Work Text:
It felt like there were less stars around the house than usual — or atleast that's what Isaac thought.
He was drowsy, but he could be found anywhere but his bed, which could be found impressive given there's not a lot of room in this house; a lack of variety in ways the creeper-head could fill the space. He's not trying to avoid Riley, of course — but as the other man in the house lies down on the bed, he'd rather not share it on any other occasion than bedtime, it gets uncomfortable.
"The roof," the mooshroom-head started.
"What?"
"I wanna head to the roof!" Riley raised his voice, arguably too early. The red man sits up from the bed.
Oh, are they doing a scene? Isaac wasn't prepared, he clears his throat for a quick second, starting immediately.
"Then, then go..?" He still hasn't gotten used to being put on the spot so suddenly. At the very least, playing the more laid-back and downturned role between the two of them means he can save his energy. "You don't need to tell me everything."
"I do... because you're coming with me."
"I'd rather just take the bed after you get off."
"Oh come on, don't start this again!" Riley swings his legs over to plant them on the floor. The creeper-head wouldn't mind stargazing on the roof actually, but he wants to make the other work for it.
The red man animates himself more while playing out a scene. It came to Isaac's shock actually — when they first started on scenarios. The house gets cold really easily, floating around in this space hell, they live off the lanterns which seem to burn eternally and not give them carbon monoxide poisoning. Theres a sort of warmth that comes off of Riley whenever they act. Perhaps Isaac should try playing the energetic one sometime.
The situation they're both in is absurd, and the reaction and the course of action they take adds onto that absurdity. He wouldn't hope that Riley gets deterred away from their riffs, he's just as passionate about this as he is — and it has kept him from going mental from time to time.
"Do you realize how hard it is to get just one of us up there?" The green man's body felt heavy today, trying to do anything — even if it isn't for a scene, was going to be more difficult. "Let alone the both of us."
"You underestimate my strength then; I literally pull you out of bed like all the time."
"You're impossible to underestimate, I've tried."
"I'm going to get you off that chair." Isaac turned to find the mooshroom-head rising from the bed.
"Fine! Fine whatever, just don't pull on my head again."
"You come around, like always." He heard a chuckle.
"Fuck you."
Riley felt the pressure in his shoulders, using all his strength into straightening his back, his knees tense tense as he uses his legs to push the load upward. Neither of them excelled in physical strength, they learnt the hard way.
"You're going to drop me, you dipshit!"
"I'm not, jesus — have some faith!" They had a talk about what they think would happen if they fell into the void of space, it did unsettle the mooshroom-head a little, but they're running with the idea that they would just be sent back to the house. He doesn't think anything would let them escape that easily.
This hell breaks the rules of space as it shows, they literally have the gravity to be staying on the floor. If not, Isaac would've already been up on the roof right now.
Speaking of the creeper-head, currently — his hands found a grip on the ledge of the roof, in an attempt to push himself upward. Sitting on Riley's shoulders, he finds his legs bound under the grip of the red man's arms.
"Let go of my legs," The delivery sort of slips his character. Well, sorry that he can't stay in scene while he's getting boosted upward to the roof with his roommate's mediocre technique.
The mooshroom-head watches after loosening his grip on Isaac. He watches him plant a foot on the roof, and then the other, before sitting on the slant. The green man drops his shoulders again, his chest working as he breaths heavily. His eyes quickly glance forward at the white glitter of space, before looking downward to find Riley still waiting for his turn.
"Jesus Christ — okay," The creeper-head hitches out.
As the green individual reached out his hand below, Riley moved to stand on the fence. They grabbed eachother by the forearm. Riley felt his feet leave the support of the fence, moving upward, looking downwards to find himself starting to dangle.
The red man looked up; a tense look on Isaac's face. He feels the grip on his arm tighten, and hears the grunts of struggle and the evidence of work, but he's hardly moved upwards since the initial force.
"Stop, wait — let me charge upwards," The mooshroom-head says, as Isaac lowers him down to the fence again. The fence wobbles when he puts the pressure of his weight on it, he almost loses balance. He returns to the ground for now.
"I'm going to jump upwards from the fence, then you pull me up."
"Fuck, wait," The creeper-head catches his breath, lying on his stomach on the roof's edge. "Let me take a break first."
Reluctant as he was, there's really no rush. Riley sighed before coming to take a seat at the edge of the porch, his legs dangling into the blank ink that swallowed everything. The whole idea of catching your breath while you're in here is a ridiculous one, they don't even know if they're actually breathing air while they're here, or if their bodies are just really good at deceiving themselves.
They haven't really payed thought to how the place really worked. For Riley, he avoids this curiosity like a plague, he knows he'll be greatly disappointed — and worse, he'll develop the will to escape.
"...can we move now?"
"You haven't even let me rest my arms yet..!" Isaac looked up from the wood he buried his face in.
"It's felt like hours already!"
"You're impatient."
"And you're weak, what's your point.?"
"Just come here." The red individual moved, standing up and preparing to climb the fence first.
He took a brief glance upward to find the creeper-head already reaching out his arms, with a look of waiting. In one quick motion he jumped, pushing himself from the floor first, and then from the fence. He raised his arms, where his hands found Isaac's shoulders, while Isaac's grip landed on his upper waist.
The upward momentum was just enough to support the elevation the green man manifested through the force of his arms. Their breaths hitched, and the tip of Riley's shoe was able to step onto the ledge. One more motion that involved Riley pushing forward and away from the ledge, which landed him onto the slanted roof, with an unlucky roommate to be used as a landing pad.
"Ow!" Isaac let out, his limbs jerking under the restraint of the mooshroom-head ontop of him.
"Sorry! Sorry..." The red individual rolled off immediately.
The scene that unfolded infront of the creeper-head threatened to keep his eyes for as long as they wished. The nebula they were passing by would be a sight they're privileged to see for atleast a few days, which should hopefully keep them entertained for just enough time. The spacemark involved glitter and dust in hues of blue, purple and orange — with a large spot of light around its center area.
"...This is pointless," Isaac remarks. He's unsure of if he should really stay in character, and continue on riffing at a moment like this.
"Oh c'mon don't say that! It's so pretty up here..." He looked over at the man speaking, the nebula and his spark comes to reflect the way his eyes light up.
The creeper-head hummed in response.
"Oh, we can also access the fridge up here if we need to right now," Riley added.
"That's one good thing, I guess."
"Don't 'I guess' me! Look around us, it's so cool!"
The green individual — overtaken by instinct, looked around to gaze not just at the nebula, but a few other dots; the brightest stars taking his attention. The sight threatens to overwhelm him, he wouldn't think he'd be one to have megalophobia, but if the space around wasn't so unbelievably infinte, vast, and empty, he wouldn't be curling his fingers on the wood.
When looked up in the regular world, it stood the certainty that you'd find clouds, soft in appearance. Here, he'd have to look at each and every single body, and think of how far they've come. Getting lost in space is a death wish, and he's practically living an afterlife of it.
"How many do you think are there?"
"Stars? Like billions — dude how am I supposed to know?"
"You have to admit they all look really pretty though."
Isaac felt his resolve to say something snarky crumble at that statement. "I... I mean yeah, I guess."
"I told you so!"
"Okay then, you won't be saying that when we try to get down from here."
"Worry about that later!" The mooshroom-head paused. In the corner of his eye, the green man saw he was scanning the sight infront of them. His eye lids fluttered shut again, and he was only brought back when Riley spoke.
"That's a pretty bright star."
"Just that one star?"
"No genius," The red individual stated. "I'm gonna make a constellation out of the ones beside it."
This time, Isaac's sights weren't on the clusters of dots, but the man beside him. Initially, he watched as he raised his hand, pointed at the star, and moved his finger along as if he had an invisible crayon, but then he looked back into the night just to see what if he could see what the other was pointing at.
"I always found constellations kinda stupid," The mooshroom-head spoke again. "...like you could somehow come to the conclusion that a random group of stars you linked together is like, a horse — or something."
"Pretty much."
"You agreeing with me or?"
"You make me not want to."
Riley tilted his head. "I'm making a good point though, right?"
"Psshh. Yeah, surprisingly."
The creeper-head had turned his head away, not coming to meet Riley face-to-face. Soon after, the both of them looked back at the stars, letting the sounds around them fill the space — alot of space infact, to be filled with only the sound of lantern fire, fridge humming, and slow breathing.
They can't hear anything from the stars, which would've made sense since there shouldn't be any sound in space, but here they are now.
Compared to when they first saw the nebula, hues of pink had bled into the colors. They've considered on giving the nebula a name, but even when they're not doing a scene, they can still argue about things. Isaac's ideas are too boring, and he can't even see the shape that Riley wants to name the nebula after. They've both decided it would be pointless to name something they'll probably never see again.
The red man groaned and the creeper-head caught a glimpse of him spreading out his limbs, as he finally lied down on the roof slant, the tiredness getting to him. Isaac followed suit, coming to rest just beside him.
Nothing but the overwhelming vastness that is space, the green individual was forced to take it all in. The sight was unlike anything he'd ever seen before, and would be impossible under normal circumstances. He didn't know what to think of it, the fact that he'd been given a hell full of color, he could peak through it at the window while he slept on the bed — and the colors would follow him into his head.
"...Time out."
"What's wrong? Is something making you uncomfortable?" Riley turned his head to look at him, his tone coming down to a softer frequency.
"No it's just... this whole stargazing idea was a really good idea actually."
Riley giggled, before speaking again; "I had a feeling you might've been liking it."
