Summary
On the wall in the hallway by Shane's childhood bedroom there's a photograph of Shane next to the MLH cup. He's got his hands behind his back and a rapturous expression on his face.
Shane was about six years old when he really got what it meant to win the MLH cup. That year, the Detroit Falcons end up winning the cup, and their forward Ryan Connelly does a few hours of his cup day at the rink where Shane skates. It's the first time Shane sees the cup in person. Most of the kids on his team swarm the cup, eager to touch something that's such a huge part of what they do.
Shane doesn't. He holds his own hands behind his back so that he doesn't touch the cup. It's a superstition he's heard about a few times: if you touch the cup before you win it, you'll never win it. That means if you want to touch the cup, you have to win it.
