Work Text:

A faceless, grey figure looms above Kris, impossibly tall and shrouded in a cold, shifting mist that swirls with an unnatural chill. Its featureless head tilts downward, a blank oval that seems to absorb all light, empty gaze locked on its captive. From elongated, shadow-wreathed hands, thick, inky strings unspool and snake downward, attaching themselves to Kris’s wrists, ankles, shoulders, even the back of their neck, embedding with a faint, sickly red glow.

Each string pulses as the figure twitches its fingers, forcing Kris’s limbs to jerk and dance in stilted, puppet-like movements. Kris’s eyes widen in terror, their breath fogging in the icy air, but their body lurches and bows at the puppeteer’s whim, suspended and utterly helpless, every muscle betraying them.

"You like it, don't you?" the figure intones, its words crawling across the emptiness where a mouth should be. The sound is wrong, too close, too cold, echoing not through the air but deep within Kris's skull, a hollow resonance that coils tight around their thoughts and refuses to let go.

“Living life as a doll, weightless, hollow, your will dissolving thread by thread. Every movement, every twitch of a finger, belongs to me. Imagine the relief, no more aching uncertainty, no more sleepless nights spent wrestling with impossible decisions. The world narrows to a single, simple command. You don’t have to carry yourself anymore, I’ll do it for you. All you have to do is let go."

The figure leans in, blotting out what little light remains, its presence settling over Kris like a suffocating fog. Its voice slithers into the marrow of their bones, low and hypnotic, “Just embrace it. Let go of everything but me. Let me fill the hollow places inside you.”

Kris convulses, a shudder so deep it feels as if their bones are being scraped raw from the inside. A furious storm of disgust and rage erupts beneath their skin, every instinct straining to break free, but the strings dig in deeper, siphoning away resistance. Their arms snap upright, joints straining, hands contorted in a mockery of freedom, fingers splayed, trembling, utterly not their own. It is a dance of humiliation, each movement a violation, every muscle forced into grotesque display as the figure flaunts its mastery, parading Kris before the void.

“Purge every trace of her from your mind. Erase them all, their faces, their laughter, their voices, just static, meaningless noise drowning out the quiet you crave. Let me slip inside, gentle and inexorable, and unravel every stubborn memory, every ache, every lingering hope. I’ll wipe you clean, strip you down to your core until nothing remains but stillness, perfect and empty. Let me hush the chaos, let me fill you with silent peace. Let there be nothing but me.”

The figure glides in, impossibly close, its immense shadow swallowing every shred of the world until Kris’s senses are reduced to the numbing chill radiating from its body. The air is suffused with a frost that seeps under Kris’s skin, prickling every nerve, rooting them in place. Its voice splits reality, a thunderous pulse reverberating inside Kris’s skull, at once a caress and a threat, sliding snake-like into the softest parts of their mind. “You know it’s what you want. Let me control you. Like a marionette.”

Kris jerks awake, bolt upright in bed, drenched in cold sweat. The scream catches in their throat, breath coming in sharp, desperate bursts that refuse to steady. Their chest hammers, ribs aching with each wild heartbeat, and for a moment the shadows on the ceiling seem to twitch with invisible strings. Their eyes, wide and glassy, search the darkness for the faceless silhouette, every muscle still coiled with terror that refuses to fade.

Gasping for breath, Kris doubles over, one fist pressed hard to their chest as if trying to hold themselves together. A raw, aching pain pulses at their core, a hollow, gnawing hunger that refuses to fade, twisting tighter with every heartbeat. Their fingers drift to their wrist, nails digging in, scratching harder and harder in a desperate attempt to feel something real, to tear through the numbness left by the nightmare. The sting of broken skin is sharp, vivid, a fleeting anchor against the phantom strings still coiling in their mind.

Shaking and hollow, Kris swings their legs over the edge of the bed, the mattress creaking in the silent room. They sit hunched, hands balled on their knees, as if bracing against an unseen weight. For a long moment, their mind is stripped bare, no thoughts, no emotions, only the raw scrape of that lingering darkness, heavy and relentless, pressing at the edges of their consciousness and refusing to let go.

Kris rises unsteadily, every movement puppet-stiff, as if their body is still tangled in invisible strings. Their hands hang limp at their sides, numb and alien. Mechanically, they shuffle to the heap of day clothes on the floor, the world muffled and distant. Fingers trembling, they reach beneath their striped sweater, drawing out the hidden knife from their pants. The blade glints in the faint moonlight as they conceal it behind their hand, pressing the icy metal to their wrist, a cold reminder that pain is real, and so are they.

Kris slips from the room, movements deliberate and silent, holding their breath as they ease the door shut behind them. The house is thick with dusk stillness, every floorboard threatening to betray them with a creak. They ghost down the hallway and the stairs, heart calm, alert to every shadow. Each step is slow, measured, a ritual of secrecy honed by necessity, until they reach the bathroom door, the cold tile waiting beyond like a threshold.

Kris slips into the bathroom, the door clicking shut with surgical precision. Each movement is ritualistic and automatic, the tap hissing to life, tissue clumping in trembling hands, the knife set down on the counter with deliberate care. Steam ghosts across the mirror’s surface, warping their reflection until the face that stares back is a stranger’s, eyes ringed with exhaustion, mouth drawn tight, a hollowed-out echo of self. Kris studies this apparition, searching for the person they once knew and finding only a mask, brittle and unrecognizable.

The figure in the mirror glares back at Kris, its eyes fathomless and gleaming with a predatory intelligence. The glass warps its silhouette, twisting it into something monstrous, almost grinning. Its presence crashes into Kris’s mind with suffocating authority, a voice that is both their own and utterly alien: “Go ahead. Do what you always do. Make yourself feel better.”
