Work Text:
People always assume I’m a huge flirt. Maybe I am, but it’s all an act. I’ve learned that no one likes me when I’m truly myself. Who would like a nerdy Air Force pilot?
So I learned how to become a flirt and play the dumb card. Makes it a lot easier to build relationships.
Saying that I’ve always hated dances. I never went to any of my homecoming dances in high school or either of my high school proms. I usually skip military balls if I’m able to.
So this little celebration thing that Elizabeth thought was a good idea to throw to get people’s morale up is not something I wanted to go to. But since I’m the tactical officer I didn’t have a choice in the matter.
Loud music fills the mess as I stand next to Rodney who’s staring into his punch glass and complaining about energy consumption. “You know I’m sure you drinking the amount of coffee that you do doesn’t help,”
He glares at me. “I’ll have you know that coffee is my fuel,” we both have to shout in order to be heard over to music.
“I’ve noticed,” I shout back.
And then I see her. Elizabeth had decided to show up after all. I was starting to think that she had bailed. And she looks amazing. Her hair is in a half up half down do. And she’s wearing an ankle length red dress. I can’t help but stare. I know I shouldn’t.
Rodney notices me staring at her. “What?” He asks then follows my gaze. “You keep staring at her and she’s going to think you’re secretly a creep,” I elbow him in the side causing some of his punch to splash out. “Hey!” He fusses looking down at himself.
She slowly walks over to me and our eyes meet and I swear that time stops. Or at least slows down. Rodney says something but I can’t hear him.
Next thing I know she’s standing in front of me. She smiles softly. “You look nice tonight Corneal Shepard,” oh she’s calling be my name. Two can play at that game.
“You as well Dr. Weir,” I swear I see a faint blush on her cheeks begin to form as she looks down. Her hands clasped together in front of her.
She looks back up at me. “Are you going to invite me to dance?”
“Well, who would I be to deny someone like you,” I’m pretty sure Rodney chokes.
“I’m going to go find Jennifer,” he says before walking off.
Knowing him he’s probably going to try to sneak off to his lab. I’m the one that dragged him here in the first place.
I put my arm out for her and she rests her hand in the crook of my elbow. I lead her to the area that’s been set up for dancing. Then I place one hand on her hip while she places one on my shoulder. Our left and right hands interlock with one another as we begin to move back and forth.
I don’t think I’ve ever noticed the height difference between us before. “Didn’t know you could dance Corneal,”
I smile down at her. “It’s a requirement,”
“Oh, really?” She asks teasingly.
“You know Dr. I think this violates the chain of command,”
She tilts her head up at me. “Technically no. I’m in charge of the civilians. You’re in charge of the military. We only work together that’s all,”
“Then you’re going to explain this to Landry if he ever finds out,”
She smiles up at me. “Deal,” then she’s resting her head against my chest and I swear I feel my heart stutter.
This is nice. I wish we could stay like this forever.
