Summary
Ilya blearily glanced at the bland note on their refrigerator as he sluggishly started a pot of coffee. At first, he didn’t understand the written words. His brain was still half asleep.
However, as the grogginess wore away and the words finally made sense, he muttered, “What the hell? He is not on his morning run right now? What fucking retreat? And Shane knows he needs to be back for practice tomorrow. Why didn’t he mention this before? The fuck is he doing?” he kept up his invective stream as he grabbed his phone to reach his wayward husband.

He paused, leaving Ilya speechless with what his best friend just said. Troy finally continued. “So um. Yeah. I tried to apologize to Hollander later at All-Stars, but um. He said that just because I’m gay doesn’t give me a free pass to be racist and misogynistic. And um. He wasn’t going to let me burden him with my white guilt and to fuck off.”
Ilya stared at him, seeing him in a new and unflattering light. “Troy. Did you apologize for the racist slurs too, or only the homophobic ones?”
Troy looked down. “I don’t know? I said I was sorry. That it was because of my own internalized homophobia. Uh. I needed to protect myself from the likes of Dallas Kent, and. Um. Shit. I don’t really remember what I said.”
He shrugged loosely as he looked back up to Ilya. “I mean, I guess it doesn’t matter? I don’t make chirps like that anymore. And he’s going to retire after this season anyway. He was never mean to me during games, so. It’s not really important what he thinks, I guess.”
A little while later, Troy left Ilya’s house.
Sitting on the couch with Anya on his lap, he absentmindedly stroked her back as he thought of the conversation.
Is this why my Shane never liked Troy Barrett? I know he did not. He avoided my best friend when he could. He never willingly hung out with us.
Was Shane’s cold treatment to him justified? I know Barrett. He probably understated how bad he was during his Toronto days. My Shane never got an apology from him for anything.
What I really don’t like? Is that Barrett from the other world never, ever told me about any of this. He kept it a secret from me, probably because he knew I would not have wanted to become friends with him if I knew.
