Work Text:
[Image/Video Description: Light is traveling on a metro reading a book titled "On Grief." A title screen appears saying "Mitski - Francis (Francis is crossed over) Ryuzaki Forever, a lawlight animatic by Chew". The next screen shows Light facing the viewer looking annoyed, his back towards the NPA team post-timeskip as they argue and bicker. A text above Light's head says "I don't know what to do without you" following the lyrics of the song. The next scene shows Light sitting up in bed late at night, looking at his hand, a text saying "I don't know where to put", the next scene is a closeup from Light's perspective on his hand, with visible marks left by the handcuffs, the text saying "my hand". He tries to lie down in bed, and when he does, he starts tearing up and turning to the side when he notices a bright apparition of L next to the bed. He tries to reach for him but L dissolves in the air. Light jolts up from bed, breathing heavily. There's a shot of various certificates and pictures of Light's achievements (university, NPA, etc) on the wall. The view zooms out and Light slowly drags himself across the screen, looking tired. Light pours himself a glass of water from the sink and sits down at the kitchen island to drink it, and then he rests his head in his hand, looking sad and tired. There is a quick blank frame as the second verse starts.
Light can be seen, his eyes shut and he is in a suit and tie, he is walking towards the viewer with a street moving behind him. He approaches what appears to be the gates of a cemetery with tombstones and trees around. There's a shot of all the different gravestones around, and the next shot where L's grave is in the centre, surrounded by two willow trees. The camera returns to Light, he looks up towards the sky clutching a bouquet of flowers. The next shot shows the trees as the sky and sunlight peeks through the leaves and branches and the willow branches sway in the wind. There's a closeup of Light's face as he tears up. He breaks down and throws himself down on his knees in front of L's grave, crying and heaving, the screen filling with his hysterical words "I miss you" "I miss you" repeatedly, along with "I'm so alone", "no one could replace you" etc. He smashes his fists up and down crying. The scene is still filled with "I miss you"s "I didn't mean it"s and other words as he pulls himself closer towards the grave holding onto the gravestone. He seems to collapse in on himself as he finally says, "I don't want to play this game anymore", and then "I love you", the letters of the "I love you" scattering down onto the ground like leaves, until Light is almost in a fetal position against L's grave.
There's a quick transition to the memory of L looking sad and hopeless on the rooftop in the rain, and another transition to Light looking at him on the rooftop, surprised. The camera zooms out and L is looking away towards Tokyo while Light approaches in the rain, some of the Tokyo skyscrapers visible, as the camera floats above them into the grey skies, then the skies and clouds turn bright blue and sunny and the camera floats down again to a scene of L and Light leaning against one another and holding each others hands on the railing of the Kira Taskforce Headquarters' rooftop with handcuffs still on, where they both look happy. The camera closes in on Light's face, looking happy. The scene changes to Light's tired face, his eyes closed against L's grave as he sleeps on it. He slowly wakes, feeling embarrassed as he pulls himself up and looks around to see if i he was seen. He gets up, adjusts his tie, swipes off the dust from his suit and stands in front of the grave. The next shot shows him pulling out a slice of strawberry cake from his bag and placing a plate of it down in front of the grave, after which Light leaves. There's another shot of Light on the metro, reading the same book "On Grief", looking more disheveled and slightly dirty. The final scene once the music quiets is a "Thank you for watching scene" where, back at L's grave, the ghostly apparition of L is sitting cross-legged in front of his gravestone and happily eating his cake.]
