First Dates

Summary:

The latest episode of X-Men '97 is living in my head and I have feelings. So, I decided to write this one off. No idea when it happens in the continuity except it's some time after X-Men '92 season 2. And Gambit is a very sweet scoundrel. Nothing bad happens, except they're locked up in a cage.

Work Text:

Finally, he got the woman to go out with him and they get captured. Gambit snorted. Typical. Rogue was pacing the cage, her arms wrapped around her waist. The last time they’d been in a cage like this he’d told her he loved her. Why didn’t he ever say it again?
‘Amour, sit down.’ He patted the cot beside him.
‘No, no, Ah’m fine.’ She stared out into the darkness. The guards were there. They just couldn’t seem them. Her fingers dug into her arms.
‘What’s wrong, cherie? Apart from de fact we be in a cage.’ He smiled at her. She didn’t seem to notice. ‘We been in worse spots.’
‘We need to get out.’ She kicked the bars. Which did absolutely nothing because of the inhibitor collar around her neck.
‘Rogue, look at me.’
‘Why?’
‘Because you’re scarin’ me right now. What you be frightened ‘bout? De bars—or me.’
‘Of course Ah’m not scared of you.’ She spun around on her heels and glared at him. ‘We jus’—we need t’ get out of here.’
‘We will but—you’re bleeding.’
‘Ah’m—‘ She stopped and stared at her arm. The cut wasn’t much but with all her frantic movements it couldn’t clot. ‘Dang it.’
‘Hey, it’s okay. Nothin’ bad is gonna happen.’ He took off his gloves and rested his hands either side of him on the mattress. ‘Jus’ sit down. I can sit on de floor if dat make you more comfortable.’
‘Nothin’ bad, huh?’ Her mouth twitched and she almost smiled. Very slowly she moved towards him. He didn’t move. ‘We’re in a cage, our powers stripped away an’ the others don’t know where we are. Because you wanted a romantic date without comms.’
‘Worth it.’
She laughed and shook her head. ‘Really?’
‘I get t’spend the night with a beautiful woman. Provided o’course she doesn’t bleed out on me.’ He took a handkerchief out of his pocket and folded it up. ‘Here, it’s clean, I promise.’
‘Because the most Ah have ta worry about right now is germs.’ She took it from him and pressed it to her arm. Her eyes glanced off his bare hands and skittered away again. ‘Swamp rat—what happens now?’
‘Dat be up t’you petite.’ He shrugged his shoulders, keeping every movement small. ‘I c’n make myself comfortable on the floor over dere or we can sit here ’til you figure out some bad ass plan to break us outta here.’
‘I guess we can sit here.’ She perched on the edge of the cot. He tried not to smile and failed. ‘What you smirkin’ at?’
‘Nothin’ cherie. Jus’ t’inkin’, I was really enjoyin’ our date.’ He examined the bars.
‘Me too.’ Her voice was almost a whisper. ‘Ah mean—the food was good.’
‘Dat all?’
‘Of course.’
‘Here, let me fix dat bandage.’ He tore off the sleeve of his jacket and held it out.
‘Well—alright.’ She held out her arm. He secured the handkerchief in place with the material. Her hand shook as his fingers brushed the skin and she closed her eyes.
‘Rogue? You okay dere?’
‘Ah hate this, feeling helpless.’ Her hand rested on the mattress a few millimeters from his. ‘Ah’m so used to being a proverbial flyin’ brick.’
‘You be de prettiest brick I know.’ He watched her hand move a little closer. Don’t fuck this up, he told himself.
‘Thanks, sugah.’ Almost touching him now.
‘Amour, look at me. It jus’ be ole Remy. He’d nevah hurt you.’ He shifted around so they were face to face. ‘Nevah expect anyt’in you don’ wanna give.’
‘Ah know that.’ Her fingers touched his. He held very still. Her mouth became a surprised ‘O’ as her hand skimmed over his. ‘You feel—nice.’
‘Dat so?’
‘Yeah.’ She tangled her fingers with his and then burst into tears. ‘Stupid, Ah’m bein’ stupid. Ah jus’—‘
‘I know, bebe, you feel good to me too.’ He opened his arms and she put her head on his shoulder. He rubbed her back. ‘Best hand touching ever.’
She snorted and hid her face against his shoulder. He stroked her hair. The sobbing eased. He kept hold of her.
‘Dis okay?’ he asked.
‘Yeah.’ Her voice sounded very small.
‘Bien.’ He lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed the back of it. Her skin was warm despite the cold of the cage. ‘Been waitin’ t’ do dat for a while.’
‘Oh really?’ She tiled her head back to look at him. Her gaze focused on his mouth. ‘What else?’
‘Well—I have a very long list but I left it in my wallet.’ Moving slowly, so slowly he kissed her forehead, then the top of her head. She huffed out a long breath. ‘An’ if I tol’ you, you’d probly slap Gambit’s face.’
‘Probably.’ She relaxed against him. ‘Nevah stopped you before.’
‘Before you always had an exit. I talk trash but don’ evah want you t’feel trapped or forced.’ His mouth skimmed her cheek. ‘C’n I kiss you, amour?’
She moved her head until her lips met his. He chuckled and kissed her back slow, feeling her melt against him. She tasted of fear and sass and a little of the gumbo they ate at dinner. After what seemed forever he pulled away feeling a little dazed. She stared at him with unfocused eyes.
‘Bien, now, perhaps we should get outta here.’ He pecked her on the lips and stood up. She blinked and looked at him. He fumbled around with the collar of his shirt and pulled out a lock pick.’
‘You—scoundrel!’ She covered her mouth and laughed.
‘Guilty. Now, c’mere so I can get dat ugly t’ing offa you, den we split dis party. Sound good?’ He grinned and twirled the lock pick between his fingers.
‘Ah hate you.’
‘No, you don’.’ He winked at her. I love you. He didn’t allow the words to escape, not yet, but they were just there, waiting to escape.

Notes:

No beta reader, just me and my overactive imagination. I just think there has to have been something other than looks and occasional hand kisses before X-Men '97 started.
