    Arthur hated the East. For all its boundless beauty, its dipping lowlands and towering mountains, its plants and animals and those who had been kind and continued to be so, Arthur hated it. It made him a worse man than he was before. It made him ugly. Made him violent. Made him utterly inhospitable. And as he dismounted his Shire on the edge of camp, he felt each of his worst aspects running down his arm – the blood of a whitetail buck he'd skinned beforehand staining him, painting him guilty.

    Perhaps that's just the way he was wired. Maybe this side of the mountains simply revealed a more truthful nature.
