Chapter 1: Lights

Chapter Text

The white lights flickered above. Scientists spoke all around, and in the middle lay a girl. She barely showed signs of life, what betrayed her was the slight trembling of her hands.

The girl kept her eyes on the lights above her. The bags under her eyes spoiling her tiredness.

Someone approached her, a moment later she felt pain all across her body, a scream ripped out of her throat, the girl hurled upwards, but the binds on her arms and legs made it impossible to move. Her cries were in vain.

The world around her was blurry.

And so was every other day in this facility.

She was here ever since she could remember... Every morning she'd wake up in a plain white room, go to get tested on and used.

The doctors never decided how to speak of her. Sometimes she'd be just a useless experiment anyone else could be. Another day she'd be the future of... Whatever they were doing...

...

One day it had to stop, and that day was coming, soon.

She felt her body changing. She heard them describing it as a "miracle". Something never met before. It didn't feel like that at all to her, though.

She felt pain, every single day. Cried, screamed. They only watched. Continued, even when she begged them to stop.

And she hated them, she hated everyone here. She hated this place, the people, the experiments, the lights above her, the bed she was bound to...

–"somehow, subject's 100 body has accepted the myriapoda DNA. She's slowly evolving into something above a human."

–"should we let it continue in it's pace or do we-"

–"we fasten the process. There's no time to lose."

–"yes sir."

...

It was chaotic. They acted nice today. Something was off, they were planning something, she didn't like that...

A woman she's never seen before guided her with a gentle grip and a soft smile on her face... She led her into one of those weird tubes. There was water inside... They put some sort of helmet for breathing on her and... The girl Entered it.

This time... It actually felt nice? Her body relaxed and the girl... Ekato dozed off.

...

Cold. It was cold. And she felt pain, again.

Before opening her eyes, she expected the white lights again, the scientists walking all around, talking about her while she can hear. But instead she saw the floor.

And red liquid everywhere. A copper smell.

Ekato took a shaky breath and lifted herself up, weakly. Her arms were cut by the glass. The tube behind her was broken, and the people... They were on the ground.

The girl almost slipped as she stood up. It was terrifying. She felt scared.

But also... She felt a weird tinge of satisfaction. And hunger.

So much hunger. She was starving. And the body before her seemed to interest her at the moment...

...

———

Ekato finally found the exit. Her while hospital robe was now red. But she didn't care, all she cared about was the fresh air and the sun...

It was beautiful... The sky was vast, blue, so vibrant, so lively. It's like for the first time since she was born, she felt alive.

And Ekato couldn't stop it. She started laughing, crying.

She was finally free.
