Doll grasped in hand, she takes the rickety stairs two at a time, a girl on a mission. She's going to knock on Gabby's door and beg her mum to let her come out to play, as she does every year. It's that stupid day again where all the adults in the District get all boring and protective, and all the older kids get moody and mean. She knows it's today because Mum spent the morning putting ribbons in her hair, Aaron moaning in the other room about how his trousers are too tight, like he does every year, 'cause Mum can't afford new ones.
