Work Text:

Maybe this way, they could pretend that they were normal people. Not that two guys on a date can be called normal, but it sounds better than two Port Mafia executives on a date.

At least that’s what Dazai would like to believe. Except this outing of theirs didn’t look or feel like a date. Actually, he’s pretty sure he was the only one who thought of this as a date. A pretty terrible one, at that.

The day had begun normally for them. As normal as it could be for Port Mafia executives, at least. Except for one thing: Dazai had noticed that Chuuya didn’t argue with him as much as he usually did. This was a really rare occurrence, because Chuuya never failed to be offended by everything Dazai said.

This could only mean one thing.

It was one of the rare days when Chuuya’s tolerance for Dazai’s antics would be higher than usual.

If that’s the case, then Chuuya might just agree to go out with him that day.

As soon as this occurred to Dazai, he started making arrangements. He first requested to be excused for the evening with Mori. It took some persuading and negotiating, but they came to an agreement fairly quickly. Next he started planning what they would do for that evening. Going to the amusement park was quickly eliminated, because Chuuya doesn’t like crowds. Going out for dinner seemed like something Chuuya would like, but people don’t usually spend more than two hours on dinner. Plus, he and Chuuya would be excused starting around three in the evening. They’ve got to do something in between that time and dinner.

So, after some consideration, Dazai decided to take his partner to watch a movie before going to dinner. It seemed good enough for a plan put together in less than an hour. He even booked the seats around their own in the cinema so they had more privacy.

Then came the slightly harder part: actually asking Chuuya out. Dazai had succeeded in negotiating with Mori, so this shouldn’t be too hard.

They’d just finished their task for the day and were on their way back to the headquarters when Dazai decided to ask the question. “Chuuya, wanna go out with me this evening?”

Chuuya looked at him strangely and stopped walking. “Go out?”

“Yeah.” Dazai stopped too and very discreetly wiped his hands on his pants. He could do this. He could negotiate with a Mafia boss, so he could ask a guy out. Of course he could.

Chuuya shifted his weight to his left leg. “Where?”

“There’s this new movie at the cinema. I was thinking we could go watch it together…?” Why did the statement turn into a question?

A bead of sweat rolled down the back of Dazai’s neck as Chuuya stared at him. Holy shit, he’s so nervous. He didn’t know asking someone out was so nerve-wrecking. It’s worse than negotiating with Mori. Gods, he’s going to lose his cool.

“Alright,” Chuuya said after what felt like ages. “But now, we need to get back to submit our reports.”

With that, Chuuya continued walking again. Dazai could feel a smile spreading on his face as he quickly fell into step with his partner. That wasn’t too hard.

Now, let’s see what had become of this date.

“Dazai, you have no taste in movies.”

For the nth time that day, Dazai resisted the urge to sigh. “I know, Chuuya. You’ve said that so many times already.”

Next to him, Chuuya snorted as he shoved some popcorn into his mouth. “Seriously, this movie sucks. Too many explosions and they’re all screaming their lines. They make it look like trained professionals can be taken down so easily. I thought the main character was just your average guy, so how was he able to face the bad guys with just the thought of vengeance driving him? That’s stupid. Honestly, if that guy’s actions could be done in real life, the Port Mafia would’ve been no more, seeing how much hatred we had gathered over the years.”

Dazai massaged his temples. He was thankful he’d booked the seats around them, because they would’ve been kicked out by now if anyone were around to hear their complaints. “I know, right? I’m regretting every cent I spent to watch this thing. Not to mention the traffic jam we had to sit through just to get to the theater.” He sighed. “At least the popcorn’s pretty good.”

“Can’t argue with that.” Chuuya poured the last of the popcorns into his mouth. “God, all the explosions are killing me. Can we get outta here? I might blow this place up if I hear another explosion.”

Dazai checked the time on his watch. According to their movie tickets, the movie wouldn’t end for another hour. He really couldn’t spend another minute here, because all the exaggerated sound effects were giving him a headache. “Alright, let’s go.”

So much for a date. After all the trouble he went through to ask Chuuya out, Dazai grumbled mentally as they left. The days when Chuuya wasn’t angry at him could be counted with the fingers of one hand and Dazai had wasted one on a shitty movie. And he’s supposed to be a genius.

“Yo, Dazai. I’m starving. Let’s grab something to eat.”

“Chuuya, dinner is in another hour. Besides, you just ate a bucket of popcorns.”

“So what? C’mon, I’ll treat you to something.”

In his surprise, Dazai almost tripped on his own feet. He stopped in his tracks to gather his bearings while Chuuya continued walking at a leisurely pace. When he noticed that Dazai wasn’t following him, Chuuya stopped and turned. “What?”

“You just offered to treat me to something,” Dazai said in wonder. “That’s a first.”

Chuuya laughed. A very rare occurrence. “Yeah. The movie was so bad I couldn’t even find it in myself to be pissed. Figured I could afford to do something to salvage this terrible date.”

“Oh.” Dazai nodded. For some reason, his brain was processing Chuuya’s words very slowly. Then the last word Chuuya said sunk in.

Date. Chuuya said this was a date.

“How long are you going to stand there like an idiot?” Chuuya said impatiently. “If you’re not coming, I’m leaving you behind.” He turned on his heels and started walking again. Closer observation revealed that the tips of his ears were red.

Heat crept up Dazai’s face. Chuuya said this was a date. A grin slowly spread on Dazai’s face, widening until Dazai was almost worried his face might split in two. Chuuya said this was a date.

With his mood elevated, Dazai jogged after his companion – no, his date. “Hey, wait for me!”

Maybe this date wasn’t so terrible after all.

This is what happens when you tell someone who's never been on a date before to write two idiots on a date
