Dr. Ryland Grace’s life was normal and fine. Good, even. He made his living as a science communicator for a video production studio— The “Bill Nye for Gen Alpha”, they called him. As the show grew in popularity online, he felt satisfied, but restless for something else. Then he met an engineer.
James “Rocky” Rockfield had lived in San Francisco his whole adult life, working as an engineer for a company that built mass spectrometers. He was a cog in a machine that created machines, and he liked it that way. Rocky played piano at jazz bars on the weekends, was in what the kids would call a “queerplatonic relationship” with his partner Adrian, and at least had enough disposable income to buy a fancy coffee every day. What more could he want? Then he met a scientist.
