šu zamāram labram- It’s an old song

šu zamāram labram ištu ultu ulla- It’s an old song from long ago

šu zamāram marṣam- It’s a sad song

u iqatti, akanna- And it comes to an end, here

 

ilī šušruḫū- The gods are glorified.

 

ana tūrti amatim, lā tuba’āšu - For the answer, do not ask me for it

Gilgameš adanniš iqrib, adanniš- Gilgamesh came so close, so close

zamāram ultu ulla iššaṭer- The song was written long ago.

 

Enkidu u Gilgamesh- Enkidu and Gilgamesh.

 

šu nissatam marṣam- It’s an sad lamentation,

ištu ṭup šīmātim labram- From an old tablet of destiny.

 

šu zamar šuṣruḫim- It’s a song of mourning,

šu zamāram marṣam- It’s a sad song.

 

u tūra nuštanallal, inadanna- But again we will sing it repeatedly, regardless.

 

edûm ša gamārim- The knowing of the ending

u atlûl ša alālim- And the singing of the song

ki maṣīma igammar itti ḫūd libbim- As though it ends with joy of the heart,

Annîtum almad ištu ibrim ṭābim- This I learned from an old friend.
