Summary: In a world where soulmates found each other by speaking each other’s full names, Peter is obsessed with finding out Stiles’ first name and with hearing Stiles say ‘Peter Hale’. But Stiles has always guarded his first name well, because in Polish culture, people were supposed to get to know each other first and fall in love before sharing their full names. Also, all things feral Peter considered, Stiles thought the wolf needed to work for it.
Your Name on My Lips
Stiles Summer Stories 2026
Stiles knew that if someone said his full name, he would know for sure. That name, once spoken, would mark his soulmate’s skin if they were soulmates. And then Stiles could say the other person’s name and he would receive that name on his own skin. He knew, because his mother and father had each other’s names on their skin.
There were different cultural approaches to finding one's soulmate. Polish culture, where both his parents came from, saw soulmates as something so sacred that one shouldn’t be casual with their name. It was why the majority of town now only knew Noah as ‘the sheriff’, most not even knowing his first name. Because his name had been for his soulmate, and now his soulmate was dead. It was custom to go by diminutives and nicknames in casual day to day, many guarding their first names like the treasures they were.
Stiles did too. At first, because it was how his parents had raised him, telling him that he had to wait for that special someone he thought he would want to spend the rest of his life with and only then he should share his name. Later on, because he saw how much losing Claudia had destroyed Noah and he grew afraid. The pain that soulmates could bring was devastating.
As a child, he used to go by Mietek, one of the many diminutives of his first name. Mischief, by his mother, after Stiles was old enough to try and pronounce, and fail, to say his name. After her death, neither. He went by Stiles. Because he couldn’t avoid people finding out his last name, but this way his first name was truly hidden, with no hints given to others.
He was going to make sure nobody ever said Mieczysław Stilinski, so he would never find his soulmate, so he would never have someone who could break him the way Claudia’s death had broken his dad. If he never found his soulmate, he couldn’t lose them.

Peter Hale was the son of romantics. All Hales had short, simple names. Easy to say, quick to introduce. Like most Americans and English folks, they believed in finding their soulmate at first introduction. He knew other cultures didn’t use names at all in introductions, but Americans were quite straightforward in saying their full names when first meeting someone, and saying the other’s name right back to them. To see off the gate if someone was their soulmate.
This was how Peter had to endure both his siblings in their happy, loving soulmate relationships from a relatively young age. The longer Peter didn’t meet his soulmate, the more frustrated he grew.
And then the Hale Fire happened. Six years in a coma. Abandoned by what pack remained.
When he woke up again, at first, the idea of finding his soulmate wasn’t on his mind at all. What use did he have for a soulmate who wasn’t there for him during the worst time of his life? He needed to think practical, not romantic. He needed his revenge. Kate and her ilk needed to die.
And then there was the boy. Fierce and vicious, taunting Peter as he locked the Alpha into the school. Pretty, pink mouth and honey-golden eyes. The boy who figured out that Peter was the Alpha. When Peter heard Derek’s voice through the phone, calling the boy Stiles, something in Peter stirred. That part of him that had been yearning to find his soulmate.
“You must be Stiles,” Peter said with emphasis and a smile, wishing to know the boy’s last name.
“Y… You’re…” Stiles stared at him with wide eyes and Peter’s wolf thought eager and triumphantly yes, yes, say it, say my name. “You’re the Alpha.”
Before Peter could make the boy say his name did Derek interrupt and things escalated.

Stilinski. The boy was the son of Sheriff Stilinski. Which meant that Stiles was not his name, it was a nickname, derived from his last name. Just as Peter thought he had the second half of the puzzle, he was left missing the boy’s first name. And he didn’t seem able to find it. School records that he went through left him coming up empty.
There were ways to conceal one’s legal first name, as long as they provided a sufficient alternative – Stiles, in this case – if the person had a religious or cultural reasoning for it. Stilinski was a Polish last name. Peter did a little dive, in between killing hunters, and learned that in Polish culture, one had to first gain another person’s trust and affection to be privy to their full name. Unless the person already had found their soulmate, then they were more open with it, partially to show off their status as soulmates. This complicated things for Peter, of course.
Alas, it didn’t make him want Stiles any less. More the opposite, really. He loved a challenge.
When Peter stole the boy away from the lacrosse field, after biting the banshee to activate her dormant genes and ensure a way for himself to come back, in case things went south, well, Peter couldn’t resist taking the boy. The urge to keep was too overwhelming. His wolf had chosen. To him, as a born wolf, hearing that beautiful boy say Peter’s name would only serve as proof for something he already knew deep down. Stiles was his and his alone.
“I don’t believe we’ve been formally introduced yet, sweetheart,” Peter smiled sharply, his fingers curled around the boy’s chin. “I’m Peter Hale.”
“I know, asshole,” Stiles glared at him. “You’re Derek’s very clearly creepy uncle.”
Peter ground his teeth together, feeling like he was being tested by his soulmate. The boy didn’t give his own name, didn’t repeat Peter’s back to him. Very well. Peter was going to make Stiles see the truth that was so palpable to Peter. They were meant to be. Patience. After six years in a coma and three decades of searching for his soulmate, Peter had learned patience. Well, not really. But patience seemed much more rewarding and easy when what he wanted was right before him.

Peter was giving Stiles really shady vibes. The wolf was a little too obsessive with him. The kidnapping, the parking garage, the bite offer. The fact that Peter hadn’t hurt him, even though he had hurt pretty much everybody else he interacted with.
Stiles knew that wolves could tell. He’d seen it, with Scott and Allison. Even before they had said each other’s names, Scott had felt the draw, he’d said. It was different than just a crush, he’d said. A pull, like something inside his chest just knew. So Stiles went and bothered Derek about it until the Sourwolf admitted that werewolves could indeed feel the soulmate bond in a way humans couldn’t. That the wolf could tell even before the names were spoken.
So, running theory was that he may be soulmates with a murderous, feral werewolf. Great.
After they set Peter on fire, Stiles sullenly wondered if it even still mattered. He’d always said he’d guard his name to protect his heart. So he would never find his soulmate. Now he would never know if Peter really had been his soulmate, or if the wolf’s obsession with Stiles had merely been a side-effect of the insanity born from his long isolation and loss of pack.
When Stiles curled together on his bed that night, still smelling the smoke, a single tear ran down his cheek despite it all, because to a part of him – the little boy who had admired his parents’ soul-marks and dreamed of one day finding the love they had – it mattered a lot and it hurt even more.

Scott and Stiles joined the Hale Pack after the kanima incident at detention. When Stiles held a seizing Erica through it all, when Scott finally seemed to realize that they needed to work together to fight a shared enemy. Joining the Hale Pack came with bonding with Derek’s untrained puppies. Erica was quick to be affectionate with him. Isaac was more reluctant but at the rave, he still followed Stiles’ lead, showed some trust in Stiles and even a certain protectiveness, like being pack really did mean something. Boyd was quiet, but Stiles also knew he was cutting and sharp, and it was nice to talk to the guy because usually, Boyd just let him talk.
Stiles really thought he’d found his place in the Hale Pack. Had finally found friends, in a plural. Even spending time with Allison, Lydia and Jackson while hunting the Alpha hadn’t exactly felt like having friends. Allison was Scott’s soulmate, Lydia and Jackson came as a package deal only because of Allison, they’d never looked at Stiles twice, much less considered spending time with him. And the whole kanima drama did really hold Lydia’s whole attention. Also the part where Peter was apparently haunting her to resurrect himself. Putting a pin on that.
But the Hale Pack felt like he had friends. And the hours he spent in the Argent basement with Boyd and Erica, getting tortured by Gerard, they forged a very unique bond. Stiles, human as he was, healed much slower than the two wolves, but he’d still taken more hits than them. Drawing and keeping Gerard’s attention, to protect his pack mates. Both Boyd and Erica knew, recognized what he was doing, and grew protective of him afterward.
After the warehouse. After Jackson turned into a real wolf. After Scott betrayed Derek. After Stiles found himself face to face with his recently resurrected soulmate for the first time.
“What happened to you,” Peter’s voice was a growl, his eyes the same blazing blue as Derek’s used to be, before he’d become an Alpha. “Who did that to you, sweetheart?”
A clawed finger curled beneath Stiles’ chin, tilting his head so Peter could have a better view on the bruised up and scratched up cheek. Stiles was honestly too drained to fight back right now. Today had been too much and seeing his soulmate who should be dead was the cherry on top it all.
“Just drop it, Zombiewolf,” Stiles muttered, closing his eyes. “I’m fine. And Gerard’s going to very grossly and slowly die now anyway.”
“Gerard,” Peter repeated, as he got his answer anyway. “I’ll make it slow, don’t worry, but faster than the rejection. Wouldn’t want to risk him finding a cure or anything. He’ll die tonight.”
Peter smiled and it was all fangs and it shouldn’t be attractive, it should be scary. But Peter threatening the life of the person who’d just tortured Stiles? Well, kind of attractive, honestly.

Things changed, after that day. Scott was no longer part of the Hale Pack, having quite loudly proclaimed not just with his words but with his actions that Derek wasn’t his Alpha and that he had not half an ounce of respect for the wolf who, only days ago, had saved Scott’s life from Victoria.
Stiles, as mentioned, grew much closer to Boyd and Erica though, so the void left by that betrayal was filled with new, protective friends, who would sneak into his house at nights where they were haunted by nightmares of the torture, or who would visit during the day, to play video games.
“Catwoman is superior in all universes,” Erica declared with a grin.
They were playing Injustice. Boyd, more reluctantly so, but Stiles had very successfully converted Erica into a real DC fan over the past couple weeks. Had even gotten her to read some comics. And while she did end up really liking Catwoman, Stiles was starting to think that Stephanie Brown may have turned out to be Erica’s real favorite. Which was a display of good taste, really.
“The whole nicknames thing,” Boyd nodded at Stiles. “That’s a soulmate thing, right?”
“You think, Boyd whose first name I don’t even know?” Stiles asked amused.
Boyd met him with the same kind of grin. “Yeah, it’s a cultural thing. We don’t do that, giving our full name out to anyone. Only to… that really special someone.”
His gaze wandered to Erica and oh. Stiles’ eyes widened at the way Erica flushed. Oh.
“You two? For real?” Stiles asked wide-eyed, motioning between them.
“Yeah,” Erica shrugged. “I mean, kind of felt the draw since I met Boyd in the pack, but I figured it was just attraction? I was too new to the whole werewolf thing to understand?”
“And I’m sure Derek never really had a Werewolf 101 that covered things not related to control and fighting,” Stiles snorted and rolled his eyes when both grunted their agreement. “Go figure.”
“It was the basement,” Boyd admitted softly. “When I knew for sure. I felt more protective of both of you after that, but… in different ways. There was an incomparable rage in me about Erica being injured. We talked, after that, and… confessed. And shared our names with each other.”
“I mean, kinda already knew Erica’s name,” Stiles pointed out.
“Middle name,” Erica smiled brightly. “Also mom’s last name. Puerto Rican naming culture does include sharing both your parents’ last names, but especially in the US, we mostly just go by one last name, to keep some… to ourselves. For our soulmates.”
“I’m happy for you guys,” Stiles grinned. “And yeah. Yeah, the, uh, excessive nickname thing is a way to prevent myself from accidentally saying someone’s full name. I don’t… want to know.”
“At all?” Erica asked surprised. “I mean, I didn’t want to know with just some random stranger, I only wanted to know after I knew I could trust them and could love them.”
She bit her lip and shot Boyd a look at that the big guy practically melt. Oh, they were going to be absolutely disgusting and unbearable. Stiles smiled to himself as he looked at them.
“I… kinda already know, without knowing,” Stiles said vaguely and gave a shrug. “It’s better left unsaid, I think. Things are… messy and complicated enough.”
Both Boyd and Erica frowned at that, but they did drop the matter and concentrated on the game. Stiles was grateful for it because he really didn’t want to think about Peter Hale and all the confusing, complicated things the man made him feel. Ever since his resurrection, Peter was… different. More put together, no longer feral now that he was part of a proper pack again. Charming, witty and sarcastic. Gorgeous to look at too, obviously. Annoyingly protective of Stiles and clingy, always volunteering to stay behind with Stiles and do research while the rest of the pack did patrol. They bantered and researched and Peter would just look at him so softly and smitten and listen to him talk and it was too good to be true, which was a problem. Stiles was falling in love with Peter.
/break\
Peter knew he had Stiles’ affection, at least to a certain degree. The boy had come to tolerate him, whenever they did research on whatever threat their territory faced that week, and what had started out as wary glares and half a loft between them had turned to them sitting right next to each other on the couch, hunched over the same book, their knees touching. Peter was allowed to cook them dinner, to provide for his mate, Stiles even complimented his cooking.
Yet the boy continued to refuse to say his name. Zombiewolf, Creeperwolf, when Stiles was feeling more generous maybe a Pretty Wolf in a mocking tone. Asshole, bastard and other choice names when Peter was really pissing him off. Never Peter. Much less Peter Hale.
Peter yearned to hear his name roll off that boy’s tongue. Even if he knew of the bond between them, he wanted it to grow strong, to cement itself in Peter’s soul, and it could only do that after they’d both spoken each other’s names. Peter was no closer to finding out Stiles’ first name either.
The damn clever boy even had fake names strewn about. Theories and gossip in school that he must have spread himself. Genim Stilinski. Rupert Stilinski. John Stilinski Junior.
Peter was frustrated. He just wanted to say his soulmate’s name so he could bear it on his skin.
“I hate this,” Stiles groaned next to him as they stalked through the preserve. “I much prefer the staying at the loft with the shiny, old books thing. The preserve is for wolves to run through.”
Peter chuckled and turned to watch his pretty soulmate pout. “Well, these fire-breathing, winged snakes are a bit of a problem. The pack’s spread thin looking for them and your magic may be the best way to take them out, so we’ll need you, little Spark.”
Which had been another marvelous realization about Stiles. Stiles just huffed annoyed. The pack had split up in pairs of two to go look for the monsters and Peter had, naturally, volunteered himself to go with his boy. Derek had simply glowered at him, knowing that Stiles would be safest with Peter, that Peter would do anything to protect his soulmate.
Peter got to prove that not five minutes later, when him and Stiles actually came across the beasts they were hunting and one of the huge snakes lunged at Stiles, jaws wide open to take a bite out of the boy. Peter pushed Stiles out of the way and took the bite himself. He howled in pain as the long fangs sank into his skin. The venom burned as it spread.
“No!” Stiles’ yell echoed through the woods, birds taking off into the sky to flee the Spark’s wrath.
Peter was on the ground, staring up, watching in awe how the snakes one by one were struck by lightning. Where the sky had been blue and lit up with the light of the midday sun, dark clouds had gathered over the Spark and Stiles, with his eyes a blazing teal, was bringing down divine lighting to kill the creatures. Too late, Peter supposed. All their research hadn’t really found a cure to the creatures’ venom. A small smile spread over Peter’s lips.
“Suppose it’s poetic, isn’t it,” Peter wondered as he turned his head some, seeing the ruins of his childhood home in the not too far distance. “The preserve really is the graveyard of the Hales.”
At least he’d be with his family soon, then. Stiles sank down onto his knees hard and cradled Peter close, tears running down his face as he pressed a hand against Peter’s injury. Yes, Peter regretted not getting more time with his soulmate, never gaining Stiles’ love. But Stiles would be fine.
“No,” Stiles spat, his eyes even more intense. “You can not die on me, Peter Hale. I won’t allow it.”
Peter’s eyes widened as the magic of the soulbond settled between them. The real shock was the sensation of the pain subsiding, when Stiles used his magic to draw out the venom. Peter blinked.
“Mieczysław,” Stiles whispered softly as he collapsed forward onto Peter. “Mieczysław Stilinski.”
“Mieczysław Stilinski,” Peter repeated in awe, watching the name form on his own forearm.
When he looked over, he saw his own name on Stiles’ arm. The boy was still holding him tight. Peter sat up some, enough to pull the boy close, shushing him as Stiles sobbed.
“It’s okay, Mieczysław, you saved me,” Peter whispered gently. “I’m not leaving you. Never again.”
