Summary
Texas, 1863.
Nineteen-year-old Dean Winchester is riding south with a rifle at his saddle, a father to find, and no intention of dying for a war he never asked for. He has no cause for the Confederacy, no love for the Union, and little patience for any man who would tell him otherwise.
Then a Confederate deserter crosses his path.
Castiel is a physician who has buried more men than he has years left to live. He is done with the army, done with obedience, and looking for a place where neither his past nor his conscience can follow.
Dean ought to leave him where he found him. Castiel ought to know better than to trust a nineteen-year-old drifter with a quick temper.
But the border country is unforgiving, and two men travelling together have better odds than one. Mile by mile, camp by camp, the distance between them begins to change, and there is no law to answer to but themselves.
