Work Text:

Dazai Osamu was bored. Terribly, irrevocably bored.

Well, perhaps that wasn't quite the right word to describe how he was feeling. The sixteen-year-old lay down on his back, his one unconcealed eye tracing the rusting roof of the shipping container he called home. He’d taken pills earlier. And a bottle of alcohol. It’d knocked him out for a solid few hours, but inevitably—unfortunately—he woke again to the same grim reality.

Boredom wasn't right after all, he decided. Perhaps desolate was more fitting. Poetic, even.

The bandages on his arms were loose, fresh slashes partially visible beneath the stained dressings. Had he done that? It was a haze. He felt the pain, but it didn't mean anything. It wasn't enough.

Half an hour ticked by, and the ceiling never grew to be any more interesting than it had been in the last two years.

He lazily let his head fall to its side. To his right lay his phone, discarded.

Something possessed him to pick it up, limbs clumsy and slothful. The first contact number was named “Slug”. How annoying. He clicked call.

A beat passed.

Click.

“What.”

Dazai didn't say anything. His lips parted once, twice, but every word died on his tongue. No teasing remark. No witty barb. No arrogant demand. Nothing.

“Oi, Dazai? Don't tell me this is a butt dial…” The scowl was audible through his partner’s tone, the already gruff voice pitching a tad lower in irritation and impatience.

“What’re you doin’ right now?”

The question slipped out unbidden.

“Hah? What’s go you so nosy allova sudden?” Chuuya scoffed but answered anyway, “I was ‘boutta go for a ride.”

“Mm,” he hummed noncommittally in response. He wanted Chuuya to keep talking. Anything to distract him. Even something stupid.

Then, “Where’re you?”

His gaze swept the bare and dim space. His hesitation lingered for a breath. “Home, I guess.” What else was he supposed to title it?

“I’ll be there in ten. And if you’re wasted or bleeding, imma kill you.” The threat was a little too late and more than a little too futile. “So don't you dare.”

“…okay.”

“See ya.”
