Work Text:
Shifts at The Wall post office, as people were taken to calling it, weren’t too bad. The place was perpetually cold, the pay was barely minimum wage, and it was always either busy beyond reason with the most stressful customers Jon could imagine or so empty it was hard to stay awake, yes, but he liked a lot of his co-workers, it got him out the house, and they always let him bring Ghost, provided the dog stay behind the desk. He could easily have a much worse place to work than this.
Tonight was shaping up to be an archetypical night shift at The Wall. The shop was cold enough that he wondered whether or not the freezers were even necessary for the ice creams nobody ever bought, nobody was walking around in the dark outside, and he was working with Sam, who, as Jon’s best friend, was always good to be with, even on the worst days.
“How long do you think until we get someone?” Jon asked, just to see what Sam would say, knowing it would be the same as every other time he asked on nights like this.
“I don’t think we’ll get anyone. At least, I don’t think we’ll get any until much later on.”
“Hmm.” Jon responded, as he responded every other time as well. “Any plans for passing the time?”
“Jon, you and I both know that we can’t do anything other than wait.”
And as each night shift before it, Jon leans back and groans in boredom and exhaustion.
“We could study!” Sam offered with far more excitement in his tone than that idea warranted in Jon’s eyes.
“Excuse me, did you just suggest that we study?”
“We need something to do that won’t get us in trouble and besides, we have a test this week.”
This time, Jon’s groan is a brand-new one.
