
Eevee whispered back.
“Vee…”
Ash looked back up at the mistletoe again.
“…You know what that means, right?”
Chloe nodded.
“Yes.”
Ash blinked.
“…You do?”
“I’m aware of the tradition.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck again.
“…Right.”
Chloe watched him for a moment.
Ash looked oddly uncertain.
That didn’t happen often.
He usually rushed into things without thinking twice.
But this time. He was hesitating.
Chloe felt a strange warmth creep into her cheeks.
She glanced up at the mistletoe again.
Then back at Ash.
“…You don’t have to.”
Ash looked at her.
“…What?”
Chloe shrugged slightly.
“It’s just a decoration.”
Ash nodded slowly.
“…Yeah.”
Neither of them stepped away.
The quiet stretched for a few seconds longer.
Snowflakes landed softly in Chloe’s hair.
Ash noticed.
“…You’ve got snow in your hair.”
Chloe brushed it away.
“…Thanks.”
Pikachu nudged Ash’s cheek.
“Pika.”
Ash whispered,
“Not helping.”
Eevee giggled softly.
“Vee.”
Ash exhaled slowly.
“…You know what?”
“What?”
“I think this might be the most awkward thing that’s happened to me today.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow.
“More awkward than when Pikachu shocked the cocoa machine earlier?”
Ash blinked.
“…Okay second most awkward.”
Chloe smiled slightly.
Ash paused.
“…Wait.”
“What?”
“You smiled.”
Chloe looked away.
“…I smile.”
“Not like that.”
Chloe sighed quietly.
“You’re making this weirder.”
Ash laughed.
“…Yeah, probably.”
He glanced at the mistletoe again.
“…But we’re still standing here.”
Chloe nodded.
“…We are.”
Pikachu leaned forward again.
“…Pika.”
Eevee nodded eagerly.
“Vee!”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck once more.
“…So.”
Chloe looked at him.
“…So.”
Ash took a small step forward.
Not enough to close the distance completely.
But enough that the quiet space between them felt different now.
“…Do you mind?”
Chloe blinked.
“…Mind what?”
Ash pointed upward slightly.
Chloe followed his gesture.
The mistletoe swayed again.
She looked back at him.
For a moment she thought about stepping away.
But instead. She shook her head.
“…No.”
And suddenly, the quiet moment between them wasn’t awkward anymore.
Just soft.
And waiting.
The quiet lingered.
Ash stood just a little closer than he had a moment ago.
Chloe could hear the faint sound of the festival music drifting through the park again, but out here along the lakeside path it felt distant, soft and muted beneath the falling snow.
Pikachu and Eevee had gone very still.
“…Pika.”
“…Vee.”
Ash cleared his throat softly.
“…So.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow.
“You’ve said that three times.”
Ash laughed nervously.
“Yeah… I know.”
Snowflakes drifted between them.
Ash looked up at the mistletoe again, then back at Chloe.
“…You’re still not moving.”
Chloe glanced upward once more.
“…Neither are you.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck.
“…Right.”
For a moment neither of them spoke.
But the space between them didn’t feel awkward anymore.
Just quiet.
Ash shifted his weight slightly.
“…Is this weird?”
Chloe thought about it.
“…A little.”
Ash laughed softly.
“Yeah.”
Pikachu leaned forward again.
“Pika.”
Ash whispered,
“I know.”
Chloe watched him carefully.
He wasn’t acting the way he usually did during battles or adventures, confident, loud, excited.
He looked thoughtful.
A little unsure.
And strangely gentle.
It made Chloe’s chest feel warm in a way she hadn’t expected.
Ash finally took a breath.
“…Okay.”
Chloe blinked.
“Okay what?”
Ash pointed upward slightly.
“The rule.”
Chloe followed his gaze again.
The mistletoe swayed in the cold air.
Then she looked back at him.
“…You’re really thinking about it.”
Ash shrugged.
“…Yeah.”
Chloe studied him for a moment.
“…You don’t usually think this hard.”
Ash laughed.
“Hey!”
“It’s true.”
Ash scratched his cheek again.
“…Maybe.”
Pikachu nudged him encouragingly.
“Pika.”
Ash sighed.
“You’re not subtle.”
Eevee giggled.
“Vee.”
Chloe finally took a small step forward.
The distance between them disappeared.
Ash blinked.
“…Oh.”
Chloe’s cheeks warmed slightly.
“…You were taking too long.”
Ash laughed quietly.
“…I’m noticing a pattern with that tonight.”
Chloe tilted her head.
“…What pattern?”
Ash grinned.
“People telling me I hesitate.”
Chloe smiled faintly.
“…You do.”
Ash shook his head.
“…Not this time.”
The snow fell around them in soft
silence.
Then Ash leaned forward.
The kiss was gentle.
Brief.
Soft enough that for a moment it almost felt like another snowflake brushing against the cold air.
Pikachu gasped.
“Pika!”
Eevee’s ears shot up.
“Vee!”
Ash stepped back slightly, blinking.
“…Huh.”
Chloe looked down for a second.
Her cheeks had definitely turned pink now.
“…That was….”
Ash waited.
“…Yeah?”
Chloe finally looked back at him.
“…Nice.”
Ash smiled.
“…Yeah.”
For a moment they just stood there again.
Snow falling.
Lights glowing.
Pikachu leaned toward Eevee.
“…Pika pika.”
Eevee nodded enthusiastically.
“Vee!”
Ash laughed quietly.
“…They’re going to tell everyone.”
Chloe sighed.
“…Probably.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck again.
“…Sorry if that was weird.”
Chloe shook her head.
“…It wasn’t.”
Ash blinked.
“…Good.”
The quiet returned again for a moment.
But this time. It felt lighter. Warmer.
Like something small had changed between them.
And neither of them seemed in a hurry to rush away from it.
The snow kept falling.
Soft flakes drifted through the glowing branches above the lakeside path as
Ash and Chloe stood there for another moment.
Neither of them spoke.
But the silence didn’t feel awkward anymore.
Just quiet.
Pikachu finally broke it.
“…Pika.”
Ash blinked and looked down at him.
“Oh, right.”
Eevee bounced lightly in the snow.
“Vee!”
Chloe exhaled softly and adjusted her scarf.
“…We should probably head back.”
Ash nodded.
“Yeah.”
The festival music drifted faintly through the trees again.
The lights from the main plaza flickered between the branches.
Ash gestured toward the path.
“After you.”
Chloe started walking.
Ash fell into step beside her.
Pikachu and Eevee ran ahead through
the snow, clearly full of energy again.
“…Pika pika!”
“…Vee!”
Ash watched them for a moment.
“They’re acting weird.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow.
“You kissed someone under mistletoe.”
Ash blinked.
“... How's that weird?”
Chloe glanced sideways at him.
“You’re surprisingly calm about it.”
Ash rubbed the back of his neck again.
“…Should I not be?”
Chloe shrugged slightly.
“I don’t know.”
Ash thought about it.
“…It didn’t feel weird.”
Chloe looked ahead at the lights glowing through the trees.
“…No.”
“It didn’t.”
They walked quietly for a few seconds.
Snow crunched softly under their boots.
Then Ash spoke again.
“…Hey Chloe?”
“Yes?”
“…Are you going to pretend that didn’t happen?”
Chloe thought about that for a moment.
“…No.”
Ash smiled.
“…Good.”
Pikachu suddenly skidded back toward them.
“Pika!”
Eevee bounced beside him.
“Vee!”
Ash crouched down.
“What’s up?”
Pikachu pointed toward the plaza ahead.
“Pika pika!”
Through the trees they could now see the full festival again, lights, music, and the crowd moving between the stalls.
Ash stood up.
“Looks like everyone’s still having fun.”
Chloe nodded.
“…Looks like it.”
They stepped out from the quiet path into the glowing festival plaza again.
The energy of the crowd returned instantly.
Ash stretched his arms.
“Alright!”
Pikachu jumped onto his shoulder.
“Pika!”
“Next stop, food.”
Chloe laughed quietly.
“…Of course.”
Ash grinned.
“You’re coming too.”
Chloe rolled her eyes.
“…I figured.”
But she followed him anyway.
Pikachu and Eevee ran ahead toward the food stalls, laughing as they went.
Ash walked beside her through the lights and snow.
And even though nothing else had been said about the mistletoe Chloe couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Not in an awkward way.
Just… quietly.
Like a small moment she wasn’t ready to let go of yet.
Beside her, Ash looked completely normal again, laughing, talking, pointing at things in the festival like he always did.
But once. Just once. He glanced sideways at her.
And smiled.
Chloe felt the warmth return to her cheeks.
“…Strange.”
Ash blinked.
“What?”
Chloe shook her head slightly.
“…Nothing.”
But as the snow continued falling around the festival lights.
She knew that moment under the mistletoe was going to stay with her for a while.
And judging by the way Pikachu and Eevee kept whispering to each other.
They definitely weren’t going to forget it anytime soon.
