Work Text:
Zuko stood at the window, watching the edge of the indigo sky lighten above the moored ships. The crew were already bustling about on the dock down below, faint figures loading cargo and finalizing checks. Katara yawned down the stairs to his side. “If I had told the sailors I could use my bending to sail faster, do you think I could still be asleep and we could leave later?”
He didn't turn his head. “You don’t like seeing the sunrise?”
She leaned against his arm and put her head on his shoulder. “Hmmm, I prefer seeing the moon.”
He debated whether to try putting his arm around her, but decided to let her be. “Of course you do. She’s over there,” he pointed with his free arm over to the side where the moon hangs just visible over the trees.
“She’s tired, like me. Drooping into bed at the horizon.”
“I suppose so. I would love to watch the sun rise every day.”
Katara yawned again. “After all the time spent traveling around with Aang sleeping outside and being woken up by the beginnings of morning every day, I can’t see myself ever wanting to do that.”
“Oh.”
Her head left his shoulder as she turned to head out towards the harbor, and Zuko's gaze followed. “But if the sun is you, I could see myself making an exception..”
“Oh?”
Her eyes met his with a sleepy but coy smile as she drifted through the doorway out of view. He turned to look at the sky again before following. The first light of the awakening sun just kisses the moon with painted colors. Maybe picturing a happy life wasn’t just wishful thinking and pleasant dreams. Zuko let out a long breath, smiled, and turned from the window. It’s going to be a good day.
