For reasons yet unknown, human psi capability peaks around the age of ten, reaching levels no adult psionic could ever hope to achieve. Seeing this untapped potential, the Galactic Astronavy developed the process of consciousness proxying, allowing trained professional psionics and pilots to temporarily inhabit the bodies of children and use this near-unlimited power to usher in a new age of interstellar travel. The proxies recruited for this purpose and kept on staff on Navy capital ships are treated with the utmost care and respect — or so you would hope. The truth, I'm sorry to say, is a much sadder story.
