The Third Brother

Summary:

The Sparda twins had an older brother. To bad they all assumed each other dead after the fire. Or they did until the eldest was shown a video of the youngest playing with a licker like it's a cat.

OR

Leon as the eldest brother to the twins

Notes:

Shout out to the GOAT!!! Chysgoda, (tumblr), they pitched me an Idea so good we've not stopped yapping about it since. Now you're getting three chapters that fit into the pieces and snippets I've seen of what they are writing.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Hunnigan appeared at his desk one day excited to show him a video that she found. It was of a man with snow white hair and a red jacket playing around with a licker like it was a cat.

Leon had frozen to the spot, his eyes wide in disbelief. He couldn't even figure out what emotion he was feeling as jumbled as it all was. He'd thought Dante had been dead but if he wasn't? Did that mean Vergil was alive too? Fuck he'd had no idea his little brothers…shit oh God they'd been alone. Had they had each other he hoped they did.

He was spiraling he knew that, but it didn't mean he could stop. He was barely looking at the video as his mind whirled. Hunnigan had realized quickly and suddenly her attention was on him.

“What's going on?”

“Nothing.”

“Bull, is it that guy? Do you know him?”

A bloodhound that woman.

“Don't know what you're talking about.”

It was very out of character for him to lie to her, to deny the truth that she obviously knows. But if either or both the twins were alive he couldn't draw attention to them. Not when he didn't know what was out there. Mundus had already taken so much and if he was still out there…

No it wasn't a chance he could take at all.

Hunnigan didn't push but from the look she shot him alone he knew it wasn't over. He just had to hope she wouldn't do anything too drastic.

In the end he sniffed them out himself. Sure enough Dante was alive and well as was Vergil. In Capulet the city over from Raccoon ironically… God the universe really had one hell of a sense of humor.

In the end it had been a mess with lots of tears and choice words, but hell what was family if not that? He'd been all but held captive for two days as he was caught up to date with everything. He had a feeling he wasn't told everything but he was too preoccupied to push.

Vergil having a son had been perhaps the biggest surprise and they promised to introduce him later. In return he explained his side and everything he had gone through. In the end he'd barely been able to tear himself away from the shop. After all he'd just gotten them back and the idea of leaving hurt more than many injuries he's sustained over the years.

Alas he had a job and life. In the end Dante had given him the shop's number on account of neither of the twins having a phone. Leon was pissed about that, but that was an argument for another day.

And as it turned out Hunnigan was a hell of a snoop. Not that it was news to anyone least of all him, but in the end she had dropped a brick worth of paper on his desk three days after he returned.

“So when were you going to tell me your father was a mythological being?”

He'd silently thanked the fact that she locked the door to his office when she walked in, smart woman she was.

“To be fair you didn't ask.”

He watched her eye twitch. “Oh?”

“What do you want me to say Ingrid!? That Mundus took my family away and I didn't know if he was alive or dead? Do you want to hear that I was hoping that possibly maybe the twins were alive, but that I was scared to look because what if I got them killed?

A harsh breath as he got up and started to pace.

“What about the fact I have nothing left of my family unlike the twins and it eats me alive? That I'm half demon but my powers are so minimal from me taking after my mother that there's practically no difference between me and a human!?”

He didn't mean to snap but his emotions had been so high since being shown the footage of Dante a week and a half ago. Despite it he immediately felt regret because Hunnigan didn't deserve his anger.

After all they were best friends, it's understandable she'd be a bit perturbed that he was keeping something so big from her. But it wasn't like he'd told anyone else.

He slumped against the wall refusing to look at her.

But Hunnigan, once again proving why she was his best friend, put a hand on his shoulder. “You've seen them, that's why you were gone for two days.” It wasn't a question.

“I'm an uncle. Hell the kid has kids and I've not yet met him or his family.” A breath, then because it's what had really been eating him alive. “What the hell do I tell everyone else?”

Hunnigan hummed as she thought it over. “Don't think there's any other way than to simply do it.”

He hated her for making it sound simple.

“I've been lying to everyone. Ada will probably freak.”

“I'd be surprised if she didn't suspect something.”

A fair point he knew he healed a touch too quickly and it was absolutely something that Ada would notice.

“This isn't some small thing.” He grumbled.

Hunnigan just shrugged. “Well I'm sure she knows about demons. That's half the battle there, just introduce her, simple. Then I expect a similar introduction, I've done my research and Dante seems like someone I want to talk to.”

Leon groaned. “Maybe it's better if I keep you all separated.”

Hunnigan snorted. “Too late either introduce me or I'll introduce myself.”

With that she was out the door.

He'd followed her advice and as soon as Ada popped back into his apartment he'd sat her down. She'd immediately been suspicious which was fair enough.

“Are you going to explain why you disappeared for two days and have been off for over a week?”

“I'm going to try.”

“Well I'll have you know I looked into the place you stayed at and I have some questions.”

He snorted. “Well you're about to have a lot more.”

She gestured for him to continue.

“I was the oldest of three, and I thought the twins died in the fire just like mom. Turns out that wasn't the case.”

Ada blinked hard and he was almost proud to say that he finally got one over on her, that for once she proved not to be omniscient.

“How much do you know about demons?”

She thought it over for a moment before shrugging. “Not as much as I'd like but I know they exist and I've run into a few before.”

“What do you know about Sparda?”

“The basics everyone does. Sealed off the demon world and saved humanity.”

“Well there's more to that story. He stayed in the human world and fell in love. I'm one of his sons.”

Ada squinted at him and Leon wished the floor would open up and swallow him whole. But he continued on because if he didn't he'd never get it all out.

“He raised us until he disappeared and to this day no one knows what happened to him. Either way Mundus wanted revenge, and he got it. He sent demons and attempted to kill all of us. He only got mom as it turns out because the other two are alive and well.”

He's pacing again and he really needs to stop doing that.

“I thought…I looked for them after but I couldn't find them and believe me I looked. Foster care grabbed me however and after that it was a wash. Later I was too afraid to go looking. I didn't want to draw attention if they did happen to be alive. I couldn't be the reason my baby brothers were killed.”

Then quieter he added on. “I take after Eva unlike the twins. I may be half demon but I have no real powers to speak of. Hunnigan said that you'd probably parse out the faster healing, but that's not the inhuman strength that Dante and Vergil have.”

He let out a sigh and finally looked at her again. Her expression was unreadable but he took solace in the fact there was no anger, that's not something she would bother to hide.

“I have no proof, hell demons don't even recognize me as anything other than human. So what's the point of being anything but? I'd sound insane to anyone else. I know I sound insane now!”

He collapsed back onto the couch finally and he's never felt more tired in his life.

“I found them I can prove this to you, I just…my whole life got turned upside down. I'm terrified of your reaction and the prospect of having to tell the others.”

“That's quite the tale Leon.” She pointed out blandly.

He chuckles outright at that and hopes it doesn't sound as hysterical as it does to his own ears.

“But I'm willing to hear you out. You're right about the healing. It's weird, but well we've been around so many bio weapons I'm willing to write it off as a side effect. But you've set lofty expectations, and I expect them to be met.”

“I can do that. How about this weekend? I can take you to the shop to meet them.”

“Deal.”

And sure enough on Saturday after a call and a short conversation there was no better way to start than simply getting thrown in the deep end. He stood in the living room, Ada at his side when the portal opened.

Ada took a step back but Leon put a hand on her shoulder.

“It's fine just Vergil, we simply walk through.”

Ada didn't seem thrilled with the idea but trusted him enough to listen even if she had a death grip on his hand. It was cold and it felt like the air was sucked from his lungs but it only lasted a second. The vertigo hit once feet landed on the other side.

It's still ranked way up there in ways to travel from one place to another. He could think of at least ten worse ways off the top of his head that he'd personally experienced. Ada seemed to be of a similar mindset because she'd let go of his hand as soon as her feet touched real tangible ground once more.

Then she blinked confused as she took in the shop. However her eyes immediately got drawn back to the man who'd instantly draped himself across Leon.

“Big bro your back!”

Leon grunted at the sudden weight and strong grip, but he couldn't help his own goofy smile that was nearly identical to the one Dante wore.

Ada blinked wide eyes at him and Leon couldn't help but laugh.

“Dante, it's been a week.” He grumbled, but his heart wasn't in it.

“So? Also you must be Ada!”

Dante offered out a hand from his place still draped across Leon.

Ada opened and closed her mouth a few times trying and failing to find words. Again Leon took the chance to soak it in. Her reaction was fair enough Dante was taller than Chris and just as big. It put him quite a few inches over Leon and quite a few more over her.

It also didn't help that he had the attitude of an excited puppy.

“I..”

“Dante.” A sharp voice cut through the chaos.

Dante rolled his eyes, his hand dropping as he turned to glare at his twin.

“Don't start Verge, not my fault that the stick up your ass is keeping you from getting excited.”

“Well not all of us are behaving like a toddler.”

Ada’s eyes somehow got slightly wider as she saw Vergil looming a few feet away. Leon for his part just chuckled. Vergil met his eyes then and Leon saw the warmth buried there.

“Told you I'd be back. This is Ada, my wife. Ada these are the twins Dante and Vergil.”

Vergil nodded curtly at her while Dante finally peeled himself off of Leon to stand beside him and offer out his hand once more. This time Ada took it and somehow his smile got even wider.

Leon couldn't help but imagine a samoyed and a black cat. The thought had him snickering.

“I was told you were both much more demonic than Leon. You look pretty human to me.” Ada finally spoke, and it was as succinct into the point as Leon would expect.

Vergil scoffed but Dante just shrugged. “Most people are already unsettled by the general aura.”

“Call me a skeptic then, I've been around all types of unsavory, and I've seen demons. You two don't seem...” She gestured vaguely at them.

Without any prompting a blue spectral sword impales Dante through the shoulder. He yelps before a low growl escapes him, then he's lunging at his twin. His own sword appeared in his hand in a flash of sparks.

Ada just blinks several times and Leon groans into his hands. “They really haven't changed at all.”

Vergil simply disappears leaving Dante to skid on the now empty spot and turn. The older twin appeared at the top of the stairs landing that overlooked the office.

“Can you two not fight right now? Please.”

Dante just pulled out his guns and Leon deflated.

But right before an all-out war could start the door to the shop burst open and in walked who could only be Nero. The young man blinked at Leon and Ada confused before locking onto the twins and sighing.

A second later blue spectral wings appeared and Dante was yanked back and up into the air.

“Cut it the fuck out, you have guests!”

Dante pouted but dutifully lowered his guns looking all the world like a kitten who'd gotten scruffed. But only a moment later Dante perked right back up.

“Nero guess we should introduce you too. That's Leon your other uncle and his wife.”

Nero paused, looked back over to Leon and Ada before looking up at Vergil. “Do you guys ever tell me shit?!”

“Wait you didn't tell him?” Leon asked surprised.

Nero throws more than drops Dante down before turning on Leon, the wings dissipating.

“Why don't you have the white hair? Also you don't feel like anything.”

Leon shrugged. “Took after Eva I'm barely more than a human.”

Nero frowned at that, then seemingly without prompting asked. “Have you ever been stabbed in the chest?”

Dante and Vergil both made a noise from their positions as if that was something important they hadn't considered before.

“I…no?”

“Well that might be it, my powers were only really awakened after I was.”

“Mine too.” Dante offered.

Vergil  hummed his own agreement.

“No one is stabbing my husband.” Ada butted in firmly.

Leon pointed a thumb at her. “I agree I don't want to get stabbed.”

Nero squinted at him. “You seem normal, it's weird.”

Ada chuckled. “You know I think that's the first time anyone's ever called you that.”

He just sighed. “Well, you believe me now?” He asked in instead of commenting on what she said.

Ada glanced around the room and nodded. “It would be stupid not to, but I have lots of questions.”

Nero turned to her. “Wait, you didn't know about the demon thing? Does anyone in this fucking family explain anything important?”

“I think some explanations would do us all good.” Leon cut in in lieu of his own defense.
