Was he really that much wretched by the phantoms of his past? Had he truly been robbed of any remote form of feeling without those unhealed wounds to hurt again and again? And why must this happen right then, with Leia – with the person whom he trusted more than himself, the woman for whom he’d build walls of alabaster and silver and take them down with bare hands if that’s what she’d ask him to do – of all people?
Was he, utterly and completely, beyond salvation? Was there no sacred cure or forbidden spell to release him from this cage he had, unknowingly, trapped himself in?
