Chapter Text
It was the first day back to Changhwa all girls private highschool or whatever the name was. The smallest, most prestigious high school in Korea.
Yuha had been going there since freshman year. She’s a senior now, so she knows her way around the school.
Except no one really knows Yuha. She’s always been the quiet girl in the back, just not getting along with the popular girls.
Yuha arrived in her class and sat down in the back like she always had.
5 minutes into the teacher’s presentation, a girl hurries in.
“Sorry I’m late! I slept in…” the girl blurted out, almost tripping in her haste.
The teacher turned to look at her.
“Oh, you must be Roh Yuna!”
The girl, Yuna, nodded.
“Yeah, but you can call me A-na.”
“Alright then, A-na, choose a seat. You should be grateful I’m not counting tardies today.” The teacher, Mrs. Ning, said pointedly.
“Yes ma’am, it will never happen again”
A-na got invited over with the popular girls, as Yuha expected. She was pretty, funny, cool… everything Yuha wasn’t.
A-na didn’t acknowledge Yuha, which she also expected. No one else ever does anyway. But Yuha didn’t really care. She was just here to graduate and get a scholarship for a good college.
Class dragged on. Finally, the bell rang.
“Class dismissed! But Yuha and A-na stay behind.” Mrs. Ning called out.
As everyone else left the classroom, the two girls went to the teacher’s desk.
“Yuha, would you use your next period to show miss A-na around the school? I’ll tell your next period teacher to excuse you.”
Yuha had math next period. She hated math, so why not take an opportunity to skip it with no repercussions?
“Of course I will, miss.” Yuha responded politely.
Yuha, having been going to this school for 3 years now, knows her way around pretty well. So this will be easy for her.
First, Yuha showed her around the classroom side of the building. Nothing really interesting there.
Then Yuha took her to the electives and extracurriculars side.
“Woah, they have a full basketball court? My last school only had one hoop…” A-na muttered.
Yuha nodded.
“Do they have a basketball team?” A-na asked, tilting her head slightly.
“Uh, I think. But you’ll have to ask the gym teacher.” Yuha responded.
A-na definitely noticed how Yuha barely talks.
“Do you always talk this little?”
“Do you always talk this much?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh.”
Yuha finished showing the new girl around. At the end, A-na turned to her. Whatever Yuha was expecting her to say was no where near what was about to come out of this girls mouth.
“You’re really pretty, do you want to be friends?” The younger girl asked.
Yuha just stared.
“Are you serious?” The older girl asked.
A-na’s smile faltered slightly, mistaking it as rejection.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” A-na asked quietly.
She looked like a kicked puppy.
“Oh,” Yuha said, “uhm okay then. We can be friends.”
A-na immediately brightened up.
“Yay!” She said happily.
Later that day, at lunch.
Surprisingly, A-na didn’t sit with the popular girls. She walked right past them towards Yuha’s table.
“Can I sit here?” The younger girl asked, already sitting despite not getting an answer yet.
“…yeah.”
“Soooo, how has your day been? Mines been pretty boring, I mean these popular girls that are so fake kept trying to get me to work with them. I mean, why would I even work with them if they only want me to work with them because I’m pretty? That is so stupid…”
A-na paused. She noticed how quiet Yuha was.
“Are you okay?” A-na asked, tilting her head slightly. Yuha noticed she tends to do that
“Yeah. I just… don’t talk much. Sorry.” Yuha responded quietly.
“Oh, that’s okay! I can talk enough for both of us then!”
Yuha continued eating as A-na started telling her another story.
“Why don’t you sit with anyone?” A-na suddenly asked.
Yuha looked up. “Oh… I just…”
“Sorry, did I overstep? I didn’t mean-“ A-na quickly backtracked.
“No, it’s okay.” Yuha said softly. “It’s just… no one ever really wants to sit with me because I’m, well… me. I’m pretty boring, you know.”
“You’re not boring,” A-na said.
Yuha blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.” A-na smiled. “You’re quiet. That’s different.”
Yuha looked down at her lunch.
“No one’s ever said that before.”
“Well, then everyone else is stupid.”
Yuha looked up at her.
A-na shrugged, completely unfazed.
“I mean, I’ve known you for, like, half a day, but I think you’re nice.”
“You barely know me.”
“Then I guess I have more to learn.”
Yuha stared at her for a moment. She didn’t know what to say to that, so instead, she quietly smiled.
It was small. Barely there.
But A-na noticed.
“Your smile is cute.” A-na blurted.
Yuha’s head shot up.
“Me? Cute? You must have the wrong person…” Yuha stuttered.
“No, I’m sure I have the right person.” A-na said with a teasing lilt to it.
Yuha’s cheeks burned red.
“Oh wow, you’re easy to fluster.” A-na teased again.
“S-shut up…” Yuha mumbled, hiding her face in her sleeve.
A-na laughed.
And for the first time, Yuha wished lunch lasted a little bit longer.
~~
It’s 5th period. Yuha’s walking to class.
“Yuha.”
She froze, turning around, seeing A-na standing there.
“Hm?”
“Help me find my next class. I have ELA with Mrs. Morrow.”
“Didn’t you get a map?”
“I kinda… lost it.”
“Of course you did.” Yuha sighed. “Follow me, we have the same class.”
The two girls began walking.
“So, do you have any friends?”
“Not really.”
“What?”
“Hm?”
“How do you not have any friends?”
Yuha shrugged. “I just don’t.”
“That’s so sad.”
“I’m okay.”
“No, you’re not.”
“I am.”
“Well, now you have me.”
Yuha glanced at her.
“You just met me.”
“And?”
“You don’t know me.”
“That’s what today is for.”
A-na was a very, very curious person. She continued asking questions.
“Are you in any clubs or anything?” A-na asked, tilting her head.
“I’m in the art club.”
A-na perked up.
“Oooh, art is cool! Are you good at it?”
“Kind of?”
“Can you draw me sometime?”
“Uh…”
A-na looked at her.
“Uh what? It’s a yes or no question, and I don’t really care if you say no, that’s okay.” A-na said.
“Oh. Yeah, I can draw you.”
“Wait, didn’t you say we had the same class?” A-na suddenly said, still bouncing on her feet while walking.
“Yeah.”
“Okay, we’re sitting together.”
“What?”
“You heard me. I don’t want to sit with those popular girls anyway.”
“Oh. Uhhh. Okay.”
They got to the classroom.
A-na practically dragged Yuha to the back of the classroom, sitting Yuha down and sitting a bit closer than necessary.
The desks in this school are two people per table, and once you choose a spot in the beginning of the year, there’s no changing unless the teacher changed your seat.
Yuha’s stuck with A-na now.
Yuha realized something she hadn’t before.
A-na’s in the same homeroom as her.
That means they have all classes together.
And that also means A-na will sit with her in every class.
~~
After the last class, Mrs. Ning handed out papers.
“Dorm assignments and keys. Don’t lose these.” She said.
Yuha looked down at hers.
304.
She suddenly heard A-na yell.
“Anyone in here have dorm 304?”
Yuha immediately looked up. She knew there were only two people per dorm.
“Ooh, Yuha. What room did you get?” A-na bounced over. “Maybe it’s close to mine.”
“Uh… 304…” Yuha mumbled.
“Wait… we’re roommates?”
“Haha… I guess.”
“YAY”
A-na suddenly perked up.
“Wait, does this mean we get to study together?”
“Probably.”
“And eat breakfast together?”
“If you wake up on time.”
A-na gasped.
“I can wake up on time!”
Yuha raised an eyebrow.
“You were late this morning.”
“That was one time!”
“It was your first day.”
“Exactly! So it doesn’t count.”
Yuha laughed quietly.
A-na stared at her.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You laughed!”
“No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did!”
Yuha shook her head, still smiling.
A-na smiled too.
She knew this year will be both the best year she’s had and exhausting.
