Beep
Beep
BEEP BEEP BEEP
A hand slammed down on top of the screaming alarm, a disgruntled “Shut the fuck up.” murmured as the device went silent.
Smitty dragged a hand down his face, shaking his head slightly to try and wake himself up. He stretched and slowly pushed himself out of bed, wincing at the feeling of the cool hardwood floor. His clothes had been set out on his desk for the past few days already, so he simply flipped the polo and black work pants over his shoulder as he walked to the bathroom.
He took a quick shower and haphazardly dried his hair with his towel before throwing on his new work uniform. It was nice to have a uniform that was actually made for him, not one he borrowed. The red logo of the SDN organization embroidered over his heart stood out proudly against the light blue of the polo. Smitty took a deep breath, adjusting his collar so it sat right.
SDN was everything to his family. His parents were both dedicated dispatchers, sending out hero teams that constantly topped leaderboards with their incredible performance. Smitty knew even from when he was a kid that he too would join them. It didn’t take much convincing from his parents to push him toward dispatching.
(Besides, where else would he utilize his powers?)
Smitty took a deep breath, and walked out of his room. The house was eerily quiet for a morning filled with such anticipation for the family. Smitty closed his eyes for a second, the flash of a scene of his parents holding party poppers in their living room coming across his vision. He smiled softly and rolled his eyes as he walked down the stairs. Sure enough, the loud POP of their surprise rang out, confetti streaming down as his Mom beamed, “Exciting day, Smit! You ready for your first day dispatching your own team?”
He nodded, smiling at her as the two enveloped him in a tight hug. His father smiled, patting his back, “We know you’ll do great.”
“I mean, I dispatched your team once, I think I can handle it.” Smitty smirked as he dropped his voice into a teasing tone, “Are they still asking for me back?”
His mother sighed softly, “Yes. They were amazed at how well they did that day. Don’t know how you did it, Smit. They were dispatched almost perfectly to each call that day.”
Smitty shrugged, “I’m just good.”
They laughed, and his father gently nudged Smitty’s side, “We made pancakes for you, they're in the kitchen.”
He perked up, “Really? Did you make them all fluffy too?”
“That’s your favorite, isn’t it?”
“Yes!” Smitty practically ran over to the stack of pancakes on the counter, piling a few onto a plate that had been set out for him. He walked over to the dining table and sat down, his parents following behind with their own plate of pancakes. Breakfast was quick before they collectively put their plates in the sink. Smitty pulled out his phone as he sat in the living room, waiting for his parents to finish their morning routine.

“Smitty!”
He glanced up, watching as his mom gave him a once-over. She reached out, carefully fixing the collar on his uniform before nodding, “Ready?”
“You ask me every time I go in with you guys.”
“Well, no two days are the same while dispatching.”
“I know.”
---.𖥔 ݁ ˖ 𖥔 ˖ ݁ 𖥔.---
Smitty gently shut the car door, glancing up at the SDN building. The chrome walls glittered in the morning light as heroes and dispatchers alike entered the various doors littered around the property. Trees outlined the back of the property as a shield around the building. The SDN building was set in the middle of the city, yet still tried to incorporate nature to boost morale. Even though they were in the middle of the city, they still wanted the heroes to feel like they were safe, hence the thick border of trees.
With the confidence of someone with much more experience, Smitty walked into the building, leaving his parents behind as he went straight to one of the head heroes in the building, a hero named Heat Seeker. She wore a flame-colored jumpsuit with fire patterns all across her arms and legs. She could fly and control fire, an absolutely terrifying mix on the field, but Smitty knew from previous interactions had an absolute heart of gold. She smiled brightly at him as he made his way over to her, “Hey Smitty, ready to meet your team?”
He nodded eagerly, despite having slight nerves. She laughed as she started walking toward a conference room, “You never have been afraid of this stuff, other dispatchers would fear being in a room of superpowered people who have never met them for the first time.”
Smitty glanced at her, “Most dispatchers weren’t working at SDN before they were hired full time.”
“Touché.”
Heat Seeker rested her hand on the door, turning slightly to Smitty as her smile softened, “They’re a little rambunctious, but I feel like they’re a group right up your alley. You’ve got this.”
She pushed the door open, and immediately the cacophony of voices crescendoed and decrescendoed within seconds.
Smitty walked into the crowded room as Heat Seeker gently shut the door behind him, leaving him alone with six others all staring at him.
“Damn this dude looks like an absolute dumbass.”
Smitty’s head snapped over to the voice, and then he rolled his eyes fondly, “Says you, asshole.”
Matt leaned back in his chair, beaming at Smitty while the rest of the team shot confused looks between them, “So this is your new job?”
“Yeah, and I’m the boss of you, so shut it.”
Blarg crossed his arms and huffed, making Smitty giggle. As the rest of the team shot confused looks between them, Smitty clapped his hands together, “Alright then! I’m Smitty, your dispatcher. You go fight, and I’ll help you whenever you’re lost or need assistance. I know it sounds a little scary being a new team with a newer dispatcher, but I promise I will not let you guys down.”
One of the heroes scoffed, his light blue hoodie covering most of his face “Yeah, and how do you know you're good at this? Seeing as how you're a new dispatcher, with no experience.”
Smitty smirked, “Well, I am not a completely new dispatcher, how about you ask the Golden Brigade about how they feel about me.”
The hero sighed, “You’re such a liar.”
“Really?” Smitty tilted his head, beaming as he formulated a plan, “Blarg, can you call me?”
The other nodded, and Smitty walked out the door, accepting the other’s call. He silently made his way over to his mother’s desk, tapping her gently on the shoulder, “Mom, can you tell the team I’m here?”
She gave him a confused look, but when he held up his phone with the faces of his new team on the line, she understood, offering her headset to him, “You can tell them.”
Smitty nodded, adjusting the phone so it could hear the voices of the Golden Brigade heroes through the mic.
“Hey guys, wanted to ask you all about my dispatching abilities, I’m having some doubts about it coming from the new heroes.”
There was an eruption of voices from the line, the heroes of the Golden Brigade eager to recount Smitty’s time as their dispatcher.
“We made the top ten globally that day! Usually we stay in the top 50, but that was incredible!”
“He put two heroes together who are normally so incompatible, but that day was the perfect scenario for them to work together!”
The call flooded with their stories, and he beamed at his mom as she leaned back in her seat, waiting patiently for her headset back.
“Alright, thanks guys! I’ll give you back, good luck out there today!”
He passed the headset back to his mother, and ended the call with Matt. When he got back to the conference room, the mouthy hero was silent, his face turned away. Smitty stood at the head of the conference table, leaning against it as he spoke.
“Now that I’ve shown my resume, I want to know about you guys. Don’t hold back on any information that could be vital to a scenario, especially if you guys have trained together before. Who wants to go first?”
“Oh! I can!” The first hero stood up, his blue-and-green glasses tilting on his face. He wore a grey sweat set with little lightning bolt designs in the same colors as his glasses. “I’m Droid, and I can control electricity and technology! I got to do some hacking practice too, so if you need to hack something, I got you.”
Smitty nodded, “Oh I fucking hate hacking, good to know though.”
The hero paused before continuing, “I can hack, but if I come in contact with a computer virus, sometimes I’ll get sick from it…” he rubbed the back of his neck, grimacing slightly, “It’s not a fun recovery.”
“Good to know, thank you Droid.” Smitty gestured to the next hero in a pink jacket with jeans on, who waited for Droid to sit down before speaking, “I’m Pezzy, and I have superspeed! Pretty basic, but if I try really hard I can make a tornado, it takes time though…”
Pezzy nodded, then glanced at the hero in a teal polo and black pants next to him, “I don't have anything else…”
The other sighed, “I’m Puffer, I have water powers. Breathing, control, whatever you can think of. Although I guess I should mention my issue with Droid…”
Droid stood up abruptly, glaring Puffer down, “We’ve got issues?!”
“I meant when you electrocuted me in training, dumbass. Sit down.” Puffer rolled his eyes, and Droid huffed as he sat down. The others giggled at Droid, who pouted in his chair.
Smitty shook his head, trying to hide the fact he was laughing, “Thank you for letting me know. Is it just because his electricity travels through water?”
Puffer nodded, “Hurt like a bitch.”
The hero across the table from Puffer scoffed, “Well no shit, you got electrocuted.” He wore a simple grey t-shirt and sweatpants, “I’m Grizzy, and I’m a shapeshifter… but like with extra shit. I can also heal and fight with light.”
“Have you blinded anyone?” Droid asked eagerly.
“Once.” Grizzy winced, “I felt bad, but they were fine.”
Smitty glanced over at Blarg, and sighed, “Go ahead.”
“I’m Blarg, and that idiot is my best friend.” He pointed at Smitty and grinned mischeviously, “I can cause explosions and I’m fire resistant.”
“He’s been baby-proofed so he can’t hurt himself with his own powers.” Smitty muttered, earning a round of laughter from the team. Matt gasped, “Hey! I can still hurt myself!”
“Impressive.” Puffer muttered.
The final member of the team leaned forward, pulling his hoodie down as he glared at Smitty, “Kryoz, Ice powers, I don’t like being near the embodiment of firepower.”
“Ice? No shit, never would’ve guessed captain sunshine.” Smitty smirked at the hero, who rolled his eyes.
“Well team, this was a great session. You all ready to hear my voice for hours on end?”
There was a loud groan from the group, led by Matt.
Smitty sighed, “Alright you shits, I’ll head over to my desk, are you all good to go?”
The team responded with a mix of agreement, and Smitty nodded, “Good luck, I’ll be at my desk in a sec. Any questions, not even about dispatching, let me know. I’ve been at SDN for a while, I know quite a bit.”
As the team walked out the door Smitty held open, Kryoz muttered softly under his breath, “Didn’t know dispatching had nepo babies.”
Smitty shot him a confused look, “Yeah, I’m such a nepo baby… for dispatching. Fuck kinda insult is that?”
Kryoz smirked, “Why, would you rather me have said you’re ugly and sound like a whining baby asking for his ass to be absolutely fucked.”
Smitty blinked, then sighed, “Alright, fine, that is worse.”
“Exactly.”
Kryoz walked off with the team, who were already drastically increasing the decibel level of the hallway every word they spoke. They were a good team, all with a range of idiocy, but a very versatile group nonetheless. Smitty sat down at his desk, taking in the gleam of a new computer as he booted up the SDN Dispatching Network. The image of the city and the picture of each of his heroes lit up the screen.
Smitty adjusted the mic and spoke softly as he addressed the group, “Alright team, are we all fitted to the headsets?”
He got back a chorus of yes’s, giving him the signal to continue, “Perfect, so since it's our first day, you guys will likely get a lot of low level stuff. Nothing too crazy. Sometimes, it won’t even be a mission. One of the Golden Brigade was called to help someone bedazzle their car once because they could reach the top by flying. So don’t expect any fights today, boring, I know.”
Smitty scanned the map, waiting for a low-level alert to pop up. A flash of a little exclamation symbol popped up, and he clicked on it.
“SDN, I lost my dog, do you think someone could help me find him? His name is Mutiny, I’ll send a picture.”
Smitty closed his eyes, letting the vision take over as he saw a flash of pink appear standing next to a little black-and-white chihuahua. He opened his eyes once again, “Pezzy, you good with dogs?”
“Yeah! I love dogs!” Pezzy sounded genuinely excited as Smitty assigned him to the caller, “Alright, you’re looking for Mutiny.”
Pezzy cooed over the call, “He’s so cute!”
Smitty watched the hero's avatar race through the city on his way to the caller, likely following the GPS system on the watches SDN heroes got.
Another notification popped up, the caller’s voice coming through the speakers at a deafening volume, “Ice Cream shop lost power! Help!”
Smitty didn’t even need a vision for this call, “Kryoz and Droid, ice cream shop lost power, are you guys good to go?”
Both were silent for a moment before Kryoz responded in a monotone voice, “Do we get ice cream after?”
Smitty hummed, “You can ask them.”
“Nice.”
Their avatars started moving slowly toward the shop, leaving three heroes left at SDN. Smitty found another mission pretty quick.
“Hey, we need someone to lifeguard really quick, our lifeguard hasn’t had breakfast yet…”
“Puffer, are you CPR certified?”
“Yup!”
“Perfect.” Smitty sent him off on the mission, hearing a soft ping a few moments after.
“I found Mutiny! He was in an alley…” Pezzy paused, “His owner said he gets lost pretty often, so we might have to find him again.”
Smitty sighed, “Tell them to get a tracker for the little guy. Or an electric fence.”
“I did… they said that was inhumane.”
The dispatcher sighed, “Welp. Pezzy you might be the first pick on Mutiny calls from now on.”
“That’s fine, he’s a cutie!” Pezzy called back, the rustling of wind nearly drowning his voice out.
Another call pinged, “Hey, could we get some heroes for this career day? None of the better teams could cover.”
Smitty winced, but obliged, “Blarg, Grizzy, you okay handing out a bunch of pamphlets?”
“Smittyyy, why would you give us a boring job?” Matt whined, like the petulant little fuck he is.
“It’s the most recent one, sorry guys, you’re the sacrifices.”
Their avatars appeared outside the building, just as Pezzy returned.
The rest of the morning went by fast, and when their team was off for lunch, Smitty practically ran to the break room. He was absolutely starving, and his mom usually would go out and get food, since her team always got off earlier than his. He opened the fridge to see a container with his name written on it in Sharpie. It was some type of pasta, but honestly, he was too hungry to care what it was.
Slowly after he shoved his food in the microwave, the rest of his team came in. Blarg plopped down next to the spot Smitty left his phone, grinning wildly as Smitty walked over to him, food in hand.
“Dude, is this why you’re so bossy whenever we play CS together?”
Smitty rolled his eyes, “I’m not that bad-”
Puffer sat down next to Blarg, shaking his head, “I think we’ll be the judge of that. You two play CS?”
Blarg nodded eagerly, “Hell yeah we do, you play?”
“Yeah, I usually play with Grizzy.”
“Yeah, he sucks.” Grizzy said as he sat next to Puffer, pulling out a box and fries, and placed it in front of Puffer. He then pulled out his own food, and muttered, “You owe me.”
Puffer glared at him, “I bought you food last week, asshole. We’re even.”
“Fine…”
Pezzy and Droid walked in together, laughing as they sat down next to Grizzy.
“I heard someone mention Mutiny’s name.” Pezzy explained.
“Damn, that little shit got loose already?” Grizzy muttered, shaking his head slowly.
“Yup.”
Smitty looked around the table, a frown forming on his face, “Did Kryoz get lost? Or did you guys abandon him?”
Droid shook his head, “Nah, he just walked outside to go eat. Said he needed ‘peace and quiet from you fucks.’”
The team was silent for a second before Heat Seeker burst into the break room, a big smile on her face.
“Hi team! Just wanted to let you know that you do still have to come up with a team name, figured your lunch was a great time to do it!”
With that, she shut the door behind her, leaving the team to discuss.
“Well it’s gotta be something stupid right?” Droid grinned, “How about Monkey Butts?”
Smitty shot him a disappointed look, “It can be stupid, but it shouldn’t be completely moronic.”
Blarg, who was on his phone, just groaned, “Dude, my friend’s pool got fucking filled with frogs and now thier mom wants to to blow it up. That’s their home!”
Smitty glared at him, taking a second to finish chewing before deadpanning, “They’re dead, Matt.”
Blarg sighed, throwing his phone down on the table, “Whatever, can you repeat the question? I caught none of that.”
The team threw up ideas, but none seemed to fit. Each one was either too serious, or not serious enough. Smitty knew whatever they chose would seem a little silly to his parents, but this group had already proved seriousness wasn’t their style.
Out of nowhere, Droid jumped up, screaming, “Frog House!” After no response, he clarified, “Like the pool!”
Smitty hummed softly, “Frouse could work too, to shorten it or to make it seem more serious.”
“Frouse still sounds dumb compared to the Golden Brigade.” Pezzy mumbled, “Are we going to be taken seriously?”
“With me as your dispatcher? You’re already being taken seriously. Don’t worry, it’s a great team name.”
---.𖥔 ݁ ˖ 𖥔 ˖ ݁ 𖥔.---
“Frog House?!”
Kryoz stood in front of his teammates down in their lounge area, his jaw dropped in disbelief, “You named our superhero team Frog House.”
Blarg smiled at him, “Yeah, maybe if you joined us for lunch instead of hiding like a coward, you would’ve had a say.”
“And this is official?!”
Of course, the annoying dispatcher’s voice came over their headsets, “Yes, Kryoz, but it’s also called Frouse officially. Frog House was too silly, but the higher ups thought Frouse was a good alternative.”
He sighed, “Fine, whatever.”
John had dreamed his whole life of being a hero. Every night he trained his powers, making his ice formations precise. He could make knives within seconds, and even fire off shards of ice at the speed of a bullet. He thought that having such a trained ability would land him a good team, but these imbeciles were anything but that.
Even their dispatcher was a moron, but apparently a moron who made good guesses on who to send out.
While the other heroes yapped, John simply sat in the corner, forming and reforming ice knives in his palm. He got a sideways glance from a few of them as they plotted playing games together to help boost “team morale”, like sessions on CS would help them at all.
“Alright, first minor crime of the day guys! Some dude stole a sign from a small business and they’d like it back, Pezzy and Kyroz, you two good to go?”
“Odd fucking combinat-” “I’m aware, thank you, are you going to go or are you going to bitch, Kryoz?” Smitty’s voice was lower than usual, almost like a threat.
The hero scoffed, “Yeah, fine.”
“Fine, what?” The dispatcher’s voice was now lighter, almost teasing. Kryoz resisted the urge to go upstairs and pummel the guy in the face, “Fine, I’ll go.”
“Perfect, good luck!”
Pezzy nodded to Kryoz and ran off in a pink flash. He sighed, forming a pair of roller skates out of ice and following after the other hero.
He hated how confident Smitty was in sending people out together day one like they’ve known each other for years. In training, all of the guys had already become friends. Kyroz had always kept to himself, so being paired with this insane team felt odd. Of course, he’d make do until he could be switched to another team. He had already spoken with Heat Seeker before lunch ended about potentially switching teams, he would just have to wait a few weeks, and then he was away from fucking Frouse.
In the meantime, he’d endure the chaos of this team.
“Kryoz, I’ll chase the kid toward you, you want to talk to him?”
He absolutely did not- “Yeah, good idea Pezzy!”
Yeah well fuck you too Smitty.
“Sure.”
Within seconds, a scrawny ass kid with a large sign dashed around the corner of a building, nearly crashing into Kryoz. Reflexively, he held his hands out, trapping the kid’s legs in ice.
“Why the hell are you stealing this?” Kryoz muttered, taking the sign out of his terrified hands, spinning it around to get a good look at it. It was a pretty sign, decorated with flowers and vines that hung off it.
The kid’s voice was shaky as he muttered, “My girlfriend liked the shop’s logo so I thought I’d give it to her.”
Kryoz shook his head, his mind already forming a detailed plan of how to make a replica of the sign for himself, because it was pretty as hell, “This would be so easy to make with cardboard and some fake flowers.” he paused, “It would’ve been much more personal to her if you used her favorite flowers.”
The kid sighed, “I’m not that artsy though.”
“Use the sign as inspo, you could even make your sign super close to it. For anything you don’t know, I’m sure there’s a tutorial somewhere for you. Of course, when you’re done getting out of jail probably.”
Pezzy swooped in from behind, pinning the kid’s arms behind his back, “Sorry, but rules are rules.”
Kryoz let the ice around the kid dissipate into little snowflakes, muttering, “Think a bit before you do shit next time.”
As Pezzy ran off to the police station with the kid, Kryoz slowly walked back to the shop where the sign was stolen from.
There was a light crackle from his headset, and Smitty’s voice came through, “You did great there, Kryoz.”
He sighed, making sure the dispatcher heard him, “Yeah? Aren’t you just a fucking seer, always thinking he knows the best fucking person.”
“Well, it turned out alright.” Smitty paused, “Do you like art, Kryoz?”
The hero went silent, considering whether or not to tell this idiot about his adoration for any art form that was out there.
“I mean, no fucking shit.”
Smitty groaned, now more exasperated, “You’re so bitchy and defensive about the most harmless questions.”
“Yeah, well I’m not your friend, so I don’t want to tell you.”
“Alright. Be miserable, it’s your choice.”
Smitty’s voice clicked off as he likely switched channels. His voice changed slightly when he addressed the whole team together, sounding more upbeat, unlike what Kryoz heard moments before, “Alright Frouse, I think we did pretty good for our first day! I know I talked with Blarg about it, but if you guys are down to play something tonight, I know there were a few games thrown into the mix… meet me in the conference room when you guys get out.”
Just one more “team morale” bullshit thing John was not going to do.
---.𖥔 ݁ ˖ 𖥔 ˖ ݁ 𖥔.---
Smitty waited patiently for his team in the conference room, scrolling mindlessly on his phone. The day had gone perfectly, and Heat Seeker absolutely showered Smitty in praise for his work. She had eagerly lifted him up in the air, her voice bubbling with excitement as she laid out her hopes to have the team on more serious missions within a few days, rather than the weeks a normal newbie team would wait.
His mind occasionally wandered back to Kryoz, the most stubborn, closed-off hero he’d ever met. Apparently the guy was terrifying, just sitting in corners brandishing knives, according to Matt.
“He just stares at us, and I mean, we invited him over, but it seems like he fucking hates us all.”
It was certainly odd, but the weirdest thing was Smitty couldn’t get any visions on how Kryoz would warm up to the team. He tried, but he assumed it either wasn’t a possible outcome, or the solution was too far in the future. He had no clue how his predictions worked, but he couldn’t go ask someone, that would risk his entire dispatching career. Anyone with powers was destined to be a hero, and Smitty didn’t want to disappoint his parents by admitting he had powers.
So, when the day came around for power analysis to roll around in schools, Smitty skipped, and never got dragged back to test again. He always knew when they were going to come, and he skipped every time.
He was snapped out of his thoughts when Matt slammed the door open, a goofy grin on his face as he plopped down in the chair next to Smitty.
“The others will be here soon, they were switching out their work hoodies for their personal hoodies.”
Smitty rolled his eyes. Most heroes got the choice of the classic skin-tight suits, or comfy clothes. It seems this whole team chose their comfy clothes. Not great for identification, but it was a lot easier to move in than the suits.
Matt stared at Smitty’s phone over his shoulder, giggling at the videos he saw. It wasn’t the first time the two had done this, and certainly wouldn’t be the last.
After a few minutes of scrolling, the rest of the team came into the room, surprisingly, with Kryoz behind them.
“I was forced,” Kryoz muttered, his eyes not quite meeting everyone’s gazes. Without his hoodie covering his face, Smitty had to admit the guy had an insane sense of style with his embroidered jeans and floral top absolutely drowned in accessories.
Puffer glared at him, “You should be here, we should be a team.”
“Whatever.”
Smitty waited for everyone to sit down before speaking, “So, you guys did amazing today. Heat Seeker was very impressed. She wants this team on actual missions as soon as possible. No other newbie team will get this offer.”
Who else but the most negative superhero Smitty has ever met to be salty about that information, “Is it because of you, Smitty?”
He wanted to reach across the table and strangle this guy, but he couldn’t (legally) so he smiled brightly, “Partially because of me, but you guys do the work out there. She sees potential in this team. That’s huge.”
While the other guys cheered and celebrated the news, Kryoz looked even more distraught than when he came in.
“That’s all, now Matt, you wanted to try and play something tonight?”
“Yeah! The guys gave me their accounts, I’ll send invites to everyone!”
Smitty sighed, “Should we trust you with planning?”
Matt paused, then looked down, “...No.”
“I got it.” Puffer handed his phone over to Smitty, “Add yourself on my account, I have everybody added too.”
Smitty turned to Kryoz, giving him a skeptical look, “Are you joining us?”
“Not tonight. They said I might want to though so I got tackled for my account.”
Grizzy and Matt looked away sheepishly.
Smitty shook his head and put on the best smile he could, (even though he was going to yell at them later), “Alright, good work guys, I’ll see you all tomorrow!”
---.𖥔 ݁ ˖ 𖥔 ˖ ݁ 𖥔.---
“Is Matt coming?!” Smitty leaned back in his chair, sending yet another message to his moronic friend about getting online.
“We might have to do this without him…” Droid mumbled.
The team had been waiting to play Party Animals for at least 10 minutes. Alas, Matt was nowhere to be found.
“Alright, start the game.”
As the loading screen popped up, a ping let out from their newly created Discord server.
“I’m here!”
“Fucking finally.”
“You’re late!”
“Too late!”
“Well sorry my ass was tired!”
“We’re all tired!” Grizzy yelled back, “But we were on time!”
“Fuck off and play the game you dogshit… dog.”
The team erupted into laughter as they began their game, jokes and insults flying as they slowly grew closer and closer with every whack to the forehead with a shovel.
