   I hear the drag of his bad leg as he steps closer, the clink of his cane once, twice, and then he is touching me, fingers gripping at my shoulder as he shakes me back to wakefulness.

   I push his hand away. “And drunk,” I add, with no small amount of satisfaction. I am exactly as I want to be. I am in control; the drugs merely allow me to think more clearly. This is something that Perry has, historically, proven too uptight to understand. Indeed, there is very little about me that he does not fail to understand.
