Work Text:
“Seth! Seth! Oh Angel, say it ain’t so!” A certain young cowboy wailed as he kicked the door wide open, rushing into the violet room with muddy boots. Almost instantly, he slipped on one of the many notes Seth had scattered across their room, and after a moment of wobbling as he tried to catch his balance, he failed, and fell face first into the floor.
“H-hey! Dang it Yellow, I needed that!” The strategist whined, walking over and looking down at the taller flower on the ground.
“Oh gosh! I’m mighty sorry! Lemme just…”
Yellow reaches one lanky arm back, peels the page off his boot, and hands the wrinkled, filthy sheet of paper to Seth with his usual, goofy grin.
“Here ya go!”
The latter scrunches their nose, or where their nose would be, hesitantly taking the page with a look of nothing short of disgust at the level of filth the older flower had managed to bring in.
“Mm… thanks. A-anyways, what did you need? I’m kind of busy here.”
“O-oh, right!” Suddenly, Yellow was on his knees, his eyes clamped shut, and hands clasped together in nothing short of a begging position, shaking them desperately. “Say it ain’t so Seth! Say it ain’t so!”
…
Seth can see why their brother was so attached to the idiot sitting in front of them. He’s almost as dramatic as Blue himself was.
“You haven’t even told me what you want me to say isn’t true yet, Yellow,” they pointed out, clearly frustrated, folding their arms together and looking up at the cowboy. Yes, they still had to look up at him, even though he was on his knees. Yeah, they weren’t happy about it.
The sooner they answered, the sooner they could get back to work.
“Oh! Right, sorry.”
Yellow stood up, grabbing his hat, dusted himself up, and put his pointer on his finger as if he was lost in thought. Seth knew he wasn’t. They knew Yellow’s one braincell was probably bouncing around like the dvd logo Kris always watched.
“Well… I was puttin’ together ‘nother show fer Asgore when I’d got to thinkin’ ‘what ‘re the spiky fellers on my boots fer anyway’! Well, I ‘pparently said this out loud ‘n Flowey said they were used fer guidin’ horses! I asked him ‘how can they guide ‘em if they’re on ma feet’ and he- he-“
Yellow’s arms are suddenly up in the air, flailing slightly for emphasis.
“He says I *kick ‘em* with ma spur! Oh Seth, it’s awful! I don’ wanna kick an innasant ol’ horse!!! I don’ wanna hurt nobody!!! B-but cowboys do it, so I gotta right?? So-“
He calmed down a little, but not by much, shakily grabbing his hat and holding it over his chest.
“So I wanted t’ check with ya. I trust Flowery ‘course, but ya know so much so I jus’ wanted t’ see if ya agree!”
They couldn’t help but be flattered by the cowboy’s words… o-of course he went to them! They were the smart one! Still it-… felt nice to hear him say that they were smart.
“Hmm… while I don’t have extensive cowboy knowledge, I might have a book somewhere that could tell us!”
Seth then walked over to one of the many bookshelves their room held and began tracing the spines of their collection, murmuring under their breath as they searched.
Yellow joined beside them after a moment, helping them on occasion reach the taller shelves when needed, until they finally found what they were looking for.
“Aha! Here it is. ‘Western fronts: a cowboy’s guide’.”
“Ooo! Sounds right up my alley!”
Seth only hums in response, looking through the index until they found the spur chapter. Why did they need a whole chapter on spurs? It was a pretty simple idea from the looks of it and-
Uh oh.
Their face falls as they look between the page then to Yellow.
…
Yellow’s expression slowly droops after realizing what that face meant. Then after another moment, it completely crumples.
“No… nooo… not the horsies…”
“Yeaaah… I’m sorry, Yellow.”
He could feel his eyes brimming with tears as his bottom lip trembled once more, his form shaking.
Double uh-oh. They weren’t equipped to deal with crying! Especially not when it was on something so minor!
Yellow’s face was now in his hat as he fell back to his knees a ways away from Seth. While he cries a lot and has cried in front of everyone at least once, he almost never lets them see his face… unless that person was Blue, of course.
“Does JUSTICE not exist fer horses either?! Oh, Seth, I’m such a criminell! I-I only wore spurs ‘cause they were cool a-an’ now I gotta kick horses! ‘Cause cowboys do that! B-but I don’t wanna kick a horse! ‘Specially not when it’s supposed to be mine!!!!”
“Uh- I-“
“Yellow, dear, is that you?”
*Oh, thank Angel…*
“Blue?” The cowboy gasped, shaking his head and shrinking further down, all the while keeping his head hidden. “Oh Blue, don’ come anywhere near me! I’on wanna corrupt ya! I don’ even deserve t’ lookatcha after what I’d done…”
“Nonsense,” the dancer replied, and even though Yellow couldn’t hear him, he just knew he was en pointe, pirouetting over to him in the beautiful way he does. And he was right, as his hat was gently pushed down so Blue could see Yellow’s teary eyes.
Yellow gasped once more, and clenched his eyes shut, shaking his head even more desperately and turning away.
“Oh don’ look at me Blue!! I’m a good fer nothin’ criminell! Y-you could get put to JUSTICE fer just bein’ near me a-an’-“
Blue shushed him softly, grabbing his arm and tugging at his bicep to try and get him to turn around. “Dearest, please,” he soothed calmly, “if it is a crime for me to be near someone so dashing, then to prison I shall be sent. For I know the man of JUSTICE shall be kind to us.”
“Oh, really? Who is it?”
“Why, it’s you my dear!”
…
Yellow almost instantly folded at that, turning around, wrapping his arms around the others waist, and nestling his face into the soft fabric of his sky blue leotard with a sniffle.
“Oh my poor daffodil,” Blue cooed, pressing a kiss to his temple, and slowly carding his fingers through amber hair, before sliding it down to rub at his lover’s spine. The dancer then sighed deeply, opening his eyes to peer over at Seth, who had been awkwardly standing in the corner since Blue had arrived.
“Seth, what on earth did you do?”
Their face grew into a mixture of shock and pure offense. “What?! I-I didn’t do anything! I just told him the truth!”
Blue raised an eyebrow skeptically.
“My dear, the last time you told him ‘the truth’, you said I would never date him because humans don’t find mullets attractive now.”
“W-Well it was the truth! Humans *don’t* like mullets!” They defended themself, as it was statistically the truth! They saw a poll on Reddit!
“So you immediately assumed I would never date him over a simple hairstyle?? That’s utterly ridiculous and you knew that, especially since I had *told you* he enamored me so.”
“Well *maybe* I didn’t want you to date someone was dumb as rocks,” they grumbled.
Blue could feel Yellow tense in his arms at that comment. The dancer inhaled deeply, trying to ignore the protective anger building in his chest at his siblings insults towards his darling.
“That wasn’t your decision to *make*,” Blue ground out between gritted teeth, his smile even more forced than it usually was.
As the two continued bickering, Yellow just kept shrinking and shrinking, until finally, he spoke up standing upright, and turning his back to them.
“M-m’sorry y’all, I ain’t mean t’ be such a problem…”
Seth and Blue look between each other, then the tallest of them. Blue shot them a glare.
They knew what that look meant.
‘Apologize.’
Seth sighed.
“No, no. I-… I’m sorry, Yellow,” Seth grumbled, “you’re not as dumb as rocks and… I shouldn’t have said that thing about your hair.”
“*-sniff-* Ya really mean that?” He replied, peaking over at the shortest of the three of them with a… frankly pathetic pout on his face.
“Yes.”
They shot a look back at Blue. ‘Happy?’
Their older brother nodded with a satisfactory hum.
“And I’m sorry as well, Yellow, for our mindless arguing.”
Yellow instantly swiveled around to Blue, walking back to him and pulling him in, kissing his forehead as if he wasn’t the one crying. Seth cringed.
“You don’t got nothing to apologize fer, sugar cube. You know I’ll always fergive ya!”
“Indeed, now would you mind terribly telling me what happened to get you in such a state.”
“Why would I explain somethin’ terribly, Blue? Don’ ya wanna know the truth?” Yellow asked, very confused. Blue giggles.
“It’s an expression, my dear.”
“Oh. Right. ‘Course, I knew that. Anyways I jus’ found out from Seth here that my spurs are used to guide horses, right? B-but to guide a horse, I gotta kick it! And I don’ know what t’ do cause I don’ wanna kick a horse, ‘specially not with somethin’ so dangerous! It’s jus’- oh it’s a real pickle Blue!”
After processing, Blue nodded. “Hmm… that is quite the predicament. But Yellow, dear, why do you think you are a criminal?”
“Cause I got spurs on my boots!”
“So… because you have spurs, you think you’re a criminal?”
“Well… *no*. They just add on to make me more of a cowboy! B-but if I see a horse, I gotta get on it, an’ if I get on it, then I gotta guide it, an’ if I gotta guide it, I gotta kick it with ma spur!!!”
Seth could feel themself getting dizzy at his reasoning.
Blue stepped closer, taking both of Yellow’s calloused hands into his soft palms to prevent him from pulling any hair out.
“My dear, you haven’t actually *kicked* any horses, now have you?”
“… well. No. But-“
Blue cuts him off with a finger in the air.
“Ah-ah. You haven’t. So, logically, you wouldn’t be a criminal, would you?”
“… no, I reckon not.”
“Would you think I’m a criminal if I simply had spurs on my ballet flats?”
Instantly, Yellow perks up, grabbing both of Blue’s shoulders as he exclaimed, “no! N-no a’course not, Bluebell!”
“Then it’s not fair to you to believe you are simply for an accessory, my dearest sunflower,” Blue replies, planting his lips against the amber skin of his forehead, feeling his lover’s cheeks warm in his palms.
After a moment where Yellow’s head rebooted, he nodded slowly. “Alrighty, Blue, if ya say so,” he murmured, reaching up from his kneeling position to kiss the bridge of the dancer’s nose.
Seth grimaces at the sappiness between the two. Ugh. Why did the two of them have to be so gross? Especially in their room! They sighed exasperatingly, moving over, and pushing the two away before their… affections could progress any further. “Yeah yeah, that’s great, now that this is all settled, would you both *please* let me get back to my work?”
“A’course Seth,” Yellow chuckled, standing upright and adjusting his hat, “but uh… would ya mind if I borrowed this book a’ yers?”
“Absolutely no-!” Seth began to exclaim in sheer despair at the idea of their precious book being in anyone’s hands other then their own. They weren’t even sure if Yellow could read! But, nonetheless they were quickly cut off by a sharp glare from Blue. One that said so many words in complete silence. Sweat built, along with the anxious lump in their throat.
‘You have absolutely no purpose nor interest in the book. He clearly loves it. I’ll keep an eye on it, and if it gets damaged, I’ll replace it with a book you’ll actually care for. Give it to him.’
…
“Nooooo…. Problem! No problem Yellow! Y-you can borrow it!”
The tallest of the three, completely obviously to the silent message, brightened instantly at the news.
“Oh my tin stars, really?! Thank ya, Seth!”
He quickly gives the smaller flower a hug, one they instantly tensed in as they were picked up, swirled around, then put down with an apology.
Seth wasn’t good with physical affection.
Yellow often forgot this.
Still… they knew he tried.
And as the two lover’s said their goodbyes and left, Seth could hear the conversation between the two.
“Blue! Blue! Did ya see?! Seth let me borrow their book!” The sheriff whispered loudly and quite excitedly to his lover, their hands interlocked, because of course they were.
“I did my dear, I’m quite proud of them.”
“Me too!”
A pause.
“They… have t’ get their smartness from ya, Blue,” Yellow added on after a moment bashfully.
“Oh, my dearest daffodil, I-“
Yep. Seth didn’t want to listen to the rest of *that* conversation.
They opened their book back up, and continued where they left off before the whole ordeal began. And yet, they couldn’t stop smiling as the older flower’s praises rang in their head.
Blue was proud of them.
Yellow thought they were smart.
With those comments in mind, the strategist was in a better mood for the rest of the day, as was Yellow’s and Blue’s, who remained in each others presence until the sun had risen on the next morning.
Because of course they had.
And while Seth still thought Yellow was a complete idiot… he made Blue happy. That’s all that really mattered to them.
