Sunny woke up with a quiet groan. He rolled over onto his side, moving to wrap his arm around Basil but—
He wasn't there.
His eyes opened quickly as he sat up.
The room was dark. Only a faint sliver of moonlight crept through the window to light it.
Sunny swallowed and slid out from under the blankets. The hard wood floor was cold beneath his feet. He shivered.
The boards creaked as he walked across the room. He stepped into the hallway and looked around.
Nothing.
He shut the door with a click as he continued looking.
The house felt still. The dead cold of night was still wrapped around it.
Basil wasn't anywhere to be found, not the bathroom, the spare bedroom, or the main room.
Sunny looked around the main room twice. The kitchen was empty, so was the couch. He wasn't getting a drink or looking over the flowers.
He pursed his lips and started towards the door, opening it slowly.
The air hit him colder than the empty house.
The flowers sat in pots along the dirt driveway. The trees and grass rustled faintly in the breeze. And Basil was sitting on the curb of the road, head hung low.
Sunny frowned. He walked through the damp grass and pavement, rubbing his arms to ward off the cold.
Without a word, he sat down next to Basil on the rough concrete.
Basil jumped slightly when he noticed. His mouth opened without a sound, then shut again.
The night was almost silent; the crickets chirping filled it.
Basil looked away, hands fidgeting on his lap. He ended up staring at them, even as Sunny sat beside him.
The darkness blanketed the world and sapped it of color. Gray and black was all that could be made out under the pale moon's glow.
They sat silently. Not a word nor whisper. Just their breaths and the wind.
Basil glanced over at Sunny. His gaze was turned upwards, and Basil followed it.
The moon was hanging high still. The sky was filled with twinkling stars, faint but ever glowing. Some were white and some orange or even red. A single bright blue-white star outshone the rest.
His eyes widened slightly. He looked over at Sunny again, his eyes were sparkling too.
Then his gaze fell to his lap again as a small smile came to his face. He clasped his hands together and exhaled.
The night looked a little brighter now.
Basil leaned over and rested his head against Sunny’s shoulder.
Sunny froze for a moment before relaxing again. He stayed perfectly still.
Sunny’s presence felt soft and warm against the night. Basil inched closer, closing his eyes.
A moment passed as the stars shone overhead.
“Sunny…?” Basil whispered.
Sunny looked at him. “Hmm?”
“...Nevermind.”
Basil’s smile faltered for a second before brightening again.
“Thank you.”
