"The pixels are starting to scream," Mira mutters, her voice a dry rattle that scrapes against the silence of the control room. She isn't talking about sound, but the way the grainy, grayscale archival data is vibrating behind her retinas.
For four nights, the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory has been their sanctuary and their prison. The clouds have rolled in like a heavy wet blanket, swallowing the stars and forcing them away from the telescopes and into the sterile, humming glow of the monitor banks. They are blink-comparing coordinates—staring at one frame, then the next, hunting for a single, microscopic shift in a sea of static.
Mira’s auburn hair is a chaotic nest, static-charged and frayed. She runs a hand through it, but the gesture lacks its usual theatricality. There is no spark in her fingers, only a heavy, leaden lethargy that makes her shoulders slump. The air in the room is recycled and stale, smelling of ozone and the bitter dregs of cold canned coffee. Her eyes are bloodshot, the lids feeling like sandpaper against her corneas.
Beside her, Ao is a statue of focused desperation. Her blue hair is dampened by a thin film of sweat at the hairline, clinging to her forehead. She doesn't blink; she barely breathes. Her intelligence has curdled into a frantic sort of perfectionism, her gaze locked onto the screen with a predatory intensity.
"We should get some sleep," Mira breathes, the words barely escaping her throat.
Ao doesn't turn. She just shakes her head, a sharp, jerky motion that sends a shiver of tension through her spine. "Not yet," she whispers, her voice thin and brittle. "We need to keep pushing ourselves. If we stop now, we lose the trail."
Mira feels the heat radiating off Ao—a feverish, exhausted warmth. She can see the way Ao’s fingers are trembling where they grip the mouse, the knuckles white and strained. Slowly, Mira reaches out. She doesn't just touch her; she envelops her, sliding an arm around Ao’s narrow shoulders and pulling her back against her chest. The contact is sudden and visceral. Ao stiffens, a sharp intake of breath hitching in her lungs, before she collapses backward into Mira’s warmth. Mira buries her face in the crook of Ao’s neck, smelling the salt and the exhaustion.
"How about if I push myself for you?" Mira murmurs, her voice vibrating against Ao’s skin. "Then you can get some sleep, yeah?"
Ao lets out a small, broken whine—a sound of total surrender. She nuzzles deep into the touch, her forehead resting against Mira’s collarbone as the screens finally fade into a blur of meaningless light.
