Chapter Text
“Hey, Wifies. Could I ask you a question?”
He couldn’t see the other’s face because he was bent down but he noticed the hesitance in his voice and the slight twitching of his wings. Parrot was rarely afraid to ask him things. The two of them were long enough friends to not be awkward around each other in situations like this, so to see the bright avian acting so odd made Wifies’ eyebrows furrow.
“I know you already answered this before but, I just… I wanted to know if your views have changed from when we were kids.”
Parrot turned around. It wasn’t enough to fully face the other hybrid but it was enough for Wifies to see how the darkening yellow of the sun’s rays hit the side of Parrot’s face. The expression he had reminded him of the ones he often adorned whenever his brothers and he would apologize to one another when their fights got to a point… to have such a face be directed at him, Wifies began to think if Parrot was going to bring up a fault that he didn’t realize he’d committed towards the avian or any of their other friends.
Still, Wifies couldn’t mindlessly assume things when it could be immediately cleared up.
“What is it?”
“Wifies… do you still not believe in upper beings or entities?”
Ah. so it was that kind of question.
The dog hybrid knew that his beliefs often clashed with his friends’ beliefs. Although they weren’t pushy about their ideas about the different beings that governed over the different servers they lived in, like the notorious WATCHERS for instance, they still sometimes found themselves questioning Wifies about his opinions in “religion” because of his lack of clear belief in such things. Oftentimes, he’d answer vaguely, saying that it was due to some past experiences that resulted in him choosing to keep a safe distance in subjecting himself to religious beliefs. Rarely though does he share his actual thoughts on why he avoided believing in a sole being or a nebula of beings… just his luck though, Parrot happened to be one of the players that he was most comfortable with when talking about these kinds of topics.
Parrot felt his feet shuffle subconsciously, the wings on his head slowly closing the more that he stared at Wifies’ blank face. He was about to take his words back, change the topic to one of Jumper’s adventure plans when he saw a small smile replace the straight line on the other’s lips. Wifies laughed. It was lighthearted, soft and warm enough to allow him to loosen the strain in his shoulders from bending so rigidly.
“Why’re you laughing? You almost scared me with how quiet you were for a second there, bro!”
“Sorry, sorry. It’s just,” Letting out a few short breaths, Wifies moved to stand closer to Parrot, the reflection of the setting sun clear in the deep ocean’s reflection. “I just didn't think you would ask me something like that again ever since I lashed out when we were kids.”
The avian rolled his eyes. A low huff left his mouth as he lowered himself on the dock to properly sit down, beside him Wifies sat down after seeing the area being patted.
“Oh, don’t remind me of that. I ended up crying to Wemmbu of all people for comfort because of it.”
“Pfft… I remember that. You even got the other two involved to apologize to me.”
“Yeah, yeah— funny, I know.”
A few more teasing words of the past were exchanged between the two as the sun continued to set. Despite Parrot’s initial worries of their warm company turning sour because of his question, his companion never ceased to surprise him with his reactions. Still though…
“Okay, alright. Enough, bro.” Holding his stomach, the avian let out a shuddering breath, lungs aching from the amount of laughter that was forced out of it. Glancing back at Wifies who held a similar posture, leaning back on one hand, Parrot felt himself smile, more comfortable in mentioning their unresolved topic earlier.
“You still haven't answered my question, y’know.”
Scoffing, the brunet moved to lean forward towards the water, his feet dangling off the wooden dock they rested on. It was a pretty dock, one that Horace— one of their server’s best builders— built with pride.
Parrot watched as Wifies stared at the calm movement of the deep waters. A small smile still rested on his lips as they moved to speak.
“My answer’s still the same from back then, Parrot.”
“... Still?”
“Hm. Still.”
Although it wasn’t the answer that he was looking for, he was happy at least to have gotten confirmation.
Wifies was a peculiar player. He was a genius, one of the best ones that Parrot had ever encountered and became acquainted with. Still, like every other genius in the world, he held a weakness close to his heart. Wifies refused to be devoted to any powerful being of their universe. Whether it be one of the popular beings or the lesser and less known myths, he wouldn’t budge in his views. Not because he was arrogant, no. He respected the different kinds of beings that other players followed, and treated with fairness those who were like him that abstained from following a being… the reason why Wifies chose to only maintain a curious eye towards the beings of their universe was—
“There you guys are! We’ve been looking all over the server for you two.”
Looking back at the foot of the dock, a tuft of pure white hair stood with his arms tightly crossed over his chest. Parrot felt his eye twitch at the sight of the angel’s wings puffing up.
“Hey there Saps. Wanna stargaze with us?”
The sun had fully set, leaving a path for the light of the night to shine over the players of the server. It was a sight to behold, to see such bright balls of light fill the night sky. It was an even more breathtaking sight to see the picture that it created when it reflected on the still water of the ocean. Wifies watched with nothing but a buzzing warmth in his chest as the avian and the angel bantered, the latter having basically turned the color of a tomato with how frustrated he was with the former’s ragebaiting. Laughter bubbled in the brunet’s chest, eyes straying to the reflection on the water.
This was how it was supposed to be, this was how everything was meant to be. Wifies was content with the life that he had with his friends in the server that they stayed in, it was enough for him.
Focusing on the moon’s reflection on the water, the conversation he had with Parrot earlier slowly began to turn into a fuzz. There was an odd lightheaded feeling that overcame him, turning his eyelids heavy the more that he stared at the water. He tried to blink but the more he tried to fight the wave of sleepiness that was consuming him, the more that it moved to swallow him… and then, he saw a flash of gold in the depths of the ocean before he felt its waters embracing him.
