Work Text:
When Chan had left the house with Minho that morning, they’d both been in good moods, teasing about their last working days before a long weekend away from the stress that seemed to live in the hospital.
Despite those good moods that morning, it was clear that something had happened in the first few hours of the day that had left Minho looking annoyed and tense, eyebrows furrowed as he moved around the office, dealing with the paperwork that came with patients.
The answer became available to Chan when Minho passed a chart to Dowon.
"I need you to sign off on your decisions. I'll check the discharge paperwork before signing off and once that's processed, we'll get him to the discharge lounge and we'll have a bed free for the next patient."
Chan could hear Felix tapping away behind him as he watched Dowon roll his eyes.
"I'll get it all signed for the next one." He muttered, clearly not paying too much attention as Minho stepped away before following it with, "Better make sure not to embarrass me in front of the next patient too."
The words weren’t quiet like he’d clearly tried to make them and Chan heard Felix suck in a breath from behind him.
Minho froze.
There was a moment where no one spoke, letting the silence grow loud enough for Dowon to realise that there was a problem. He looked up, and instead of looking contrite, there was something ugly in his expression that told Chan this wasn't the first time he and Minho had butt heads.
"I don't give a shit what letters you have at the end of your name," Minho began firmly, "If you have something to say, you say it to me." You asked for my medical opinion, it is not my fault that you did not like what I recommended." Part of Chan found it hot to watch his husband lay the law down with someone else, but he knew Dowon and knew the stubborn doctor would not take the put down quietly."
"Do your job then, and I won't say anything." Chan pulled in his own sharp breath of shock, stunned.
That line was one exchanged between him and Minho often, banter between them at work, with no vitriol that was a teasing joke over minor mistakes that often had no effect on the outcome.
This wasn’t any form of teasing, instead sharp and nasty, designed to provoke.
Minho sneered.
"You don't feed me, finance me or fuck me. So do not think you can speak to me like that." Chan could feel the eyes of their friends and co-workers, but didn't acknowledge them even though he could feel his own smug satisfaction knowing that he only got away with things because he was good to his husband and both of them knew it.
Dowon scowled.
"You don't get to speak to me like that-"
"You are my coworker, not my superior. Don't forget that. Now if you could continue with the chart so that I can get this patient discharged." Minho cut the man off and Chan forced himself to remain in his seat.
Dowon blustered but scribbled on the notes, thrusting it back at Minho before his eyes landed on Chan, a look of glee entering his features as Minho returned back to his work station where Seungmin gave him a subtle fist bump.
Chan kept his face neutral as Dowon made his way over to him.
"I take it you saw that disrespect Dr Bang?" He heard a hastily covered up giggle behind him and tried not to sigh.
"I certainly heard your disparaging remarks about Minho's medical opinion." He kept his tone dry but even, watching as the man froze.
"But, after? He-"
"He was well within his rights to remind you of your place, Dr Shik. Our team of nurses are second to none and we would be lost without them. And as he so succinctly stated, you are his co-worker, not superior. Now, I believe you have ward rounds in the next ten minutes?"
The door slammed shut and Chan let out a breath of air as Felix finally giggled out loud.
"Really hyung?"
"It's not like we've hidden that we're married. If the idiot man can't put two and two together, then he's not for this hospital." Chan muttered, making Felix laugh once more.
A soft hand touched the back of his neck after some time since the man had left, Chan's eyes scanning over a fractured pelvis that was looking like interventional surgery was going to go ahead that afternoon, pulling his gaze away to see Minho there, expression less pinched.
"Hi yeobo." His murmur was softer than Chan had ever heard at work, but he smiled regardless.
"Hello love, how are you-" Before Chan could finish his sentence, soft lips were on his, catching him off guard as Minho dominated the kiss easily, Chan letting him take charge as he tried not to think about what he was going to do when they got home that night.
"Yah!" Chan wasn't sure what was thrown, but there was a soft thud before Minho pulled away.
"Thank you." Chan's mind was still on how Minho's lips felt, mind jumbled as he tilted his head in confusion at the murmured thanks.
"What for?"
"For letting me fight my own battle but sticking up for me when it mattered." The words were soft and Chan could only give a small but dopey smile in response, heart beating out of his chest.
"You're a grown man, I'm not going to fight your battles unless you ask. Not to mention, you looked hot." There were a few groans as Minho smirked.
"Order Thai in for dinner, I think we deserve a nice night in."
With one more quick kiss, Chan tried to ignore the heated feeling in his gut, letting his mind refocus on the patient's x-rays rather than his husband.
“I think I learned far more than I ever wanted to learn.” Jeongin muttered from the other side of Felix, the blond simply cackling loudly in response as Chan watched Seungmin shove Minho’s shoulder.
“Since you lot were the ones to push us together all those years ago.” Chan shot back playfully, earning a wide smile from Felix, followed by a sheepish one from Jeongin.
Neither secretary looked sorry for their meddling.
Part of him felt incredibly grateful that they were booked off for the weekend now, because he had no intention of putting on a shred of clothing nor letting Minho out of their bed.
