Ryland Grace woke with a start, opening his eyes before quickly squeezing them shut against the bright light of the room. His head was tipped back, the top pressing back into a soft surface. Turning his face to the side, away from the direct view of the light, he gave a few cautious blinks until his eyes adjusted. After a moment, he carefully looked up, rolling his head into an upright position to look around the room.
It featured two rows of reclined leather chairs, the back row elevated slightly above the front. The right arm of each chair featured a few buttons on a small keypad. It’s been nearly 27 years since Eva Stratt forced Ryland Grace to board the Hail Mary and sent him off to his death for the greater good of mankind. Meanwhile, Eva and the Project Hail Mary team have been fighting a losing battle against the cooling sun—and their own demons—trying to make sure there were still people to be saved by the time the crew could send a solution home.
