Soft light filtered through the shear curtains and cascaded over the sleeping figures on the bed. As a beam of light hit his eyes, Phainon squeezed them tighter to get a few more minutes of sleep. On his chest, he could feel the gentle breaths of his lover skimming over his skin as Mydei remained firmly in the realm of dreams. Phainon carded his fingers through the other man’s hair with a fond smile, which only widened further when he heard Mydei’s soft murmurs of contentment.
Phainon looked forward to these kind of mornings; lazy, soft, and warm, with nowhere and nobody to be. Mornings where he can just exist in the moment and appreciate the dawn that has come to Amphoreus. He breathed a soft sigh and pressed his cheek into Mydei’s hair. This was everything.
CLANG!
Phainon and Mydei jumped out of bed simultaneously, honed battle reflexes kicking into high gear as they sprinted out the room, grabbing Dawnmaker and a spear leaned against the door. They practically barrelled into the kitchen expecting the absolute worst-
“Oh. Uh. Hi Dad. Hi Father.”
What they saw was Ego frozen over spilled batter, a soaked rag in one hand and spatula in the other. Behind him, Sellie was scooping more batter from the counter back into a large, now dented, bowl. The kitchen was a mess, where several other bowls, ladles and wasted ingredients lay scattered across every available surface.
Phainon took a ragged breath, then a second before lowering his sword. “Ego. Sellie. What happened?”
Ego bashfully looked down at the puddle at his feet then at the pan on the stove. “We, uh… we were making breakfast!”
Sellie rolled her eyes and placed the bowl back on the counter. “I told him to use a ladle.”
“Father doesn’t use a ladle.” Ego muttered, continuing to scoop up the batter on the floor with his rag. “The stupid thing slipped ‘cause of the eggs…”
“Language.” Mydei scolded, his voice still rough with sleep. He sighed and leaned his spear against the door frame before walking over to Ego. “Sellie is right, you should have used a ladle.”
Ego looked up with indignation. “You don’t!”
“I’ve had years to practice, Gregorios. And my arms are much bigger than yours.” Mydei chided, grabbing the mop Sellie brought over and offering it to Ego. “Let’s get this cleaned up, then we can help with breakfast.”
“No!” Ego and Sellie exclaimed simultaneously, jumping the two demigods. The children pushed Phainon and Mydei to the kitchen table and sat them down on the chairs.
“We’re making breakfast today!” Ego announced with determination, grabbing the mop from Mydei’s hand. “You two just relax and leave it to us.”
Sellie nodded in agreement before following her brother back into the kitchen. Phainon and Mydei looked at each other dumbfounded before sharing an amused and fond smile. Mydei shook his head and leaned back in his chair, watching the two kids bicker about how to continue from where they left off. “Not exactly the morning I was expecting today.”
Phainon laughed as he leaned his head on Mydei’s shoulder. Their lazy morning had turned loud and active and full of life as Ego and Sellie finally figured out a way to make breakfast without turning the already messy kitchen into a warzone.
“It’s a great morning.”
