Buck blinks his eyes open slowly. The first thing he registers when he wakes up is the sunlight peaking in through the blinds, the sudden brightness making him squint involuntarily, and one of his hands fly up to shield his eyes from the sudden adjustment. The second thing he registers–which probably should've been the first thing–is the heat of Eddie pressed firmly against his back, his chest flush against Buck's shoulder blades. He’s got one sturdy arm draped across Buck's waist, pulling him back even in his sleep.
Buck shifts slightly, trying to stretch his limbs, but the moment he moves even an inch Eddie immediately reacts, a low hum vibrates against the crook of Buck's neck. He turns his head a tiny bit, glancing back to see if Eddie's awake.
His eyes are still closed, his lashes casting long shadows on his cheeks, but his grip tightens instinctively, and his fingers curl into the back of Buck's pajama pants, tugging him backwards with a small jerk.
Buck lets out a breathy laugh, his heart swelling so sharply that it almost feels like a physical ache in his chest. He loves Eddie. He loves him in all the big, obvious ways, but it’s small moments like these that really center Buck more than anything. The sleepy mornings, Eddie reaching for him without even thinking about it. He loves that even half-asleep, Eddie always seems to know where Buck is.
They don’t get enough of this. Usually, they have a shift waiting for them, two kids to tend to, somewhere they need to be. They’re always squeezing in whatever little pockets of time they can find– a hand squeeze under the table, a few stolen minutes in the showers. Buck wouldn’t trade their current reality for the world, but sometimes, he wishes he could just freeze time and sink into Eddie, holding him close until they merge into one.
Sighing contentedly, Buck lets himself melt into the embrace. He reaches down, grabbing the edge of the heavy comforter and hauling it higher, tucking it around their shoulders. It's a little cold outside the blankets, but there’s no shortage of warmth behind him; Eddie is practically a human furnace. Buck wiggles his backside closer, shamelessly seeking every bit of warmth Eddie has to offer.
“Mm,” Eddie murmurs, his voice a sleep-thick rasp that sends a shiver straight down Buck's spine. Eddie nuzzles deeper into the junction of Buck's neck and shoulder, his breath hot against the skin.
“Morning,” Buck whispers, even though Eddie is nowhere near awake enough to answer him.
With a bit of determination, Buck manages to pivot within the circle of Eddie's arms, slowly sliding around until they're chest-to-chest.
Eddie's eyes flutter open, dark and still clouded with sleep. For a moment he just looks at Buck, blinking like he’s trying to wake himself up, before a faint, tender smile touches the corners of his mouth. Without a word, Buck leans in and captures Eddie's mouth in a kiss. Eddie breathes into it immediately, one hand sliding up from Buck's waist to settle at the back of his neck, fingers slipping into Buck’s messy curls and tugging gently to pull him in deeper.
Buck pulls back just a fraction, their foreheads resting together. Eddie's thumb begins to stroke lazy circles into the side of his neck. “Morning,” Buck whispers again.
“Morning,” Eddie says back. He leans forward, shifting his focus to press a sweet kiss to Buck's birthmark.
Buck closes his eyes and lets a soft sound of pleasure escape him. He looks down for a second and finally notices what Eddie’s wearing. He had stolen one of Buck’s old grey t-shirts to sleep in–a shirt that was already a bit snug on Buck’s broader frame, and on Eddie, it was practically oversized. The sleeves swallow his arms, the hem hangs loose around his hips and the collar dips just enough to show a hint of his collarbone.
Buck starts trailing kisses down Eddie's jawline, humming happily. “You look cute in my shirt,” he murmurs against Eddie's skin.
Eddie lets out a small huff of a laugh, his eyes falling shut as Buck presses another kiss along the line of his jaw. “It's huge on you,” Buck teases, nipping lightly at Eddie's earlobe. He slips his hand under the shirt where the hem has ridden up slightly, his palm meeting the solid ridges of Eddie’s abs. “I kind of want to eat you alive.”
“Do it,” Eddie chuckles, his voice still gravelly. He squeezes Buck tighter, pulling him against him until their legs are an intertwining mess under the blankets. “We have hours anyway.”
Hours, Buck thinks, as pure bliss crashes over him. Hours of Eddie, hours with Eddie, he could spend a lifetime in this position and it still wouldn’t be enough.
Suddenly, reality flickers back into his mind. “Shit,” Buck realizes, his eyes snapping open. “What time is it?”
Eddie shrugs like it doesn't really matter. It’s a strange sight; Eddie is usually the one obsessing over the clock. He’s the one who insists on being punctual, who always suggests they leave early to account for traffic. Buck has apparently ruined Eddie’s sense of discipline.
Buck pulls back slightly, reaching for his phone on the nightstand, but before he can touch it, Eddie’s hand shoots out, grabbing it first. “Eddie,” Buck groans.
“What?” he asks, completely unbothered.
“I’m just checking the time.”
“You don't need to,” Eddie says, matter-of-factly. “We’re fine.”
“Eddie.”
“Buck. We’re fine,” he repeats, just as unbothered, if not more.
“How do you know that if you won’t let me check?” Buck stresses. Eddie responds by reaching behind himself and holding the phone out of Buck’s reach. Real mature. “Please? Can I see the time?” He pleads, and Eddie finally, finally relents, placing the phone into Buck’s waiting palm.
“Thank you,” Buck says, immediately turning the screen toward himself. His eyes widen when he sees the time. “We’re supposed to be at Maddie's and Chim's in an hour.” Eddie simply raises an eyebrow and tightens his hold, paying the panic in Buck’s voice absolutely no mind. He buries his face in Buck's neck, effectively shutting out the rest of the world. “I gotta shower,” Buck tries, barely managing to sound convincing. He doesn’t move, and Eddie makes no effort to let him go. “I mean it,” Buck adds, though he’s lying through his teeth. He’s not really in any rush to leave.
Eddie hums, clearly unconvinced. In one fluid motion, he shifts his weight, lifting a leg and sliding upward until he’s straddling Buck’s lap, effectively pinning him to the mattress. “Five more minutes,” Eddie slurs, his voice stubborn and demanding.
Buck blinks up at him, suddenly extremely breathless. Eddie knows that Buck can’t ever deny him, he knows the pull he has over Buck, knows exactly how to use that against him to get what he wants. Before Buck can even attempt to respond, Eddie captures his mouth into another kiss. This one's deeper, messier. It’s as if Eddie’s trying to pull the very soul out of Buck to ensure he stays on the bed.
Buck groans into the kiss, his hands sliding down to grip Eddie’s hips, pulling him impossibly closer, his resolve crumbling instantly. “You're gonna make us late,” Buck manages when they pull apart for a second.
Eddie smiles against his mouth. “You don't sound very upset about it.”
“I'm trying to be responsible,” Buck insists, though his fingers are already slipping under the shirt to run along Eddie’s back.
“Mm-hm.” Eddie presses another kiss to Buck’s mouth, then another to his jaw. “And how’s that working out for you?”
Buck laughs, unable to help smiling. “Terribly. You’re a terrible influence.”
“The worst,” Eddie agrees, nuzzling into the space behind Buck’s ear. The solid weight of Eddie’s body is keeping him there, and Buck can’t bring himself to mind at all. “You love it.”
“I do,” Buck admits easily, because it’s the truth. He loves everything about this. “I really do.”
They stay like that for a while, trading lazy kisses as the morning light grows brighter through the blinds. Buck loses track of time, allowing himself to get wrapped into the slow morning.
Eventually, Buck’s phone buzzes from somewhere on the mattress where Eddie had tossed it, and they both groan.
“That’s probably Maddie,” Buck remarks, though he makes no move to retrieve it.
“Probably,” Eddie agrees, pressing one more kiss to Buck’s birthmark. “Five more minutes?”
Buck grins, already reaching for him again. “Five more minutes.”
After a while, Buck knows they have more than passed the five minute agreement, but honestly, nothing in the world could move him from Eddie’s hold just yet.
They’ll just be late. Buck will have to text Maddie later; he’ll apologize, promise to make it up to her by baking something next time, maybe offer a date night or two, but that’s a problem for later. Right now, Eddie is warm and comfortable in his arms, and Buck can’t think of anywhere else he’d rather be.
