Forever, Forever, Forever

Summary:

Luxintrus’s existence was repurposed.

And she was glad. She spent her final moments protecting her loved ones, her friends, her family. She could only hear Rat’s screams for her as she slipped further and further down the rabbit hole of death.

And then she woke up.

OR
a snapshot of Lux's new forever place, not quite dead but not quite alive

Work Text:

Luxintrus’s existence was repurposed.

And she was glad. She spent her final moments protecting her loved ones, her friends, her family. She could only hear Rat’s screams for her as she slipped further and further down the rabbit hole of death.

And then she woke up.

Well… not quite ‘waking up’. More like a sudden awareness of her situation. Lux looked around the field she stood in, with beige grass that came up to her torso and sunflowers scattered around it. The meadow stretched on for infinity and Lux was sure if she walked around it for long enough she would end up here once more.

Her new outfit, a silked robe of white, cascaded around her form and disappeared into the field.

It contrasted with her now purple hair and as she put her arms around her frame she felt the arm she thought long gone obey her commands.

There was nothing to really do here, was this truly death? Or some in between that Folly conjured up for mercy.

It didn't really matter. Nothing did any more.

She gazed upwards. Rolling masses of clouds blocked out some of the pure blue sky and if she squinted hard enough she would swear she saw figures that reassembled the people back home.

Home was a funny term now. Or was it?

Lux didn't know. She didn't know how long it had been. Hours since her death or was it more like a year. Or mere moments ago?

The familiarity she knew from her world had all but slipped away.

She tried to speak, to beg, to do something but the words were lost on her tongue. She could only manage to pray a simple, foolish prayer to Folly.

She doesn't know how long she has spent on her knees in prayer. She doesn't know when she will stop.

Luxintrus’s only fraction of comfort is the people she sees in the clouds. Her memory, sluggish as it may be, supplemented those people as Rat, Astron and Blake. It may be a glimpse of what they are doing right now or a snapshot of a moment far back in time.

It turns out the dead are watching over the living. And she will for the rest of time.
