May I Have This Dance

Summary:

Lucifer may like his royal guard a little too much. And it's confusing to everyone, including Alastor.

Short piece from pre-canon.

Notes:

I had planned on posting Chapter 7, but I've been busy. This has been cooking in Obsidian for a while, so here you go. I feel it helps build what Lucifer and Alastor's relationship is.

Also! Chapter 7 is almost done, just not yet. I'll try to get it out next (See Oct. 1st while I attempt to have a schedule)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Alastor looked down at the hand offered to him skeptically. Blood red eyes slid up to meet ruby ones. A soft, static laced voice filled the air waves with a single word, "Sire?"

"Oh come now, Alastor," The king spoke with a smile as he extended his hand towards his guard, "Surely you understand what I'm asking."

"I do," The knight nodded, still looking at his king in confusion, "I am perplexed as to why it is to me you are offering such an honor."

"An honor?" Lucifer asked, amusement lacing his voice like honey in tea to Alastor's ears, "I'm simply asking you for a dance. Don't tell me you don't know how to."

"I know how to dance, your majesty," Alastor retorted with narrowed eyes, "I simply wish to know why you are asking me. Is there no one else at this engagement that suits your fancy? You are surrounded by demons of much higher status than I could ever achieve."

"And yet my hand is currently held out to you," Lucifer's smile was warm as he looked up at his knight.

"It is..." Alastor asserted, still looking at the gloved hand held in front of him.

"Then why haven't you taken it?" Lucifer asked, offering his hand further towards his guard.

"Does it not worry you?" Alastor asked, his eyes drifting from the silk-dressed hand to the royalty around the room, "What this proposition may mean for your image? Your decision of keeping me in your presence has already sewn doubt into the minds of your people, taking me to the floor will only feed into those thoughts."

"Why must you worry yourself with the ideas of those who do not matter?" Lucifer asked with a smile, seeming to find Alastor's hesitation to be humorous, "If I have chosen you to be the one who I keep in my graces, who would be so foolish as to question me? I am their king, they mustn't question my decisions."

"Sire..." Alastor spoke softly, a concerned expression adorning his features.

"So I will ask once more," The king met Alastor's eyes with a smile that melted away all of Alastor's worries, "Sir Alastor, may I have this dance?"

Alastor's eyes didn't leave his kings as a small smile spread across his face and he placed his hand into the other’s.
