Laying on the ground wondering why it's so cold

Summary:

The world is going through an eternal frost, but despite it all, Wilbur is having trouble staying himself. Maybe there's a way to fix his frozen heart.

Notes:

A fic based on this old idea of mine, but I've changed it quite a bit. It didn't turn out like the original idea at all, but I hope y'all still like it.

Work Text:

“Dad! Wil’s trying to kill me again!” Tommy screeches as he dodges the barrage of ice flying out of Wilbur’s hands with his own barrage of flames.

Phil sighs, turning around and raising his hands in the air right in front of his chest. Magic flows out of his fingertips and into Wilbur’s temples, immediately putting him to sleep and making him fall into Tommy’s awaiting arms. “He’s been doing that a lot more lately.” Phil says as he and Tommy tuck Wilbur into his bed.

Tommy’s brows furrow as he watches his brother fall into a deep sleep. “Weren’t you researching this? Whatever happened to that?”

More magic flew out of Phil’s fingers and into Wilbur’s sleeping form. “Yeah, but I got stumped. I need some ice magic, but to get more ice magic I need to harvest the heart of someone with ice magic. Unfortunately for us, Wilbur is the only person we know with ice magic. It’ll be impossible to find someone else with ice magic because of how rare it is, let alone get close enough with them to kill them and harvest their organs just to save my son. There are a lot of complications that limit me in how to help him or pause his transformation.”

“Damn,” Tommy mutters, moving a strand of hair out of Wilbur’s face so he can warm him up with the steam that flows out of the palm of his hands. “Is there no way to temporarily take away his powers or put him into a coma until we can figure out how to help him?”

Phil sighs again. “I can do that with no problem, but he’ll only stay in limbo for so long. Remember the last time we had to knock him out for a while?”

Tommy groaned. This situation was getting more and more complicated by the second. “Ugh, don’t remind me! I still have nightmares about that shit!”

Just as they moved to leave Wilbur’s room, the front door flew open. Techno stormed in out of the blizzard, covered in frost with axes raised. At seven feet tall, he completely towered over Tommy and Phil.

“How’s Wil holdin’ up?”

Tommy let out a shaky breath and Phil chuckled as he shook his head. “Hey, Techno. Wil’s fine. Almost killed Tommy again, but he’s in a deep sleep again. How was the hunt?”

Techno closed the door behind him and rested his axes on the wall beside the door before sitting down at the dining table. “Well, everyone outside the barrier is dead. The eternal frost has completely taken over the city, and as far as I know, everyone is dead. I saw some old newspaper clippings that said something about other countries experiencing the same conditions, but no sign of people or life anywhere. If there is anyone out there, they’re hiding just as well as we are.”

Tommy sighed and sat down in a chair near Techno, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table and his head in his hands as he listened to his other brother speak.

“What’re you thinking, Tommy?” Phil asks his youngest son, knowing by the furrow in his brow and the tension in his posture that he was thinking really hard about something.

“What if we used actual ice? We take one of our pigs and freeze it with Techno’s powers to try and create the heart of an ice magic user. Pig heart valves are often used in human heart surgery, and a pig’s heart matches a human’s heart the closest out of every other animal.”

Techno and Phil think about it for a second.

That’s not a bad idea, actually.

“Your medical degree came in handy for once,” Techno joked, standing up and walking towards the basement where the family cauldron was set up.

The next time Wilbur wakes up, he feels different. A good kind of different. He doesn’t feel like he’s on the verge of a transformation or possession. He still has the urge to kill Tommy, but that’s probably just a sibling kind of thing more than a him kind of thing.

Nevertheless, he greets his family with a smile and warm hugs, hoping that he doesn’t have to worry about killing them anytime soon - or ever, for that matter.
