He pauses, shell held in front of him, staring but not seeing. His head frills twitch. Had he imagined a sound?

I wrote this story a few years ago to challenge myself with a new genre.
Our protagonist, a young journalist in search of his first big story, investigates the mysterious death of a local scientist. It appears to be a simple case of a firebomb thrown in through his office window, but nobody has a motive and the crime scene looks...odd. He doesn't have much success until a local barbershop frequented by the scientist's friend is bombed in a similar manner, giving our protagonist the clue he needs to track down the original research notes of the project they were working on.

The sight cracks something within him.
“Release him,” Batman snarls. The entity only cements himself more firmly in front of his son, nearly blocking him from view. The growling grows. Nightwing unsheathes his escrima sticks.
