Rummaging at the bottom of the backpack for Illya’s t-shirt, his fingers touched something small and metallic. He pulled it out and stared at it for a moment. It was the medal that Illya always wore around his neck. Checking again in the bag, he found something else…Illya’s ring. Napoleon took the medal and carefully placed it around his partner’s neck. It was light enough in weight that he didn’t think that it would irritate the sunburn, but would remove it later if Illya objected. The ring would have to wait, as his friend’s hands were swollen and too red with sunburn. He looked at the medal, now gleaming on his partner’s chest in the evening sun. It all suddenly became too much for him. His own exhaustion and pain, as well as seeing Illya in so much distress, so vulnerable, so weak and fragile. Had he actually found Illya in time, or would his partner end up succumbing to his injuries by morning? He sat back against the rock, and taking Illya’s hand in his, Napoleon wept.
