Work Text:

The last few weeks had been busy.

Between work, keeping up with everything at home, and simply trying to make the most of their time together, Tim and Lucy had barely had a chance to stop and breathe. Their schedules had been full, and even when they were both home, there always seemed to be something that needed to be done. They had still made time for each other, because they always did, but they had both been looking forward to a day when they could simply stay home without having somewhere else they needed to be.

Today was finally that day.

They were both off, and for once, neither of them had anywhere they needed to be.

Dinner had been finished about an hour ago, the dishes had been cleared away, and now they were stretched out together on the couch with a movie playing on the television. It was one they had seen countless times, familiar enough that neither of them needed to pay close attention to know what was happening.

Tim had one arm around Lucy, and after a few minutes, he pulled her closer against his side.

Lucy turned her head toward him at the same time he looked down at her. Neither of them said anything. They simply leaned toward each other, meeting in a soft kiss that carried all the love and familiarity of the life they had built together.

When they parted, Lucy smiled and settled closer to him, resting her head against his chest. Tim adjusted his arm around her, making sure she was comfortable before turning his attention back to the movie.

Lucy sighed contentedly. "I love days like this where we don't have to come home exhausted after a long workday."

Tim smiled and looked down at her. "I know, love. I like that we can just cuddle on the couch today and didn't have to rush out the door this morning."

Lucy smiled, her cheek resting comfortably against his chest. She liked the feeling of having nowhere else to be, especially after the past few weeks. There was something nice about knowing she could stay right where she was, tucked against Tim, without either of them needing to get up and start thinking about the next thing on their list.

They continued watching the movie, laughing at silly scenes or quoting dialogue that they knew since this was a movie they had seen countless times. Sometimes they would say a line together and then look at each other, laughing because neither of them had even realized they were going to do it.

"You know, I think we've watched this movie too many times," Lucy said.

Tim looked down at her. "There's no such thing."

"You knew that line was coming."

"So did you."

"Because I've seen it with you at least twenty times."

"Exactly. It's tradition."

Lucy laughed and shook her head as she tucked herself closer against him.

The room was comfortable around them. The television provided most of the light, while the rest of the house was calm and still. For once, there was no schedule they needed to follow and no reason to keep checking the time.

They could simply sit together.

Then a soft patter sounded against the windows.

Halfway through the movie, it started raining lightly. Lucy cuddled closer to Tim, and he smiled as he wrapped his arms tighter around her.

"I actually like listening to rain when we're inside," Lucy said.

"Me too."

They continued watching the movie while the rain tapped gently against the windows.

Ten minutes later, a downpour started. Tim looked toward the window and smiled. "Love, you ever play in the rain when you were a kid?"

Lucy giggled. "Oh my God, no, I never did. My parents weren't strict. They just didn't want me catching a cold from the rain."

Tim chuckled. "Stand up."

Lucy lifted her head, immediately suspicious. "Babe, what are you doing?"

"Come on. Up you go."

She laughed as she pushed herself off the couch and stood. "Okay, I'm up. What now?"

Tim stood as well and looked at her.

Lucy was wearing a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, and she wasn't wearing any socks.

Tim's mouth curved into a mischievous smirk. "Perfect."

Lucy narrowed her eyes. "What does perfect mean?"

Instead of answering, Tim reached for her hand. "Come on."

Still completely confused, Lucy placed her hand in his. "What is it, love?"

Tim walked with her toward the back sliding door.

"Babe..."

He opened the door.

Lucy stopped and looked outside at the pouring rain before turning back toward him. "Babe, what?"

Tim turned toward her with that same unmistakable smirk.

Before she could figure out what he was planning, he tugged her outside with him.

Lucy shrieked as the rain immediately soaked her hair and clothes. "Tim! What are you doing?"

He chuckled, catching her around the waist and picking her up before she could protest. "Tim!"

He carried her down the deck steps, both of them laughing as the rain poured over them.

By the time he reached the yard, they were already soaked.

Tim stopped in the middle of the grass and spun around with Lucy in his arms before finally setting her back on her feet.

Lucy stared at him, her wet hair sticking to her face as she tried to catch her breath between laughs. "You're insane."

Tim winked at her. "Insane for you, baby."

Lucy reached toward him, still laughing. "You're ridiculous."

Tim suddenly took off running. "Catch me if you can, baby!"

Lucy stood there for a second, staring after him in disbelief.

Then she shook her head and laughed. "Oh, that's it!"

She took off after him.

Tim's laughter floated across the backyard as he ran through the wet grass, glancing over his shoulder at her.

Lucy giggled as she chased after him. She loved seeing this carefree side of Tim that not many people got to see.

Most people knew the serious side of him. They knew the disciplined man who took his responsibilities seriously and rarely allowed himself to let his guard down.

Lucy knew that man too, but she also knew the man standing in front of her now.

The man who would drag his wife outside into a downpour simply because he wanted her to experience something he had loved as a kid.

The man who was laughing as he ran through the backyard without caring that they were both completely soaked.

This was Tim when he wasn't thinking about work or responsibilities.

This was Tim simply being happy.

And Lucy loved that she got to see it.

She gained on him, and Tim looked over his shoulder just as she reached him.

"Got you!"

He turned around at the same moment, but his foot slipped in the wet grass.

"Whoa!"

Lucy barely had time to react before Tim went down, taking her with him.

She shrieked as they fell into the grass, and then both of them burst into laughter.

Tim was lying on his back, still laughing as he held onto Lucy to make sure she didn't roll away.

Lucy looked down at him, her own laughter coming freely as the rain came down harder around them. "You did that on purpose."

Tim shook his head. "I absolutely did not."

"You totally did."

"I slipped."

"Sure you did."

Tim laughed again.

Lucy couldn't help smiling as she looked at him. Rain ran down his face and through his hair, and somehow he looked happier than she had seen him in days.

She reached toward him, brushing some wet hair away from his forehead.

Tim leaned up and kissed the top of her head before wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close.

Lucy laughed against him. "You are crazy."

"Maybe."

He kissed her again, meeting her lips in a warm, loving kiss as they lay together in the rain.

The kiss was full of warmth and affection, completely natural between them. There was nothing uncertain about the way they loved each other. They had built a life together, shared the ordinary days and the difficult ones, and knew each other well enough that moments like this didn't need an explanation.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

There was no work.

No schedules.

No responsibilities waiting for them inside.

There was just the two of them, laughing together in their backyard like they were teenagers who had just discovered the rain for the first time.

When Tim finally pulled back, he smiled at her.

Lucy laughed and gave his chest a playful slap. "Let's go, you crazy man."

Tim smiled as he got to his feet.

He held out his hand, and Lucy took it, letting him help her up.

She was still laughing as she turned to walk toward the house, but before she could take more than a step, Tim reached out and caught her hand again.

"Hold on, love."

Lucy turned back toward him. "What is it, love?"

Tim smiled. "Dance with me in the rain."

Lucy looked at him for a moment before her face broke into another smile. "Okay."

Tim's grin widened. "That's my girl."

He guided her into his arms, and they began swaying together in the middle of the backyard.

The rain continued pouring around them, soaking through their clothes as Lucy laughed against him.

Tim turned them slowly, moving with the rhythm of the rain and the laughter that kept slipping from Lucy. Then he spun her out before bringing her back into his arms.

Lucy laughed as he caught her. "You are having way too much fun."

"You've never played in the rain before. I'm making up for lost time."

"By dragging me outside?"

"Exactly."

Tim spun her again, and this time, he dipped her.

Lucy screamed, immediately grabbing onto him. "Baby!"

Tim laughed as he brought her back upright. "You gonna drop me?"

"Never, baby."

The answer came without hesitation.

Lucy smiled at him, her hands resting against his shoulders as she caught her breath.

She slipped her hands through her wet hair, pushing it away from her face before wrapping her arms around him again.

Tim held her closer, and they kissed in the middle of the rain.

The kiss was full of warmth and affection, the kind that came naturally between two people who knew each other completely and loved each other just as deeply.

When they finally separated, Lucy rested her forehead against his for a moment, both of them smiling.

Tim looked at her. "Let's go inside and take a warm shower."

He gave her a playful wink.

Lucy giggled. "Let's go."

Tim started toward the deck steps with her, but Lucy suddenly pulled away.

"Race you!"

Before he could answer, she took off running.

Tim stared after her for half a second before laughing. "Oh, you're on!"

He ran after her.

Both of them raced across the yard, laughing as the rain poured down around them. Their feet slipped slightly in the wet grass, forcing them to grab onto each other more than once as they tried to make it up the deck steps.

Lucy reached the steps first.

"I win!"

Tim caught up with her as she climbed the last step.

He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close at the back door. "Correction. We both win."

Lucy looked up at him, still smiling. "How do you figure?"

Tim looked at her with complete certainty. "We have each other."

Lucy's expression softened.

She wrapped her arms around him. "Yeah. We do."

Tim smiled and picked Lucy up, making her laugh as he carried her through the back door and into the house.

Their laughter filled the house as they headed toward the bathroom, leaving a trail of rainwater behind them while the movie continued playing on the television in the other room.

For once, neither of them cared about the mess.

The wet footprints could be cleaned up.

The movie could be finished later.

The clothes could go into the laundry.

Right now, all that mattered was that they were together, still laughing, still wrapped up in the happiness of a completely ordinary evening that had somehow turned into one they would remember.

And as Tim carried Lucy toward the bathroom, her arms still around his neck and her laughter following them down the hallway, neither of them was ready for the night to end just yet.
