A long yawn escaped Sunny as he lounged on the couch, one arm hanging off the side.
He blinked slowly as he absently watched the ceiling fan spin above him. The breeze it provided was cool against his face, the chill just enough to let him wrap up in a blanket.
Basil walked past the couch, smiling at Sunny. “Comfy?”
“Mhmm…” Sunny hummed sleepily without opening his eyes.
“Seems like it.” Basil giggled before walking off again.
Sunny rubbed his eyes as he rolled over onto his side. The blanket slipped off his legs slightly, so he flicked it over to wrap the end around his feet again. It trapped the warmth closer around him.
His breaths came slow, and he found it getting harder and harder to keep his eyes open. Eventually, he stopped trying to. Instead, he just let himself sink further into the couch cushions as his eyes closed.
Before he knew it, almost the whole morning had passed him by as he lay there. He rolled into his side.
Was it even still morning…? Maybe.
He couldn't tell, and he didn't care to either.
Footsteps padded lightly towards him. “You really like that blanket, huh?” Basil giggled.
Sunny let out a content groan. And a few slurred syllables—a sleepy attempt at speaking.
“You know…” Basil tucked the blanket tighter around Sunny’s shoulders. “If you lay there too long, you might disappear into the couch!”
A smile spread across Sunny’s face. He felt warmer.
Basil’s expression was soft as he watched him. He found himself staring longer than he meant to.
“A-anyways…” Basil shook his head, tearing his gaze away as he began to walk off.
Sunny remained glued to the couch.
The smile stayed on his face.
The warmth stayed too.
He balled up tighter, pulling his knees to his chest as he propped his head atop the armrest. Time passed slowly, or quickly, or maybe it was frozen entirely.
Sleep threatened to take him again.
“Uhm…” Basil’s voice was quiet. “H-hey, Sunny?”
Sunny stirred slightly, flickering one eye open to look up at Basil.
Basil stood right in front of the couch, hands held together in front of him.
Sunny yawned. Then slowly sat up while keeping the blanket around him as best he could.
The ceiling fan's breeze hit him as he did, briefly, before he repositioned the blanket around himself.
“Morning…” He rubbed his eyes before they fell closed again.
The cushion sank as Basil sat beside him.
He took a slow breath. “You know…” Basil said softly.
His gaze landed on his lap as he twiddled his thumbs. “I-I… really like having you here.”
Silence stretched between them.
Sunny tilted his head towards Basil. “Huh?” His eyelids were still heavy, but he fought to keep them open.
Basil’s cheeks flushed with a bright pink. “W-well… it's just—”
He swallowed. “It's just… nice, okay?”
The ceiling fan droned on above them, filling the air with a slight breeze.
“I-I don't know… it's just—” Basil’s eyes traced the fabric of the couch. “It's e-easier… somehow…”
“I-I know that doesn't really make sense, b-but—” He added on quickly while shifting in his seat.
“Uhm— w-well…” Basil brushed his hair behind his ear. “You being here… I-I like it…”
His head lowered with his voice now barely a whisper. “I-I… like you…”
Silence.
He swallowed. His chest felt tight.
His gaze stayed on his lap, unable to get himself to look anywhere else.
The silence was deafening.
His hands gripped tightly to his legs.
Sunny wasn't answering.
Basil felt his breath leave him.
He wasn't answering.
Sunny didn't—
He just ruined it. He doesn't feel the same. Of course he didn't.
He was stupid to have—
Basil sniffled.
The tears came on their own, no matter how hard he tried to stop them.
And Sunny wasn't even saying anything…
He was probably too shocked that Basil would ever have thought something like that…
Probably astonished—probably disgusted.
Why did he have to say anything? Why did he have to make it weird?
He sniffled. “S-Sunny…?” His voice was shaky as he finally looked up at him.
“Uh—” Basil froze.
Sunny's head was leaning against the backrest as he faced Basil, eyes closed and mouth slightly open. He was drooling against the cushion.
“U-uhm—”
Sunny… was asleep.
Basil was shaky.
“Uh— Uhm—”
His mouth hung open for a moment. Then his broken breaths turned into a snort, then a giggle.
He wiped his eyes on his sleeve.
“O-oh, Sunny…” He exhaled slowly as a smile crept across his face.
Basil looked down, expression mellowing for a moment. His heart was still pounding, hands shaking.
Then he looked back up.
The backrest pressed Sunny’s cheek into the rest of his face. His hair was a mess too.
Basil gripped his shirt while he watched him sleep. His own breaths began to even out.
“At least listen…” He whispered.
Then he leaned forward and brushed Sunny’s hair out of his face.
His sleepy expression was soft. So incredibly soft and peaceful and cute and—
Basil sighed, shaking his head.
After a moment, he gently kissed Sunny’s forehead, eliciting a slight hum from him as he slept.
Basil turned away as his cheeks heated up further. “A-another time then…”
He glanced at Sunny for a moment. And gaze lingered.
A smile was stuck on his face.
He cleared his throat, forcing his gaze away as he stood up.
His cheeks felt hot as he held his hands to them. “N-next time…”
