Chapter Text
Luka's hands trembled badly, the fourth pregnancy test he took was still in his hand, while the other three were scattered around on the bathroom floor.
Two lines. He was pregnant.
He felt lightheaded and his vision started blurring into black, he knew he might pass out, so he blindly walked and threw himself on the living room's sofa and rested his head on the back of it, closing his eyes.
After a couple of seconds, his vision turned back slowly to normal, and he stared up at the ceiling.
How the hell did this happen? His boyfriend of nearly two months always wore condoms and he was on the pill, so how?!
At that moment the front door opened and his boyfriend, Gareth, entered.
"Hey love," he greeted from the door, before his tall frame appeared in front of Luka, he bent down and placed a kiss on Luka's cheek but then he quickly straightened and frowned at the absolute horror on his boyfriend's face.
"What's wrong?" Gareth asked, before he sat down next to Luka.
Luka looked away, he didn't know if he was ready to tell him or not, they've barely been together, and if it wasn't for Gareth's landlord kicking him out in the middle of the month that he needed an urgent place to stay, he wouldn't have been living with Luka.
"I- I-" Luka stuttered badly, he closed his eyes again, trying to calm himself down.
"Luka, what? You're worrying me."
"I'm pregnant." Luka uttered the words, his eyes big and sad, finally looking up at Gareth.
Despite Luka not knowing what to expect, his boyfriend's reaction was still surprising.
Gareth jumped up like a current had gone through his body.
He placed his hands over his head before he let out a breathy laugh, "You're joking, right?"
Luka didn't reply, he kept staring at the floor. Gareth's heart fell to the ground.
He knew Luka was serious.
.
Let's go back in time, shall we? What had gotten Luka into this whole mess in the first place.
Luka's life changed dramatically after his family moved to Spain from Croatia. His father had this new high-paying job in Madrid when Luka was 14 years old, close to the age of presentation. In fact some of his friends and relatives back home had already presented.
Attending the new school, Luka immediately felt overwhelmed, he was a foreigner, who didn't understand Spanish, and the kids almost always laughed at him when they talked and he didn't understand, but rather looked at them with a dumb look on his face, or so they described him.
He complained to his mother how much he hated the new school, his Spanish classes were going too slow for him to understand people around him, and he had no friends. So she suggested he join the football team, after all he was the best in his age group back in Croatia.
So he did.
When the coach introduced him to the team, they all laughed at his small frame and skinny legs. Others were angry at the coach, saying he'd make the team weaker and they'd lose the school tournament.
The coach dismissed them. He himself was also skeptical when he saw the short blonde boy coming to him asking to join the football team, so he tested him intensely and he saw a great potential in him.
“Quiet!” The coach yelled, “Ramos, come here,”
A tall handsome boy came to them, he was wearing the captain's armband around his bicep. Luka looked at his face and felt his heart beat faster.
It was one of those faces that demanded your attention, long light brown hair, eyes that sparkled like honey under the sunlight, along with a big, muscular body. Luka felt lost in him.
“This is your new teammate, Luka Modrić. Make sure they pass him the ball and engage him in the team, okay?”
“Yes, coach.” Sergio nodded and offered his hand to Luka, introducing himself.
“Sergio Ramos, I'm the captain. You're Luka right?”
“Luka Modrić, I can't speak Spanish good.” He said in his broken Spanish.
“Doesn't matter, we just need you to play good.” Sergio smiled, repeating Luka's mistake, and Luka felt himself mirroring him for the first time. “Come to meet the others.”
When Luka walked to them, a guy who he had seen before in science class complained, “We don't want an omega in our team!”
“Shut up, Piqué!” Ramos slapped his shoulder hard, and that made the guy immediately shut up.
“He clearly hasn't presented yet, but definitely omega.” Another said.
“How about you all shut up and start doing laps? Come on!” The coach shouted and clapped so everyone started moving.
Luka felt hurt. They were talking as if being an omega was an insult. Everyone somehow knew he was gonna present as an omega, and he was already hating it even before he actually did.
But no, he won't let them get to his head, if he was gonna be omega, he decided to show them how he played as an omega.
When they started running, Luka was the fastest. He dribbled the most, and he scored perfectly. He worked the field jumping like a bunny. The team was in shock.
“Good job today.” Sergio patted his shoulder when their training finished for the day. Luka smiled genuinely.
.
Days passed and Luka's time at the school was a little bit more bearable.
He met Marcelo, who was a new student also attending the Spanish class, and they became friends. Luka was happy to know he might join the football team too.
Marcelo had already presented as a beta, and he was the perfect mediator. He was funny and loved whenever he was, cracking jokes and making everyone feel at ease.
As his Spanish got better, he started to get along with the other students, but the football practice with the team stayed as his worst time despite him enjoying playing football. But having Sergio who was nice, and his new friend Marcelo made things better.
Speaking of the nice Sergio, Luka might have started to develop a small crush on him.
He later knew he wasn't the only one, nearly everyone had a crush on the football team's captain. Luka felt lucky he was able to stand a bit closer to him, way more than any of his classmates.
Without meaning to, his other teammates were starting to get jealous of his skills, they saw him as an omega -even though he hadn't presented yet- and their ego took a blow.
They couldn't beat him in the game, so they started to use strength to take the ball from him. By pushing him constantly.
One time as they were divided into two teams, playing against each other in practice, Luka got pushed badly, this time Sergio himself was the one to push him, making him fall in a loud thud in the ground.
Luka felt betrayed by the guy he thought he'd never hurt him like that, he whined as he felt like his back had broken in half and the coach whistled and stopped the game.
“Ramos, put your strength in check!” The coach scolded. “Luka, are you okay?”
“My back hurts.” Luka answered in broken Spanish.
Sergio came closer to him, he was sweating heavily, his long hair was falling wildly around his face, and he was clearly worried. Luka would lie if he said he didn't find him attractive. He was the hottest boy in school after all.
Sergio tried to help him up, offering his hand, but Luka swatted his hand away. They all do the same, make him fall and then try to help. He hated them. Despite how hot he found Sergio, he didn't want help from him this time if he wanted to treat him badly like the others.
Luka tried to stand up himself, but he couldn't, the pain was getting worse, and his eyes squeezed.
“This doesn't look good. Ramos, take him to the nurse.” The coach ordered and Luka felt himself being lifted and thrown over Sergio's shoulder in one swift move, he gasped.
He heard screams from Sergio's fans in the small audience who came to watch him practice, squealing over how strong he was, how hot he looked. Luka felt his face blush.
When they reached the nurse, Sergio put him softly on the bed. Luka kept his eyes shut, half in pain and half in embarrassment from being carried like a sack of potatoes in his crush’s arms.
Sergio explained to the nurse what happened, and the nurse went to work. She helped Luka take his shirt off before icing a huge bruise on his side and asking him questions about the pain.
When she finished wrapping his middle and giving him ibuprofen for the pain. Luka was surprised seeing Sergio was still standing in the room.
“Better?” He asked and Luka nodded shyly. He was shirtless and he felt Sergio's eyes on him, he quickly put his shirt on and regretted his speed when the pain intensified he had to let out a gasp.
“You don't look better. Can you walk? Or do you want me to carry you?” Sergio asked and Luka let out a loud “No!” one time was enough to make him a blushing mess.
“I'm so sorry Luka, I didn't mean to push you hard, the coach always scolds me that I can't control my strength. I swear I'm working on it but they say it's because I'm gonna be an alpha.” Sergio uttered and Luka felt better after the apology.
Of course Sergio was gonna be an alpha, his heart beat faster at the idea. They'd be the perfect pair if he was also presented as an omega.
He shook his head, what was he thinking?!
He's been having weird thoughts lately, and even weirder dreams. All about the teammate beside him. It couldn't be normal.
“I'll let the coach know you can't play anymore, go rest please, okay?” Sergio said before he walked him to the lockers and left him to change from his jersey and shorts.
.
After that day, Sergio had taken Luka under his wing, anyone who pushed him harshly or unnecessary, anyone who dared to hurt him in the game, had to face Sergio. And in return, Luka and Sergio became the perfect pair in football. Luka gave him perfect assists and Sergio scored, and they always celebrated with the biggest hugs that left Luka's heart fluttering happily.
They got closer through the year and became nearly inseparable. Luka met the other friends, Iker and Benzema, and they all formed a group along with Marcelo.
The days went smoothly and it was known to everyone that Ramos was Luka's alpha and Luka was his omega. Platonically to Sergio maybe, but Luka had developed feelings a long time ago.
It was obvious, but not to Sergio, who kept clinging to Luka, not noticing the boy so helplessly in love with him.
A year passed and they both presented, and as expected Sergio as an alpha and Luka as an omega.
Sergio presented first, it was in the summer of their first high school year, Luka's family was paying a visit to Sergio's to congratulate them on a new successful business, Luka was excited. He hadn't seen his friend in a long time, so when Sergio arrived at the family dinner, everyone noticed he looked different.
His voice got deeper, his upper body looked buff and even his eyes shined differently, but the biggest change was his hair, he had cut his hair short and grew a small beard. Luka's jaw opened at how hot Sergio looked.
When Sergio hugged him in greeting, Luka felt millions of butterflies explode in his stomach, with the scent of Oakwood reaching his nose in intense waves.
Luka felt weird, he felt hot all of a sudden, and he started sweating heavily, his back felt damp and he sensed something dripping from him.
He was horrified, his lower abdomen started to feel painful, he quickly excused himself to the bathroom, ignoring the way Sergio's eyes widened when he took a breath, apparently taken into his new scent.
Luka's underpants were drenched in slick that kept pouring out. In panic, he called his omega mom on the phone to come to him, he was so embarrassed but he needed her. Seeing his symptoms, she confirmed he was presenting as an omega.
That day was the most humiliating day ever in his life. His family had to rush him home, as there was a newly presented alpha in the house. Everyone knew why they had to do so, including Sergio, and Luka just wanted the ground to open and swallow him alive.
He literally presented because of short-haired alpha Sergio with his Oakwood scent.
In the old texts, that meant only one thing; they were mates.
But in the new world, barely anyone patted an eye over it, as the idea of mates became something rare and hardly spoken of.
When they saw each other after that, both acted like nothing happened and they avoided the topic all together like it never happened.
.
After they both presented, and with instincts driving him now, Sergio became even more protective of Luka if that was even possible, and Luka would be lying if he said he wasn't happy, he felt over the moon. Omega and Alpha. They complimented each other perfectly now.
But despite how perfect they fit, Sergio never seemed to want more with him. Yes he hugged him so tight he gasped, he kissed his cheeks daily, he stayed by his side and protected him, but that was it.
Luka didn't know what to do to make Sergio see him as more than a friend.
One day as he and Marcelo were having a light lunch outside, he confessed to his friend about his feelings towards Sergio and was surprised that apparently all their friends were aware of his feelings.
“Yeah, it's obvious.” Marcelo shrugged.
“It is??!!!”
“Are you kidding me? He threatens every alpha who shows even the tiniest bit of interest in you.”
“But no alpha ever showed any interest in me.” Luka sighed.
“Yeah, why do you think that?” Marcelo asked, and put his arms up in the air dramatically.
“Cause they don't find me attractive?” Luka answered in a question.
Honestly, no alpha or beta ever asked him out, they all always avoided him, he was sad he might smell bad as an omega but Sergio said he smelled amazing every time. He smelt of bergamot and hints of blue lotus, clean and unique, so he didn't know why, except maybe they didn't like how he looked.
“No way Luka! Objectively you are so pretty. It's because of that bodyguard who keeps leeching on your back.”
“Bodyguard?” Luka moved his head in wonder.
“Oh My God Luka! Sergio I mean. I just told you he threatens alphas so no one gets closer to you.”
“But that doesn't mean he necessarily likes me,” Luka shrugged. “I'm his best friend, he's just protective.”
“I'm his best friend too, and he beats me constantly.” Marcelo argued which made Luka laugh loud. “The point is, he treats you differently than all of us.”
“I wish, Marcelo, I like him a lot, but I always feel friend-zoned. No matter what I do.”
They stayed silent for a couple of minutes, only the sound of slurping noodles were heard, until Marcelo broke the silence.
“I think I know why,” Marcelo said, Luka lifted his head to look at him curiously, mouth full of noodles and lips glistening, “I think it's because of his family,” Marcelo added.
“What do you mean?” Luka swallowed before asking.
“Don't tell him I told you okay?” Marcelo asked and Luka nodded fast.
“Remember when I borrowed his notes last week? I had to drop them off in the afternoon and when I got there, their help opened the door for me, and since she knew me well she told me to wait in the living room.” Marcelo said, “And Sergio was fighting with his mother, their loud voices reached me while I was waiting downstairs.”
Luka frowned. Mrs. Ramos was one of the sweetest women ever, it was hard imagining her yelling at her beloved son.
“She was yelling that he needed to remember who he was and be responsible in his relationships and that he needed his parents’ approval before he asked anyone out, even for hookups. Apparently, they're already thinking of fixing his marriage to boost their business.”
Luka gasped. Fixing his marriage? He was a mere 16 years old!!
“You think he told them about me and they.. rejected me?” Luka asked in a broken voice, his omega already hurt.
“No, I don't think so. I think he's scared of taking this step and be faced with rejection from his parents, not that he has already taken it.” Marcelo quickly answered when he sensed Luka's worries.
“Besides,” he continued, “His family likes you a lot and I don't think they'd say no to you, you fit with their standards and your family already mingle in the high society. I think they'd approve. Give it some time.” Marcelo patted his knee and Luka nodded.
He'll do everything to be the perfect omega for Sergio and his family.
Oh little did he know.
.
Years passed and Sergio and Luka graduated, Luka went into Art school as he always wanted, while Sergio followed his father's steps in business school and started working at his father's company.
Not long after that, Sergio Ramos was now known as the most desirable and sought-after bachelor in Spain. Magazines, photoshoots, interviews and brands hooked him up nonstop. Luka was proud of him. He deserved it.
With this comes an endless amount of attention from omegas and Sergio got proposals left and right, that his family put down gently, saying he was still young. Luka knew now the real reason was none was up to their standards. He wondered what exactly were those anyway.
Luka was also getting proposals which he declined, his family already introduced him to four alphas whom he refused, before “the serious talk” came into view.
Luka's family was very traditional, which was expected. The higher the status, the more the family puts importance into virtue and relationships. While they weren't as strict in their standards as Sergio's family, they were worse when it came to him hooking up. No hookups at all before marriage and mating.
“Luka, what's the problem with all these alphas you rejected?”
“Nothing, father. I just don't think they're my mate.”
“Your mate? This old idea? No one cares about this anymore, son. Now, you marry for money and status, to get a higher position and stay secure, birth healthy pups that can actually be taken care of, not this mate bullshit.”
Luka frowned. “I meant I didn't think we're compatible, father.”
“Two of them you didn't even agree to meet.” His father fired back.
“Do you already have an alpha in mind, Luka?” His mother intervened.
Luka's eyes widened, he felt put under the spot, “What? No!”
“I'm not scolding you. If you have someone who's respectable, introduce him, your father and I promise to accept him as long as he's a good person and from a good family.” His mother added.
“There's no one.” Luka whispered.
“Then you wouldn't mind meeting someone new, right? it's Maria's son, you know Maria? The former mayor? She has a gorgeous son named Luke. See Luke and Luka? It's fate.”
Luka sighed, he knew Luke, he literally bullied him when he first arrived in Spain.
.
It was their usual meet up with his friends every Friday. Sergio was running late and asked them to order before him, saying Luka knew what he liked anyway. So it was only Luka, Iker and Marcelo. Benzema was on vacation.
Luka was having a conversation about thinking of changing his hair color and what color would suit him with Iker, while Marcelo was scrolling on his phone. Then suddenly, Marcelo turned his phone around, showing the screen to Luka.
“Look, he describes you in every magazine as his type. He should drop your name already.”
Luka grabbed Marcelo's phone to watch, it was a magazine that Sergio had an interview with, they were asking him about his ideal type to which Sergio answered,
“Someone nice and sweet, but also someone who isn't afraid of speaking their mind and wouldn't let me get away with everything, independent and strong-willed.”
“And physically?” The interviewer asked, chuckling.
“I like long blond hair, with prominent features, brown eyes maybe?” Sergio laughed too, “I don't know!”
Luka's heart swelled, he was sad and happy at the same time. He was so in love with Sergio now, that he felt he might explode.
“I can't take this anymore.” Luka said, giving the phone back to Marcelo.
“Can't take what?” Iker asked at the same time Marcelo cried, “Then confess!”
“It's- it's not easy.”
“It's never easy. What are you waiting for? If you don't act fast, either your family or his family is gonna succeed in fixing you two to someone.”
“I don't know why don't they fix them together?” Iker wondered.
“Maybe because they think they're just childhood friends. Luka or Sergio need to act fast and get together.”
“But why won't he say anything?” Luka sighed sadly, “Why does it have to be me doing it?”
“Doing what?” Sergio's voice came suddenly which made him jump in his seat, Sergio laughed at his adorableness before he pecked his cheek, his wrist moved along his neck quickly in subtle scenting.
“Hmm.. doing.. hm…” Luka stuttered and looked at his friends helplessly.
“Luka was dared to dye his hair black.” Marcelo came to the rescue, remembering what the omegas were talking about before.
“What? Who dared to dare him to do that!” Sergio frowned, before he took off his suit jacket, placing it behind his chair and sat down. He rolled his sleeves up and opened two of his shirt's buttons. Luka's eyes went to the tattoos on his muscular arms and he resisted the urge to trace them, preferably with his tongue.
“It was Iker.” Marcelo was quick to add, and Luka laughed when Iker stared blankly at Marcelo.
“Really Marcelo?” But Marcelo hugged him tightly in apology and laughed.
“Luka won't do it.” Sergio decided before he started eating what Luka already ordered for him.
“Who are you to decide?” Iker asked and Sergio's eyes went wide and was at the risk of choking to reply while swallowing.
“Okay, swallow first, Sergio. I don't want you choking, you have time to reply.” Luka reminded softly.
“I'm his BFF!” Sergio defended and Luka wished he didn't. It's not like he hated being called his BFF -even though he knows the term has been so outdated and no one ever used it anymore except Sergio- he just wanted to be more than that to him.
“But imagine how sexy he'd look in black hair.” Iker smirked.
“Sexy?” Sergio's ears perked up, he looked at Luka and narrowed his eyes, deep in thought, like he was considering it.
“I'm not doing it, Sergio.” Luka rolled his eyes.
“Good! I love your hair like this.” Sergio smiled and patted Luka's hair and Luka smiled, blushing a little, before he looked at his friends with sad eyes.
.
Marcelo felt bad for his friend, to be honest, for both of them.
He had to do something to help them out of their misery.
He invited Sergio to a bar, which he helped in designing it internally, he got two invitations to the opening, and while Iker had a night shift at the hospital, and he didn't wanna go alone, he invited Sergio, who refused at first until he heard the magic words “free drinks.”
“You're filthy rich and you like free stuff! I'm gonna make you pay anyway.” Marcelo murmured into the phone.
“Only with you, Mr. Marcy.” Sergio laughed.
They arrived at practically the same time, the place was packed but the owner had reserved one of the VIP tables for them and was over the moon to see Sergio Ramos coming to his bar. He shook his hand and kept coming to their table asking if they needed anything. He looked smitten with Sergio, despite being an alpha himself.
“This is nice.” Sergio commented, sipping his drink.
“I was worried about omegas coming to you, but instead you attracted the owner who's an alpha.”
“What can I say? They all love me.”
“And who does his highness love?” Marcelo joked.
The smile disappeared from Sergio's face, and Marcelo nearly felt bad for saying that.
“No one.” He said with a small voice, that was so unlike him.
“Oh really? Cause your ‘no one’ has gotten a new suitor and I heard his family likes the alpha a lot.”
“What?!” Sergio's eyes widened. “Luka got a new suitor?!”
“I thought you liked no one.” Marcelo smirked, and Sergio coughed.
“I hope he treats him well.” Sergio said bitterly. Not meaning it in the slightest. He didn't know what he'd do if that actually happened. He might actually murder the alpha.
“I don't understand what's stopping you from confessing to him? It's painful seeing you yearn so damn hard.”
“I don't think he likes me that way, Marcy.”
“Says who?! You're like the only alpha in his life, he looks at you like you hanged the moon and he refused all suitors already. Doesn't that give you hope?”
“I don't know.” Sergio clinched his teeth.
“Well, you better hurry and know, or he'd end up with another alpha. I don't know about you but I can't imagine my omega in another's alpha's arms.”
The sound of broken glass echoed in the room, the poor glass in Sergio's hand had shattered under the pressure of the alpha's grip.
“I'll take that like a bullet in my heart over losing him as my best friend. I can't take the risk of it. I- I can't live without him, it terrifies me.” Sergio uttered, opening his palm, the glass had cut through the flesh a little and the crimson blood was dripping into the table.
“You're giving up without even trying, I never saw you like this.” Marcelo wondered sadly, “Is there something you're not telling me?”
Sergio looked down and didn't answer.
At that moment, the bar owner came to check on his ‘favorite’ guest, wondering if he needed anything for the fourth time, to which Marcelo answered sarcastically.
“Yeah, bring us some alcohol, but the kind that cleans wounds, and some gauze.”
Sergio smiled at his friend's comment, swallowing over the lump in his throat.
And they both laughed when the bar owner let out a confused “Huh?”
.
Three hours later, Marcelo was sitting in the uber he ordered, with Sergio's head resting on his shoulder, drunk.
“He's so perfect and so small and he jumps so easily, like a little bunny. And when I hug him, he-” Sergio hiccuped, “He fits perfectly in my arms.”
“Yeah yeah, shut up.” Marcelo murmured.
Sergio became pathetic and a Luka's fan page speaking when drunk.
“My Lukita, I love him so much, but I can't be with him, it's so hard, like so hard. I woke up hard every day thinking of him.” Sergio slurred and Marcelo placed his hand over his mouth to shut him up when the taxi driver gave them the weird look.
“Sleep, Sergio. Sleep and you'll dream of Lukita.” Marcelo ordered. There was more than 15 minutes until they reached Sergio's mansion and he needed to shut him up.
“Really? Okay I wanna see my Lukita.” Sergio's eyes closed again and in seconds he started drooling over Marcelo's shoulders, who wondered why he was his best friend again.
He was glad he didn't drink that much. If he called Iker to pick them up from his shift at the hospital, he might have killed him. Both, he'd have killed them both. Marcelo sighed, oh his abusive omega, he loved him so much.
Marcelo's phone rang, cutting his unholy thoughts of his boyfriend. Marcelo looked at the caller ID and it was Luka.
“Oh what an immaculate time.” He said to himself before answering.
“Hello,”
“Hey Marcelo, how are you?”
“I'm good, and you?”
“Good too. I decided to do it. Next week, before his birthday.”
“Do what?” Marcelo sat up straighter, before he went back when Sergio's head slipped.
“Confess, I'll confess to Sergio.” Luka said breathlessly.
Marcelo laughed happily, he was so glad one of them finally came to his senses.
“So what do you think?” Luka asked anxiously, his breath came fast over the phone.
With Sergio's drool on his shoulder and the tiny snores and murmurs reaching his ears, Marcelo finally said,
“I think it's a great idea!”
