Chapter Text
“Goodbye guys, don’t stay out too late !” Jack screamed as he fled away from the group of kids he was playing with waving at them with his staff as he got farther into the sky.
They had started a snowballs fight a hour or so ago when Jack had fled over their town bringing snow and joy with him and he had to stop and play with them after they spotted him and had begged him -not that he was hard to convince but he liked messing with them - to play adding that, with his power he would win anyways and he hadn’t needed any other argument after that.
He obviously knew that they had said that only to convince him but it had worked so he couldn’t be mad about being manipulated by a bunch of kids into playing with snowballs and he did win so really they weren’t wrong about it either. It was only after his win that he had realized the time and even though he was logically in another time zone he knew he still had work for the day to finish before being able to head back home so he said goodbye and promised to come back soon before going to his next destination in need of snow.
After the battle with pitch and his new found role more kids had started believing in him, it had obviously started with the burgess kids and after a while even started to spread to the rest of the world especially to places where he tended to go a lot for his duties of winter spirit even before becoming a guardian.
He had been surprised and overjoyed to say the least when he discovered the first kid able to see him outside of burgess and had spread the news everywhere as quickly as he could, his new friend where all happy for him especially tooth and north who he came to visit every time it happened after that. Now he had 30 believers and he still hardly could believe it was real most day.
They were spread all around the globe and with his guardian power he could understand all of them without a problem which definitely helped when it came to actually interacting with them and not just play with them without being seen. All in all his new responsibilities hadn’t been so bad when it included spending more time with kids playing in the snow which everybody knew was his favorite activities.
He was still getting accustomed to his new schedule though and even though he called himself a free spirit he would lie if he said he wasn’t considerably more occupied now then throughout his past 300 years as a spirit and he was glad when the last place who needed winter for that day was done he definitely needed a nap in a cozy tree now.
Since he became a guardian 6 month ago Jack had started to hang around the workshop with the authorization of North - it actually depended more on Phil then North himself but both were now used to his visits and stopped reacting about it - and he had grown to appreciate the sound and warmth of the place despite his evident disliking of the later subject, he liked floating around the room just watching the yeti or even north himself work, he stayed mostly silent during those moments which north had admitted after a couple of visits had surprised him at first not expecting this kind of silence from the spirit.
Despite his new found liking in the place he still spent most of his time in between his winter spirit and guardian duties at burgess, wether it was to see his kids - as he liked to call them - or just stay in his hometown, he always found a reason to stick around. Since getting his memory back he felt even more connected to the place, understanding at last why he felt drawn to it only amplified the feeling.
After spending 3 hundred years in isolation so many person being able to see him sometime got too much and at time like this he liked to flee back to his lake and just take in the silence around him hoping to find the same peace he always felt in this place. Now was no different and he was already flying thinking about what tree he could climb for a rest upon arriving.
It was a too early for him to bring anything more then a cold breeze as he settle into the woods surrounding burgess, he flew between the three spinning and letting himself be taken away by the wind trusting it to always take him back where he wanted to be. After a while they both settled down and jack found himself a nice tree around his lake and sat there enjoying the evening.
He hadn’t realized he was asleep until he got woken up by a scream breaking the comforting sound of the forest around him. Startled by the sound he fell of the branch he was laying on five second ago, he tried to use his staff to stop his fall but he only swung the staff helplessly missing the branch by a centimeter as he continued to fall the wind thankfully decided to help break his fall so he could stand on the ground below him taking pity on his obviously helpless friend. The night had now fully settled and if he had to make a estimation he would say it was around 2 am if the moon almost blinding him with his light was any indication.
As he settle on the ground now fully awake another scream reverberate around him now even closer only this time he understand it but before he can register the meaning of it a black cat suddenly jump on him making him lose his balance for the second time in the past 5 minutes. The wind as helpful as always push him from the back so he can stay upright as he wrap his arms around the creature by instinct stopping it from falling or worse planting his claw into his hoodie.
“What are you doing here little guy ?” the spirit questioned as he start petting the creature who looked at him curiously and started to make some sort of bubbling sound like he want to respond making Jack even more confused. It doesn’t take long after he stopped trying to respond before the cat start purring obviously enjoying the petting that jack had started without really realizing or wanting too, it had just seemed obvious.
He was still very confuse - and still a little sleepy - and was questioning why this cat had suddenly jumped on him, the intrusion of his space had made him forget about the reason why he was standing awake in the middle of the night in those wood in the first place.
He didn’t forget for long since right at this instant a brown haired man entered his view and was looking right at him and then at his arm where the cat was still settled down before coming all but running toward him looking frantically at him and the cat repeatedly like he didn’t quite understand the situation which honestly made two of them. The moon useful for once was illuminating between the three making it easy for him to see despite the late hour.
Unfortunately it also made it really easy for him to realize that the man currently walking quickly toward him was to say the least beautiful, the light reflected on his skin in a way that made his breath stop for a second showing all the freckles covering his face, the green of his eyes was unmistakable between the brown of his hair and his cream skin even through the white glow covering them.
Jack had really tried to follow the situation and to react but the cheer beauty of the man in front of him had stopped his already slow brain and he barely had the time to understand that the man had definitely seen him before he was met face to face with him and he looked even more confused by the second.
He didn’t know what was the most surprising at the moment, the utmost beauty of the man in front of him, the fact that he seemed able to see him or his weird outfit and general apparence of somebody who just woke up. Thankfully he didn’t have to pick or even think about it too long because once the man was close enough the cat jumped out of his arms toward what jack supposed was his guardian making him snap out of his thoughts.
He watched as the man all but scolded the cat in his arm, a amused smile quickly found his way on his lips as he settled against his staff feeling already more at ease without the animal in his arms, still he could think of one thing : The man had seen him, he had looked directly at him. Before he could stop himself he blurted out the question burning his lips.

“Aand that was the last one" declared a blonde girls as she sat down a box with cable poking on the side of it. She got back up and moved toward him a small smile and exhaustion clear on her face.
“thanks Astrid, i don’t know what i would've done without you” responded the tall brown haired man with a small smile in return looking if possible even more tired then her.
“hm you would’ve probably cry and then take three day to move half of these boxes” she said teasingly nudging him with her shoulders as she got next to him putting her hands on her hips looking satisfied with her job.
“ah ah real nice” he said sarcastically nudging her in return before moving toward the kitchen to grab his glass of water he had left there earlier. “want something ?” he asked after taking a sip of water.
But before she could respond toothless jumped on the counter next to him startling him and making him lose his grip around his glass next thing he knew the glass was shattered on the floor below him. With a sigh he got down to pick up the shard “you okay ?” he heard his friend almost scream in between the room he responded with a quick yes before going back to the task of cleaning without cutting himself which he quickly realized was easier said then done.
Right at this moment he accidentally cut his finger on a small shard, with a curse he got up took his cat off the counter and walked toward the bathroom where he knew he had put the box containing the band aid earlier that day.
On the way he found Astrid who looked at his finger for a second before sighing and taking the cat in his arms putting him down before going toward the kitchen, he muttered another thanks and entered the bathroom.
After patching up his finger he went back to the kitchen where Astrid was putting away his broom, toothless was cleaning his paw seemingly unbothered by his mess once again on the counter despite the many time hiccup had tried to take him off the cat seemed to always be there anyways and after a while hiccup had just given up the idea.
“thanks for cleaning up, toothless surprised me and i guess gravity won this time” he said jokingly before taking place next to Astrid against the counter.
“no problem, do you need any more help with the moving ? i promised Ruffnut that i would bring her a batch of the brownie i made yesterday and i was thinking of going now before i was too tired to move” Astrid questioned taking out her phone to check the time before putting it back in her pocket to look at hiccup.
“nah i think I'm gonna be fine thanks, I'm just going to search for the basic stuff tonight I'll do the rest tomorrow” he answered easily “do you plan on giving everything to ruff or?” he wasn’t gonna lie Astrid brownie were really incredible and even though he would feel bad he would absolutely steal them from his friend if necessary. But before he could resort to the worse option Astrid smiled and pointed to a box sitting on the counter.
“don’t worry i made some for you, i knew you would need them after moving and i had the misfortune to tell her yesterday.” she smiled knowingly before pushing herself off the counter and walking toward the door. “if you’re done exploiting me im gonna go ahead and leave before toothless decide to fight once more with gravity”
Barely five minute later hiccup was alone for the first time in his new apartment, even if he wanted he couldn’t hide his smile at that fact. He had wanted to live on his own for as long as he could remember and despite all the problem he had on the way he was glad to finally have a place he could call his own. Despite his happiness he was so tired he felt like he could sleep on the floor in the middle of the room right now, so he got into action hoping to be able to at least settle his mattress and eat something before he couldn’t move.
He did all that was possible with his level of exhaustion and all but crashed on his mattress early in the night, despite his obvious exhausted state, sleep was hard to find and he couldn’t have had more then 3 hours of sleep before he got woken by toothless jumping on his chest suddenly before running across the room and scratching at the window door on the other side of the room.
Still half-asleep Hiccup didn’t think much before opening the window to look at what toothless wanted, but on the other side was just the forest weirdly visible through the light of the full moon. He turned around to question his cat when this one decide to jump on the balcony and down the emergency stair, despite jumping toward his cat almost a second later hiccup missed and felt quickly more awake has panic started to settle. He couldn’t lose his cat ! He didn’t even know the surrounding ! He quickly turned around to grab the closest shoe before going out through his front door and down the hallway his mind still in a frenzy half-panicked half-asleep.
He ran down the staircase cursing his prosthetic when he almost fell for the second time and thanked the gods that he was only on the second floor. As soon as he was outside he ran to his side of the building and there he saw toothless running down toward the woods seemingly determined.
Even more confused with his cat sudden need to go to the woods in the middle of the night he still followed him screaming his name hoping he wouldn’t wake anyone up. Despite his running hiccup had a hard time catching up with his pet even more when this one was so determined. He was thankful for the light the moon gave tonight when he entered the wood and realized he had left his phone in his apartment and had to rely on it as is only source of light.
After maybe 10 minute of running around in the woods trying to catch up with his cat hiccup found him, what he wasn’t expecting was to see him in the arm of a man. But what he was expecting even less was for the man to look like he got out of a literal fairytale, his skin glowed under the moonlight in a way that seem out of this world and his smile as he helped the cat settle in his arm could only be described as breathtaking.
Even his weird combination of clothes and the weird branch he held in his hand only helped make him seem even more unreal and that was without the unreal whiteness of his skin and hair and his impossibly blue eyes that looked at the cat like it was simultaneously cute and confusing -which he usually was-.
Feeling like his heart had simultaneously stopped beating and started beating at a impossible rate hiccup was frozen in place. The only thing he could do was stare for a minute before his earlier panic came to the surface again and he remembered why he was in the wood in the middle of the night in the first place. The cheer panic and confusion took the place of the awe he felt when he looked at the man and he started walking again determined to get his cat back and ask some question to the pet.
Still as he came closer he couldn’t deny the cheer beauty of the man - fae ? god ? he hoped it wasn’t the later - in front of him. Thankfully he didn’t have to forcefully take his cat back because this one jumped on him as soon as was able to do so. Still mad at him he took a quick look at the man in front of him before questioning his cat about his demeanor of the night exasperation and relief slipping in his voice.
He looked back for a second time the man who was now leaning on his staff an amused smile on his face - the vision of it absolutely didn’t make hiccup heart skip a beat- this time his gaze lingered longer and he was going to apologies to him when the white haired-man mumbled a question hiccup barely heard.
- - - - - - - -
“You can see me ?” all but mumbled Jack still chocked and curious at the situation currently developing.
“obviously i can.” hiccup responded obviously confused by the question, if he wasn’t so tired right now he might have given it more thought but the only that went through his mind was how tired he was and his general exasperation at toothless action.
He turned his head toward the cat in his arm after responding to jack question sighing before questioning the cat once again “toothless please tell me you didn’t left in the middle of the night and made me run through the wood only to jump on someone again” he sounded so exasperated by the cat manner that jack couldn’t help his chuckle at the reprimand making the other attention come back to him hiccup looked at him confused for a second before blushing and smiling back at him.
Realization settled in Jack mind as they looked at each other neither saying anything for a moment seemingly both lost in thought. The sudden need to touch the man to make sure he believed him was almost unbearable but he fought it knowing it would seem weird if it worked and he didn’t really want to pass through anybody tonight if it didn’t. Instead he started jumping in place failing at hiding his growing excitement, he had a adult believer ! He couldn’t believe it ! A real adult person was seeing him !
Hiccup watched him curiously as he continued jumping around the wind picking up around him and his smile grew in amusement at the demeanor and soon a chuckle came out of him.
Without realizing snow had started to appear around Jack as he jumped around excitedly, and it was hiccup gasp that made him realize that first there was a soft layer of snow forming around them and small snowflakes rolling as the wind shared jack excitement, and that second he was now definitely floating. The clear amazement and incredulity in hiccup eyes made him almost blush and he couldn’t decide if he wanted to stop the snow or make even more so see the awe in the other eyes.
He didn’t have time to make a choice as Toothless jumped from Hiccup arm to go play with the falling snowflakes clearly not caring about the other two current chock making them both jump out of thought.
“what are you? “ finally asked hiccup the awe and curiosity clear in his voice.
“I'm a winter spirit” responded simply Jack still smiling despite his apprehension of hiccup possible reaction “I'm jack frost” he added after a moment of silence his smiled faltering hoping the other wouldn't react badly, his first adult believer he didn't want him to freak out.
Hiccup shot his hand nuzzling his already messy hair, and started mumbling before starting to walk making a circle into the small cover of snow at his feet. Jack was still looking at him worried when suddenly Hiccup prosthetic slipped on the snow he was walking on without paying attention and he would've fallen if it wasn't for jack quick reflex as he put his arm on his back and side to catch him before pushing him up again.
The contact chocked the both of them, “you’re real” gasped hiccup once he was standing again.
“well yeah” jack shrugged secretly glad the man hadn’t looked scared or disgusted only chocked. he couldn’t help but look at the other and then at his hands repeatedly, even through the brief contact jack still had felt the warmth of his body and the feeling of touching somebody still felt odd to him.
“sorry that’s so rude, i mean it’s just that- well- I'm sorry” hiccup really didn’t mean to say that or even to be mean but his sleep deprived mind couldn’t produce any good excuse, fortunately for him jack didn’t seem to mind since he tried to hid a amused mile as he settled down on the ground the wind rumbling his hair softly.
“i didn’t even tell you my name, i mean I'm fairly sure it would be fine if i told you anyways right ? it isn’t like with the fairy right ?” hiccup continued rambling worriedly and jack chuckled again failing to hid it this time before responding clearly amused “no i won’t do anything like that, the only thing i can do with your name is call you with it and i mean that in the normal way” he clarified
“then my name is hiccup, nice to meet you jack” he offered his hands seemingly reassured from the white haired man words. jack took it with apprehension and they shook quite awkwardly. “nice to meet you too hiccup” Jack really tried to not smile at his name he did he swear but what kind of parent named their kids hiccup ? thankfully the other didn’t seem too bothered or surprised by the reaction
“yeah i know it’s a weird name but what can i say at least my parent were original” he shrugged a small smile still on his lips, if jack thought it was cute that was just because of the excitement of having a new believer.
“i won’t judge too much don’t worry after all frost isn’t really normal either” hiccup chuckle in response got cut by a sudden yawn making them both realize how late it was. They hadn’t realize too caught up in meeting but they must have been standing there for at least 40 minutes if the moon position was any indication.
“if you’re real will i see you again ?”
“sure ! i would love seeing you again, and hopefully this time i won’t get jumped on by” “toothless” supplied hiccup the name earned a raised eyebrow but jack continued nonetheless “by toothless, come back tomorrow ?” he asked trying to sound less unsure then he was.
“that fine by me” toothless had came back at the mention of his name and was now rubbing jack leg “and by toothless too it seemed, and i swear he won’t jump on you again.” hiccup added picking up the cat and walking backward
“it’s fine he a sweet cat anyways, I'm just not used to this kind of attention” jack shrugged his smile faltering slightly into an easy smile as hiccup got further away waving at him.
“see you tomorrow jack” he declared one last time before turning around and walking back to his apartment where he would hopefully be able to finish his night.
“see you” responded Jack before taking up to the sky direction north workshop, he had to tell him about his new believer !
