Summary:

Ash and Bea kiss under the mistletoe

Work Text:

The dojo was quiet.

Not empty, never empty, but quiet in the way serious training spaces always were.

The sound of footsteps echoed softly across the wooden floor as Ash adjusted his stance on the training mat.

Snow drifted gently outside the open windows, the cold air slipping inside just enough to keep the room crisp.

Across from him

Bea stood perfectly still.

Her posture was flawless, arms relaxed at her sides, eyes focused.

Lucario stood beside her.

Pikachu balanced on Ash’s shoulder.

Neither Pokémon moved.

Ash grinned.

“Ready?”

Bea nodded once.

“Yes.”

Ash rubbed his hands together.

“Alright then!”

He pointed forward.

“Pikachu, Quick Attack!”

Pikachu launched forward instantly.

“Pika!”

Lucario moved at the exact same moment.

No command.

Just instinct.

The two Pokémon collided mid-floor with a crack of energy and momentum.

Ash laughed.

“You’ve gotten even faster!”

Bea didn’t react.

“Lucario.”

Lucario slid backward into stance again, aura flickering faintly around its body.

Pikachu bounced back to Ash’s side.

“Pika!”

Ash crouched slightly.

“Again!”

Bea lifted one hand.

“Focus.”

Lucario’s stance sharpened instantly.

Ash noticed the shift.

“Whoa.”

The next clash was faster.

Much faster.

Pikachu darted forward with another Quick Attack, but Lucario pivoted smoothly, redirecting the momentum with a clean strike of its palm.

Pikachu skidded across the mat.

“Pika!”

Ash’s eyes lit up.

“That was awesome!”

Bea stepped forward slightly.

“Lucario’s aura reading has improved.”

Ash nodded eagerly.

“I can see that!”

He pointed again.

“Pikachu, Iron Tail!”

Pikachu spun, tail glowing silver as he lunged back into the fight.

Lucario countered with a precise block.

The two Pokémon locked briefly before pushing apart again.

Snowflakes drifted through the open window behind them.

For several minutes the battle continued.

Fast. Precise. Focused.

Until finally Ash raised a hand.

“Okay! Let’s pause!”

Pikachu hopped back to Ash’s shoulder, breathing lightly but still smiling.

“Pika!”

Lucario returned to Bea’s side.

Both Pokémon bowed their heads slightly toward each other in mutual respect.

Ash wiped sweat from his forehead.

“Man.”

He laughed.

“That was intense.”

Bea nodded calmly.

“You have improved.”

Ash grinned.

“Thanks!”

He stretched his arms.

“You’ve gotten stronger too.”

Bea crossed her arms slightly.

“Training never stops.”

Ash chuckled.

“I figured.”

Lucario glanced toward the open window.

Outside. Lights had begun appearing across the small village beyond the dojo.

Decorations hung between the buildings.

Ash tilted his head.

“…Hey.”

Bea followed his gaze.

“The winter festival.”

Ash blinked.

“Oh right! You mentioned that earlier.”

Bea nodded.

“The villagers celebrate every year.”

Ash rubbed the back of his neck.

“…Is it open to visitors?”

“Yes.”

Ash grinned.

“Well then we should check it out!”

Pikachu cheered.

“Pika!”

Bea considered that for a moment.

Then nodded.

“…Very well.”

Ash laughed.

“Awesome!”

A few minutes later they stepped outside.

Snow crunched under their boots as they walked toward the village.

Lights glowed warmly between the buildings.

Music drifted through the cold night air.

Ash looked around in awe.

“Whoa…”

Bea walked beside him quietly.

“…You enjoy festivals.”

Ash grinned.

“Yeah!”

Pikachu nodded enthusiastically.

“Pika pika!”

They moved through the decorated streets together.

Stalls sold warm drinks and food.

Children played games in the snow.

The atmosphere was lively but peaceful.

Ash slowed as they passed beneath a wooden archway at the edge of the square.

“…Hey.”

Bea stopped.

“What is it?”

Ash pointed upward.

Hanging from the center of the archway. Was a sprig of mistletoe tied with red ribbon.

Bea looked up.

“…I see.”

Pikachu leaned forward.

“…Pika.”

Lucario observed quietly.

Ash rubbed the back of his neck.

“…Uh.”

Bea looked back down at him.

“You understand the tradition.”

Ash blinked.

“…You know about it?”

“Yes.”

Ash laughed nervously.

“…Right.”

They were standing directly underneath it.

Neither of them moved.

Ash glanced up again.

Then back at Bea.

“…This might get awkward.”

Bea remained perfectly calm.

“…Perhaps.”

And for the first time that evening Ash wasn’t entirely sure what would happen next.

Snow continued falling softly through the lantern light.

The festival square buzzed with distant laughter and music, but under the wooden archway things had gone strangely still.

Ash looked up at the mistletoe again.

Then back at Bea.

“…Right.”

Bea stood exactly where she had stopped.

Perfect posture.

Perfect stillness.

Ash rubbed the back of his neck.

“So… that’s a thing.”

Bea nodded once.

“Yes.”

Pikachu leaned forward on Ash’s shoulder.

“…Pika.”

Lucario remained calm beside Bea, observing quietly.

Ash shifted his weight slightly.

“We could just step forward.”

Bea didn’t move.

Ash noticed.

“…Or not.”

Bea spoke evenly.

“The tradition states that two people standing beneath mistletoe should kiss.”

Ash laughed awkwardly.

“Yeah, but people don’t always actually-”

Bea met his eyes.

“You hesitate.”

Ash blinked.

“…What?”

“You hesitate.”

Ash scratched his cheek.

“I’m not hesitating.”

“You are.”

Ash gestured vaguely at the archway above them.

“I’m just thinking!”

Bea crossed her arms slightly.

“Thinking delays action.”

Ash stared at her.

“…You’re treating this like training.”

Bea didn’t deny it.

“Discipline applies to all situations.”

Ash laughed.

“You’re unbelievable.”

Bea tilted her head slightly.

“Is that meant as criticism?”

Ash shook his head with a grin.

“Not really.”

Pikachu whispered to Lucario.

“…Pika.”

Lucario gave a small amused huff.

Ash looked up at the mistletoe again.

“…So you’re seriously just standing here.”

“Yes.”

“And waiting?”

“Yes.”

Ash rubbed the back of his neck again.

“…You’re not going to move.”

“No.”

Ash chuckled.

“Wow.”

Bea watched him carefully.

“You suggested we leave.”

“Yeah.”

“Yet you remain.”

Ash blinked.

“…Okay that’s fair.”

The snow settled lightly on Bea’s shoulders as she looked up at the mistletoe again.

Then back at Ash.

“You are unsure.”

Ash laughed.

“Most people would be unsure!”

Bea considered that.

“…Perhaps.”

Ash folded his arms.

“You’re not?”

Bea answered without hesitation.

“No.”

Ash stared at her.

“…Seriously?”

“Yes.”

Ash shook his head, smiling.

“You’re intense.”

“Focus is important.”

Ash pointed upward.

“Even for mistletoe?”

“Yes.”

Pikachu giggled.

“Pika Pika.”

Ash sighed dramatically.

“This might be the strangest training exercise I’ve ever been part of.”

Bea’s expression softened just slightly.

“It is not training.”

Ash raised an eyebrow.

“…You literally called it discipline.”

Bea looked back up at the mistletoe.

“The rule exists.”

Ash followed her gaze again.

“…Yeah.”

Bea met his eyes again.

“So the question becomes simple.”

Ash tilted his head.

“…Which is?”

Bea stepped one pace closer.

Not aggressively. Not hurriedly. Just deliberate.

“Will you follow through.”

Pikachu’s ears shot straight up.

“PIKA.”

Ash blinked.

“…You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

Ash laughed nervously.

“You really are treating this like a challenge.”

Bea shook her head.

“No.”

Ash raised an eyebrow.

“…Then what is it?”

Bea answered calmly.

“A moment of resolve.”

Ash looked at the mistletoe again.

Then back at her.

For the first time since the training match. He realized she wasn’t joking at all.

And suddenly the quiet space between them felt very real.

Pikachu whispered again.

“…Pika.”

Ash sighed softly.

“…Okay.”

Bea waited.

Not impatiently. Just patiently.

As if she knew the moment would arrive when it arrived.

And somehow. That made Ash hesitate even more.

The snow continued falling.

Soft flakes drifted through the lantern light above the archway as the festival carried on around them, the sounds of music and laughter echoing faintly through the square.

But beneath the mistletoe. Everything felt still.

Ash exhaled slowly.

Bea hadn’t moved.

Her posture remained steady, calm,
completely composed.

Lucario stood beside her like a silent observer.

Pikachu leaned forward slightly on Ash’s shoulder.

“…Pika.”

Ash rubbed the back of his neck again.

“…You’re really serious about this.”

Bea met his eyes.

“Yes.”

Ash laughed softly.

“You’re treating mistletoe like a sparring match.”

Bea shook her head.

“It is not a match.”

Ash raised an eyebrow.

“Then what is it?”

Bea considered the question for a moment.

“A test of conviction.”

Ash blinked.

“…Wow.”

Pikachu whispered to Lucario.

“…Pika.”

Lucario gave a small amused rumble.

Ash glanced up at the mistletoe again.

“…You’re not even a little nervous, are you?”

“No.”

Ash shook his head with a small smile.

“You’re incredible.”

Bea tilted her head slightly.

“You hesitate because you overthink.”

Ash sighed.

“…That might be true.”

Snowflakes landed on his jacket.

The quiet stretched between them again.

Bea simply waited.

No pressure. No teasing. Just patience.

Ash finally looked back at her.

“…You’re not going to step away.”

“No.”

“And you’re not going to pretend the
rule doesn’t exist.”

“No.”

Ash chuckled.

“…You’re impossible.”

Bea’s expression softened ever so slightly.

“You have said that before.”

Ash smiled.

“Yeah.”

Pikachu nudged his cheek.

“Pika.”

Ash nodded.

“I know.”

He took a step forward.

The distance between them disappeared.

Bea didn’t move.

Didn’t react.

Just watched him calmly.

Ash laughed quietly.

“…You’re really not flinching.”

“No.”

Ash shook his head.

“Alright.”

He glanced up one more time at the mistletoe.

Then back at Bea.

“…Resolve, right?”

Bea nodded.

“Yes.”

Ash leaned forward.

The kiss was brief.

Gentle.

More like a promise than a victory.

When Ash stepped back, the snow continued falling just as quietly as before.

Pikachu blinked.

“…Pika.”

Lucario gave a small approving nod.

Bea looked at Ash calmly.

“…You chose action.”

Ash rubbed the back of his neck.

“…I guess I did.”

Bea studied him for a moment.

“…You did not hesitate that time.”

Ash laughed.

“Yeah.”

Pikachu jumped onto his shoulder again.

“Pika pika.”

Ash looked down at him.

“I know, I know.”

Bea’s posture relaxed slightly now.

Not much.

But enough that Ash noticed.

“…Was that acceptable?” he asked.

Bea nodded once.

“Yes.”

Ash grinned.

“Well that’s good.”

For a moment they both stood quietly beneath the mistletoe.

The festival lights flickered across the falling snow.

And somehow, the moment felt calmer than Ash expected.

Bea finally spoke again.

“…The festival continues.”

Ash blinked.

“…Right.”

Pikachu cheered.

“Pika!”

Lucario turned toward the square.

Ash laughed softly.

“…Guess we should join it.”

Bea nodded.

“Yes.”

And together, they stepped out from beneath the mistletoe.

They stepped out from beneath the archway.

The mistletoe swayed lightly behind them as the sounds of the winter festival returned, music, laughter, the clatter of dishes from nearby stalls.

For a moment neither Ash nor Bea spoke.

Snow crunched softly beneath their boots as they walked deeper into the square.

Pikachu rode comfortably on Ash’s shoulder again, while Lucario paced calmly beside Bea.

The lights of the festival reflected in the snow-covered street.

Ash finally broke the silence.

“…So.”

Bea glanced toward him.

“Yes?”

Ash rubbed the back of his neck.

“That might be the most serious mistletoe moment I’ve ever had.”

Bea considered that.

“…Most people treat it lightly.”

“Yeah.”

Ash laughed softly.

“Usually it’s teasing or something.”

Bea nodded.

“I prefer sincerity.”

Ash smiled.

“…I noticed.”

They passed a stall selling warm drinks.

The scent of cocoa drifted through the cold air.

Ash stopped.

“Hey.”

Bea paused beside him.

Ash pointed to the stall.

“You want something?”

Bea looked at the display.

“…Tea would be acceptable.”

Ash grinned.

“Tea it is.”

A few minutes later they walked again through the festival crowd.

Ash held a warm cup while Bea carried a small steaming mug.

Pikachu sniffed the air.

“Pika…”

Ash laughed.

“You already had snacks.”

Lucario walked quietly beside Bea, watching the crowd calmly.

Ash glanced sideways at her.

“…You know something?”

“What?”

“You’re not what people expect.”

Bea tilted her head slightly.

“…Explain.”

Ash shrugged.

“Everyone says you’re intense.”

“That is accurate.”

Ash nodded.

“Yeah, but they also say you’re distant.”

Bea walked a few steps before answering.

“…Distance can help focus.”

Ash nodded thoughtfully.

“Maybe.”

They reached the edge of the square where the noise of the festival softened again.

Snow fell gently between the glowing lanterns.

Ash looked up briefly.

“…You know.”

“What?”

“That wasn’t really a test of conviction.”

Bea stopped walking.

“…No?”

Ash shook his head.

“It was just a moment.”

Bea studied him quietly.

“…Moments can reveal conviction.”

Ash laughed softly.

“Guess you’ve got a point.”

Pikachu leaned toward Lucario.

“…Pika.”

Lucario gave a small amused rumble.

Ash stretched his arms slightly.

“Well.”

Bea looked toward him.

“Yes?”

“I’m glad I came tonight.”

Bea nodded once.

“…So am I.”

Ash blinked.

“…You are?”

“Yes.”

Ash smiled.

“…Good.”

The festival music echoed again from the square behind them.

Pikachu hopped down from Ash’s shoulder and ran ahead a few steps.

“Pika!”

Lucario followed calmly.

Ash and Bea watched the two Pokémon for a moment.

Ash laughed quietly.

“They’re getting along.”

“Yes.”

Ash looked back at Bea.

“…We should battle again tomorrow.”

Bea nodded without hesitation.

“I agree.”

Ash grinned.

“And this time I’m winning.”

Bea’s expression didn’t change. But there was the faintest spark of challenge in her eyes.

“…We shall see.”

Snow continued falling around them.

Behind them, the mistletoe still hung beneath the archway.

But neither of them looked back at it.

Because the moment had already passed.

And somehow, that made it feel stronger.
