"Big Shot Autos, you're through to Spamton G. Spamton! How can I help you?"
The popular car dealership had just launched a new line of smaller cars earlier that day that were perfect for shorter journeys within the City. It was hardly a surprise that the ratings immediately shot through the roof. Cars were racing out of the yard faster than they could be produced. It was the thrill of the start of a new line, and Spamton was glad to give it his full attention.
Sure, it was a good ego boost, but it also kept the traffic flowing smoothly. That was what made Cyber City magical, in his opinion.
A launch party was being organised for the end of the week purely to allow everyone time to work, including Spamton himself. The large, spacious office in Big Shot Autos almost seemed too small for the salesman. With a mobile phone in his hand, he was free to pace the length and breadth of the floor while answering questions from a potential customer. At one point, he hopped onto the plush couch, only to pull himself back onto his feet a few minutes to resume walking.
"- into account, yeah, this would be a much better option for you. And between you and me, this is cheaper than our big boys but you're getting the same top quality. I'd bet my bowtie on it." Years of being the 'email guy' meant that he had gained a talent for giving recommendations, even if he could never make the final sale. It was a skill that would shine through when he was asked his opinion on a matter.
The customer evidently thought so, as they were happy to finish the call and let Spamton pack up for the evening. Once he had buttoned up his dark brown overcoat, he was on his way. Eight o'clock in the evening wasn't that late, right?
It was a common sight to see Mister Big Shot driving down the streets in his own special Cungadero, but it was equally common to see him walk. The Queen's Mansion was a short distance away, and a day of being stuck in an office meant he didn't always have the chance to stretch his legs and get some fresh air.
The phone in his pocket let out a familiar chime, and he was quick to fish it out.
"Big Shot Autos, you're through to Spamton G. Spamton! How can I help you? Ah, Sparkstein! I was hoping you'd call me back. I had a chance to talk to my team and my schedule is looking pretty good that day. That chance to do a photoshoot on the grounds of your hotel still there?"
Spamton was animated for the entire walk back to the Queen's Mansion and back to his suite. Two screens floated in front of him as he scribbled notes on one and checked his schedule on the other. These served as the light source once he entered the dark living space. The light switches were ignored as he took a left through an archway into the at-home office.
It would have been just after supper time in the Dreemurr household by the time Tenna arrived at the Queen's Mansion. The family were visiting relatives over the weekend, but Toriel had insisted that there would be no TV tonight so the children could go to bed early. Even though Tenna was immensely disappointed, that tune swiftly changed when he realised the trains to Cyber City were still running, and that would be a perfect way to surprise Spamton!
But when he used the spare key to unlock the door to Spamton's suite, he was confused to find it in total darkness. The staff had insisted that Spamton had returned and had not left.
Spamton wasn't in the bedroom, nor was he watching something on the other TV. He hadn't stepped out onto the balcony, and he wasn't having a shower. That only left the office, and the thought made a shiver run down Tenna's back. It was known that Tenna worked too long each day, but he had the excuse of literally being the television. Spamton had a terrible sense of work-life balance for a mailman-turned-salesman!
Sure enough, there were two sources of an off-white light coming from the middle of the office - the screens that Spamton often used. Tenna reduced the brightness of his screen and crept into the office. One hand was extended just below his hip to make sure he didn't crash into any hidden furniture on his way to the couch where the lights floated.
There, lying on the couch, was Spamton. The mobile phone was face-down on his chest, partially held in place by his right hand as it raised and lowered in light, even spells. The left hand flopped over the edge. Spamton's head had lolled to the left, allowing Tenna the thrill of seeing his boyfriend completely at peace as he dozed.
For a moment, Tenna was tempted to leave Spamton be, as rest was very clearly needed, but he knew this wasn’t a safe place to rest, not with the rotary phone so close. He knelt down and lifted his left hand so he could brush his index and middle fingers along Spamton's cheek. Slowly, Spamton began to stir. The pink eyes fluttered open, unable to focus on anything but the soft glow of…
"... Ant?"
Love surged through every wire in Tenna's body. "Surprise. I made it earlier than planned. I wanted to celebrate your launch today with you in-person rather than -”
"Yeah?" Despite how tired he was, Spamton was lovestruck. "Gimme a minute to get up and grab a different jacket."
"Well, we won't be going far. I was thinking we could celebrate by cuddling and sleeping somewhere that isn't a couch."
Spamton let out a weak, sleepy chuckle. "C'mon, the couch isn't that bad."
"It’s a two-seater. I can't fit on it, Snowdrop." That, apparently, was enough of an argument for Tenna to gently scoop both hands underneath Spamton to lift him and carry him out of the office. In the short trek from there to the bedroom on the opposite side of the living space, Spamton had dozed off again. In fact, he didn't stir while Tenna changed him into pyjamas and tucked him into bed.
The Addison did, however, return to the land of the waking when he felt himself being moved to rest against the warmth of Tenna's robotic form under a soft pair of pyjamas. He mustered just enough strength to lift himself up and kiss the host before settling back down once more to drift back to sleep.
