Summary
Before the world fell apart, everyone was ordinary. Suppressants made heat and ruts manageable, packs had long since faded into history, and most people built their lives around a partner, a home, and whatever future they chose.
War changed that,
Years later, packs have returned as the foundation of survival: alphas lead and protect, betas form the backbone, and the few omegas who survived the worst years have become rarities chased down fiercely.
Layla never cared much about what the rest of the world thinks. She had her mate, her pack, a den she helped make. While safety was never guaranteed, this corner of the world was enough.
Until one day, her mate convinces her to take a break.
Layla needed it. A few hours alone. A chance to wander, swim, remember what it feels like to not have someone constantly worrying over her, and not worry over others. Reluctantly, she agrees. Not realizing her mate is sending her away for the last time.
When she returns, the den is destroyed. Her pack is dead. Layla is alone.
For a now unbonded omega, there is nothing more dangerous.
