Kris, thanks for waking me home.” Says Susie standing behind the door of the closet. Before she closes the door Kris runs to her and kisses her! Kris standing on their tippy toes steps down from Susie. Susie’s face grows bright red. “Damn it, Kris! Why do you have to make things so complicated!” She slams the closet door closed, Kris stands there staring at the closet door, after a moment they turn around to head somewhere but they stop. They raise their hand and plunge it into their chest! Letting out a scream of immense pain and despair. They rip out a red glowing object, it’s their soul, the very culmination of their being. They fall to the ground dropping the soul, they start coughing heavily. They cough up blood. After a second, the coughing stops and they get up. They grab the soul and leave the school. As they leave, tears start streaming down their face, and their breathing quickens. They start running down the street as fast as possible. Their eyes grow so blurred from tears that- thud! They fall to the ground hitting their head, they lay on the ground for a second before a blue feather lands on their face.
”Watch where you’re going!” You could have~ Berdly picks up his glasses from the concrete and puts them back on. “K- Kris! What are you doing at this hour? If you were coming to study for once in your life your to late. I just got done closing the library for tonight.”
Kris leans up and looks at Berdly. “Kris, are you ok?” Kris hugs Berdly. The tears stream down their face.
”Susie, I, I kissed Susie. She doesn’t love me she she.” Kris hugs Berdly tighter and then lets go and collapses.
”Kris! Kris wake up, your bleeding. Kris!”
”Agh!” Kris jolts awake, around them are Susie Noelle, Berdly, and Temmie? They’re in the classroom. “Awake dumbass? You were asleep all class.” Susie says from behind Kris. “Come on we need to show Noelle her new room!” Susie leaps from her chair and grabs Kris’s hand and books it to Noelle! “Hey Noelle!” Susie drops Kris, and they fall flat on their face. Kris pulls their face off the floor to see Susie and Noelle chatting, they start walking and leave the room. Kris gets up and follows suit. When they reach the hallway they look down the hall to see Susie and Noelle jumping into the closet. The door slammed behind them, Kris runs to the closet and tries to open the door. It’s locked. “Susie can you open the door please…..” No response. “Susie?” They try it again, still won’t budge. “Susie this isn’t funny just open the door already.” Nothing. They grab both handles and pull as hard as they can, but nothing. “Please let me in Susie.” They start to shake the door handles as hard as they can. “Susie, please let me in! Tears fall down their face. Susie!”
”Susie!” Kris jolts up. They look to see a vaguely familiar place around them. It looks like some apartment, in front of them is an arch leading into the kitchen. Someone walks in viewing the kitchen and it’s~
”ah, you're awake.” Berdly walks out of the kitchen to Kris.
He sits down on the ground beside Kris. Before Kris can say anything a nauseating feeling wells up in them. They turn to the right and puke into a trash can.
”My mom told me that would happen so I’m glad I put that there.” Berdly laughs a little.
Kris lies back down. “How did your mom know to do that?” Kris says.
”Oh, she’s a nurse at a hospital in the city. She’s told me a lot of different medical stuff over the years in case she wasn’t here. And I guess it was worth it. Here drink this.” Berdly hands Kris a glass of water.
Kris grabs it but. “Ah!” A sharp pain shoots across their skull. They spill a bit of water on themselves. “Here take this with the water.” Berdly puts his hand out to Kris with two pills in hand. Kris grabs the pills and swallows them with the water.
”What were those pills?” Kris asks Berdly.
”Just some Tylenol for the headaches. Behind you on the side table is a bag of ice if they get worse.”
”Kris stares at the ceiling. So how did you get me here?”
”Oh, I carried you on my back, I tried bringing you to the hospital but both rooms were full so I had to carry you back to my place. It was hard getting up the stairs but I was able to do it. You were bleeding badly for a while but I was able to stop it with some bandages from the hospital.”
Kris looks at Berdly's hands there partially stained red from the blood. “I’m sorry for causing you trouble, I should go now.”
Kris says as they try to get up from the couch. “Wait! If you’re going to walk home at least let me walk you there. I can’t have you collapsing outside with no one there to help.” Berdly says.
”Fine.”
Kris and Berdly both head out of the apartment, berdly helps Kris down the stairs and out the door. Now both outside, Kris looks around, the stars illuminate the sky above, and the apartment buildings they just left. All windows are dark and closed except one. Then suddenly Kris trips! Berdly swoops his wings under them and catches them. “Gotcha.” Berdly says putting them back on their feet.
”Thank you. My head still hurts even after the medication and I can barely see straight.”
”That’s what a concussion does to someone. For the rest of the trip, could I carry you on my back?”
Kris looks at Berdly and remembers something, but they shut it out quickly.
”Ok but just for a bit.”
Berdly leans down and lets Kris hop on. Once on Berdly, he gets up and continues walking.
”So why were you running earlier if you don’t mind me asking?”
”No it’s fine. After Noelle left, me and Susie went and played pretend with my dad’s flowers.”
”What?”
”Nothing. After that, we headed to the school to pick up something and I I.”
Kris’s breathing quickens but before it can get worse, Berdly lays his hand on theirs.
”It’s ok, you don’t have to tell me the rest.”
Kris’s breathing slows down and goes back to normal. Kris lays their head on Berdly's shoulder. “Thank you, Berdly.” Kris’s eyes slowly fall and they fall asleep. Berdly sighs and continues walking with a sleeping Kris on his back. After a bit, Berdly makes it to the Dremurr residence. He opens the door and walks in. Almost immediately after stepping in he hears footsteps coming down the stairs.
”Kris where were you? You had your mother worried sick. I tried to call your father but he didn’t answer.” Toriel appears from the stairs and looks at Berdly's general position. “I can’t see a thing.” Toriel flicks the light switch on. “As I was- Kris!?”
Toriel rushes over to Berdly! “What happened!? Are they ok?” Toriel says in a panic.
”It’s okay Ms. Dreemurr, they hit their head earlier and suffered a concussion. So I gave them some medicine and sleep. And I brought some more medicine for headaches in the morning. I’ll bring them to their room to rest.”
Berdly starts walking to the stairs.
”Thank you, Berdly, for taking care of them.”
”It’s nothing. Anyone could have done it.” Berdly walks upstairs.
Toriel then thinks to herself. “He’s just like his mother.”
Berdly walks into Kris’s bedroom. “Been a while since I’ve been in here.” Berdly thinks to himself. Berdly lays Kris down on their bed and tucks them in, Kris asleep grabs their pillow and holds it tightly against their chest. Berdly looks at them for a moment, he closes his eyes and walks away.
