Work Text:
Hummer wakes up sitting down, leaning against the wall of his library.
The last thing he remembered was looking at Wifies while he looked around the ocean as they both awaited Levi at the bottom of the ocean of an unfamiliar server. Staring at Wifies while his casing filled with water, wiring getting waterlogged and insulation steadily being ruined. Then it all went dark just as his hearts dropped to zero.
Hummer had failed Levi, but how? He had devoted so much time… so much energy, how did he fail?
Oh, Hummer remembers it now like a splash of cold water. The water breathing potion, Hummer had thought he put it with the explosives, but apparently not.
How had he failed his god? Didn’t Levi know by now that Hummer was His? Did Levi think Hummer was doubting Him? How could he? How could Humme make Levi think he didn’t believe? How could he fail his god?
“…Hummer? Are you awake?” Wifies?
In his spiral, Hummer hadn’t noticed his screen had come back online, colors flashing into view before his friend. Wifies sat in front of him, mechanic tools in hand, fingers stained with dried oil and scattered cuts, eyes shadowed by deep eyebags and a lingering sense of exhaustion and dread in purple eyes.
Wifies looked exhausted, what happened?
“Ugh.. what.. what happened? Wifies?” Hummers voice box crackles with disuse, he can feel it’s cleaner than when he last was online, did he break underwater? Did… did Wifies repair him..? Wow
“Uhm… first of all, you were… you were right, Levi is real.” Wifies believed? Really? Hummer is almost at a loss for words, his friend has finally joined him.
“I— I don’t know why you weren’t with me, but… I got transported to this— palace, it was white and gold with trees that looked like they were made of metal. I… I traveled along this path that took my up a mountain into the palace. Inside was a chest, and inside that was…” Wifies trails off, his face looked haunted.
“…was a heart of the sea, I passed out after that and woke up on the beach in your server, you were a few paces behind me.” In the water? That explains the lingering smell of wet fabric coming from himself.
A heart of the sea… was that Levi? Did he really show himself to Wifies? And not him? Hummer is kind of jealous, scratch that, he’s very jealous. But he’s more excited than anything else, this is huge! This is, if anything, the best outcome. Wifies now 100% believes in Levi like himself, but has even seen Levi! This is perfect! Now he won’t leave Hummer, he has to stay now.
“I… I see. Uhm. What.. happened to me? I feel.. cleaner? If that makes sense?” Directing the conversation, Hummer takes stock of his senses. His hearing doesn’t have that slight grainy touch it constantly had. His screen felt cleaner, even his hands felt cleaner. He never could get the oxidation out of the joints, but he felt pretty good. Maybe not brand new, but pretty new… what had Wifies done?
The other investigator looked a bit embarrassed, ducking his head and putting away the tools in a nearby toolbox.
“Wellll.. uhh, you were.. pretty damaged, badly so.. and uh, I have some experience in engineering, and I wanted to help, so… I tried my best. Let me know if I messed anything up, I don’t know if you have like— a system to yourself, so I just tried my best to clean everything up and make sure you weren’t… uh, gone.” Wifies tapered off towards the end, muttering, but Hummer heard just fine.
Wifies… really repaired him, didn’t he? Hummer had never gotten around to explaining to Wifies about his own maintenance, it never crossed his mind, and he always thought he’d be fine on his own… but he wasn’t.
But Wifies did that for him, for no reward, after drowning and seeing Levi for the first time. God, he probably had to drag Hummer hundreds of blocks to the house, and downstairs too if they're in the Library. He… really cared, didn’t he?
It makes Hummer pretty glad he can’t blush, because he'd probably be a bright red right now.
Wifies looks hesitant for a second, before hugging him.
“I’m glad you're ok, you really worried me, you know that?”
“… thank you, Wifies, I’m glad you’re ok, too.”
—
It took a bit of work, but the pair got Hummer up and standing, Wifies hadn’t repaired all of his joints, focusing mostly on his head and arms, as that’s where Hummer had mentioned most of his wiring being.
Wifies, meanwhile, was acting a bit… off. Tired, more like. Which was reasonable, but made Hummer really worried whenever Wifies looked close to passing out while they went upstairs. Hummer subtly lets Wifies lean on him, holding his arm to keep the other steady.
He does end up leaning more heavily against Hummer by the time they make unit upstairs and closer to the bedroom, before Hummer speaks up.
“Wifies… if you’re really tired, you can let me carry you if you want? I’m plenty ok now, you know.” Hummer says, looking at Wifies, whos face is visibly registering his words before he shakes his head.
“Hummer, I’m fine, I promise, just a bit tired is all..” Wifies responds, still leaning against him.
He says that, before wobbling a bit dangerously, footing visibly unstable. Hummer won’t accept this, Wifies saved his life and acted like it was nothing, he’s not gonna let Wifies run himself into the ground. He doesn’t give any warning before grabbing Wifies and picking him up bridal style, the other letting out a noise of surprise.
“Hummer?? What’re you— let me down, what the hell man!!” Wifies shouts, wiggling in Hummers arms while he holds on to the other.
“I’m not gonna let you hit your head because you passed out, ok? You're going to bed, you look like you havnt slept in ages, Wifies.” Hummer retorts, looking down at Wifies. He sees the other open his mouth to argue more, before pausing and giving up. That means a lot from Wifies, the same guy who has argued with Hummer about the weirdest stuff. He must be really tired.
On the way to the rest of the house, Wifies ends up going to sleep in Hummers arms, leaning his head on Hummers shoulder and muttering "You're warm..” Before passing out.
It definitely had zero effects on Hummer. Zero. Nothing. Totally not tinting his screen pink.
Setting Wifies down on the bed, taking time to pull the blankets over the other, Hummer turns to leave. Only to have his wrist grabbed, and Wifies to be looking at him eith the most heartbreaking expression ever.
“Please…please don’t go, Hummer… not yet.” He mutters, and who is Hummer to say no to the man who saved his life? Fake huffing, Hummer lays down next to Wifies, ignoring the… position he’s in. Wifies ends up latching onto him, and Hummer reciprocating.
He’s not in the least tired, but it’s nice… it’s nice to just lay here, with the man he’s been crushing on for so long. Maybe… maybe this is what Levi was planning for, maybe this is why he didn’t get taken to His domain like Wifies was. Levi really knows what he’s doing… he can’t help but be grateful.
As Hummer starts to drift off, he cards his hands through Wifies’ hair. Its soft, and slightly encrusted with salt. Hummer presses his screen to Wifies’ face, a mockery of a kiss, darkening the display to not wake him up.
He really does love Wifies, doesn’t he? Hummer woudnt have it any other way.
“Love you Wifies, goodnight.”
Hummer falls asleep, warm and comfortable with the man he loves.
