Summary:

Around December of 2109, strange towers begin appearing around the world. They dont respond to attempts at friendly communication with humans. Their windows mess with cameras. The creatures only observe from the inside.
Then Akari Reyes, a college student stranded in Colorado, accidentally finds a way to communicate with them using… a spirit box?

Oneeee small problem.

Nobody else can hear what the towers are saying.

Surprise mother truckers. Aliens.

Chapter 1: A Spirit Box…?

Chapter Text

The year was 2109, a few days into December, towers began appearing around the world along shores and on mountains. Military and special forces were deployed to the areas after a few hours of inactivity from the towers. Field teams figured out that they're some sort of ships maybe mobile homes..? Obviously not human, that's for sure. Weirdly enough, the ships appear to have windows at night. Field teams tried looking in but whenever field teams try to set up cameras near the windows specifically, they start glitching and deleting data from our systems.

The public began to get restless, worried about the possibility of a future "alien earth takeover" or something.

Days after the initial window discovery, humanoid looking creatures became visible from the outside of the ships. Just…staring. Were they planning something? Maybe checking surrounding to see if it was safe? We're they friendly?

Eventually teams managed to get into contact with the humanoids through radio signals, similar to what ghost hunters use. The person who figured that out was a college student who got stranded here in colorado when the airports closed down (thanks a lot Alien beings).

"Uh…hello, excuse me—"

The camp guard turned his gaze down to the weird ass kid sanding in front of him, cutting him off with a stern and gruff voice .

"This is a restricted area, kid. Go willingly before I call for backup. We're taking no chances."

The student shrinks back slightly at the tone before straightening up to look more professional, to be taken seriously probably.

"Sir—please. Hear me out. My name's Akari Reyes, I'm a college student. And I believe I've found a way to come in contact with the ships. Please, hear me out."

The camp guard keeps his gaze on Akari as he hesitantly reaches for his radio. Clearing his throat before speaking into the radio, presumably someone with higher clearance.

"Luceda requesting assistance. Possible code 102, I repeat, possible code 102. Over."

Soon after, Luceda's radio buzzes a bit as if the person replying were hesitant

"…back up on the way. Over."

After going through a very long and thorough inspection with security, Akari along with 3 guards went into the camps research room. The second the door opened, every head turned to Akari as if they had already heard what he claimed to have achieved.

"Luceda, report?" An older woman stood and strode over to the group.

Luceda glances at Akari before speaking "Akari Reyes, ma'am, he claims to have—"

He's cut off by the woman, Marissa. "I know that much. I need to know if any actual communication has occurred. Mr Akari?"

Akari steps forward, device in hand. "Yes ma'am, I managed to get a response to hello. Though it's not in any language i recognize. I recorded what was said."

She takes the recording and plays it on loop for the rest of the researchers to try and decode it. After doing so she turns back to Akari. "Your assistance is greatly appreciated, the more info we get the sooner we figure out what the deal is with our visitors."

"Though I must ask. What were you doing that led to contacting the visitors? What was your end goal"

Akari pauses for a bit before speaking up. "Ah— ma'am I was trying to run a paranormal investigation in our campus storage room."

"…really?" Marissa questioned, that was the last thing she expected to hear. "Mind elaborating?"

Akari, now slightly embarrassed replies "right!- you see, the device is what we call a spirit box, it flashes through radio channels and spits out words to communicate with spirits. At least that's what I expected to happen. At first it was static, but eventually it started piking up weird sounds. It wasn't anything that would play on the radio…so I shut it off and was preparing to head out when I overheard the hall televisions displaying the ships. The sound that the ship gave off sounded similar to the previous static. I figured it was a coincidence, but it didn't hurt to investigate a bit. So I turned the spirit box back on, I was met with weird babbling…and…I just thought it was best to report it to the camp."

Marissa and the guards exchange glances before turning back to the researchers on the computers.

"Ma'am, there's nothing on these recordings. It's a frequency to high to understand or hear. We tried tuning it down, even then..there's no patterns" One of the researchers states.

Heads turn back to Akari who seems confused, confident in what he had heard.

Over the next few hours, Akari consistently mimics whatever the spirit box says. The researchers recognize patterns in the speech. Confirming that Akari wasn't just messing with them, after all how bored did one have to be in order to mess with something so important.
