Chapter 1: death

Chapter Text

Having your mind deteriorate exponentially under the pressure of becoming a prison for an eldritch god wasn’t the kind of pain you’d think it’d be. At least, it wasn’t what D3rlord had expected; in fact, he’d imagined it as much more painful.

So, this was a sort of upside to the fact that he wouldn’t live to see another day.

Avery shook in his arms, his body wracked with shuddering sobs. Derek did his best to stay strong for Avery’s sake, but a few tears slid down his face. His helmet had been long abandoned, on the platform a few feet away. He could practically feel all the eyes in the void looking at them as they deteriorated and the King began to resemble something akin to dying.

“Please don’t think you failed, Avery,” Derek said softly. If anything, Avery only clung to him harder.

“Please don’t do this,” he choked out, his voice breaking. “It doesn’t have to be like this- it can- you can- you can still go back-”

“Avery, you need to go,” Derek said. “Please. If this fails, we both die.”

“I don't care,” Avery said. “It's not fair.”

Derek pulled away calmly, taking Avery’s hands. Avery just looked at the floor as tears rolled down his face. He cupped Avery’s cheek in his hand, brushing away a few tears with his hand. Derek saw his own glowing yellow eyes in the reflection of Avery’s dark brown irises.

“I’m glad I got the chance to see the beauty of the universe,” Derek said. “And to meet you. I don’t regret anything. You’re capable of great things and you’ll do great things without me, okay? And it doesn’t take infinite knowledge to see it.

“Whatever you do at the crossroads…”

“I know, I know,” Avery said, rubbing his eyes. “Don’t turn left.”

Derek smiled. “Keep going forward.”

Avery’s smile faded, looking up at him in surprise. Derek didn’t hesitate.

He took the moment to push Avery hard off the edge of the platform.

Derek watched as Avery’s face went from shock to betrayal to desperation and he only fell further into the void.

TheMostMayo fell into the void

Derek didn’t know how long he was standing there; his perception of time was nonexistent. He didn’t feel pain; instead, he was painfully numb, feeling so much of everything that he simply felt nothing.

He didn’t remember falling. At some point he went from standing to on one knee. The King’s eye deteriorated behind him. His vision blurred, his ears rang, and then…
