At exactly four PM on Sunday, Parrot knocked three times on Flame’s door. He waited a few moments, adjusting the straps of his backpack. Soon enough the door opened.
“At exactly four PM?” Flame raised a brow.
“Hello to you too,” Parrot snickered.
“Yeah, yeah, hi,” Flame rolled his eyes. Then he stepped aside to let Parrot in.
The house overall was rather clean, from what the college student observed. He took his shoes off by the entrance and put his bag next to the couch, as usual. The group normally hung out at Flame’s house, as he was the closest most of the time. And also because he had the space.
Parrot couldn’t host because he lived in his dorm, Wemmbu’s apartment wasn’t that big (plus he was sharing it with Egg), and Spoke’s flat was just a mess more often than not. So Flame’s house was always the go-to. Either way, it was just waiting for Wemmbu and Spoke to show up. Flame and Parrot chatted a little, but mostly waited quietly.
Eventually, around four-o-seven, Spoke came knocking. Which was to say he knocked once and then called Flame’s name at an unreasonably loud volume. As soon as Flame said that the door was unlocked, Spoke let himself in. Wemmbu arrived around four-twenty, complaining that his work had tried to make him come in when he always had Sundays off.
~~~
About an hour or so had passed by now. And while the four were having a little downtime, unsure what to do, Parrot finally asked the question.
“Spoke, what did you have planned, exactly?”
“What-?” Spoke queried, looking up from his phone. He had been trying to find some random questions or activities they could do.
“You originally wanted Mane to be here, right? What for?” Parrot elaborated.
“Oh, right!” He reached over to grab his bag, dug around a little, and then pulled a bottle out. “I had a little game in mind.”
“A drinking game?” Flame raised a brow, staring at the bottle of what they all quickly saw was whiskey.
“Yeah,” Spoke shrugged, a grin still plastered on his face. “We’re all of age, so why not?”
“It’s making sense why you wanted Mane here,” Wemmbu snickered.
“Pft- were you going to make him drive you all home?” Flame laughed.
“That was the original plan,” Spoke giggled. “Anywho, are we all up for it?”
“Sure,” Flame shrugged.
“Fine,” Parrot sighed.
Wemmbu thought for a moment. “Why not,” he hummed.
“We’re eating first though,” Flame said before Spoke could get too excited. “Drinking on an empty stomach is a shit idea.”
“Good idea, Flame,” Parrot nodded, while at the same time Spoke groaned in complaint. Wemmbu just looked mildly confused before assuming that yeah, having what was basically a liquid toxin without eating anything probably wouldn’t be the smartest idea. He hasn’t had alcohol before, if that wasn’t obvious already.
So Flame made a quick dinner, they all ate, and then they sat down on the floor. Before Parrot managed to convince them all to make sure they had a spot to sleep, because having to do that after drinking wouldn’t be great. None of them had actually gone drinking together before, so this would surely be a learning experience.
And then they finally sat in a circle, with Spoke placing the bottle in the middle.
“Spin the bottle,” he declared with his usual grin.
“No,” Wemmbu immediately denied.
“Let me finish!” Spoke rolled his eyes, “Instead of any romantic things, it’s like truth or dare. Whoever spins it has to ask the question or give the dare, and whoever it lands on has to choose which one they want. And if you don’t want to do it, you take a shot. Then we keep going until the bottle’s empty or we all agree to end it.”
“..That works,” Wemmbu looked away.
“This’ll be interesting,” Flame smirked.
“Yeah.. I’m grabbing water,” Parrot sighed, a smile tugging at his lips.
“Bottles are in the fridge,” Flame directed as Parrot made his way over. Then he came back with four, just in case. He handed everyone a cool bottle, which they all placed besides themselves.
“So.. Who’s spinning it first?” Spoke queried.
Before anyone could say a word, Wemmbu reached and spun the bottle.
“Well, that answers that,” Flame snickered.
Then the bottle went around, once, twice, and half-way before stopping between Spoke and Parrot. Without a word Spoke held up his hands for a rock-paper-scissors game. Spoke won, of course, he was weirdly good at rock-paper-scissors.
“So, Parrot, truth or dare?” Wemmbu smiled mischievously.
“Truth,” he answered easily.
“Boring,” Flame commented. Parrot promptly ignored him.
“Hhhmmm.. What’s the worst advice someone’s given you?” Wemmbu queried.
Parrot didn’t even skip a beat when he answered, “Almost everything Spoke tells me to do.”
“Wha- rude!” Spoke protested. “I give great advice!”
“You once told me to do an exam with the strategy of ‘winging it without looking at the questions and only at the answers’.”
“It can work!”
“It didn’t have any multiple choice questions??”
“That sounds like a you problem-”
“Alright,” Flame interrupted with a light sigh, “Parrot, spin the bottle.”
The mentioned student rolled his eyes, but spun it regardless. And it landed on Flame. “Dare,” he said quickly. “Because I’m not boring.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Parrot huffed half-heartedly. “I dare you to read off the most recent conversation you’ve had via text.”
Flame paused. Then he took out his phone and presumably checked. And he immediately snorted while looking away, before grabbing the shot glass.
“Really?” Wemmbu gaped, trying not to laugh.
“Already!?” Spoke grinned. “What was the conversation??”
“I’m taking a shot for a reason, dumbass,” Flame snickered.
He had some water first before he filled the glass. Then he took the shot. The taste was smooth, a hint of honey, and a little fruit maybe. He glanced at the bottle, properly reading the label. It was some kind of Irish whiskey, which made a lot of sense.
Flame rarely had alcohol, honestly. He tried one or three a few days after he turned twenty-one, just from curiosity. One time when he was stressing over something. And then right now. So yeah, not much experience for it.
“Well, spin the bottle,” Spoke said.
He spun it, and they all waited. During those few seconds Flame had a little more water, as Parrot was making his eye contact not subtle at all. The bottle landed between Flame himself, and Wemmbu. Though Flame had just gone, so they defaulted it to Wemmbu. And then he complained, where Parrot so helpfully pointed out how the bottle was closer to Wemmbu by just a few inches anyways.
“So?” Flame raised a brow.
“Ugh, dare,” Wemmbu sighed.
“Say that I’m stronger than you,” Flame grinned.
“Truth,” Wemmbu said instead.
“You can’t just change your answer,” Spoke giggled.
“I can and am,” Wemmbu protested playfully.
“Well then,” Flame shrugged, “why won’t you admit I’m stronger than you?”
…
“I’m gonna take the shot,” Wemmbu snickered. He poured one, and stared at it for a second. Then he took it, and blinked for a second. He was not expecting the smooth, floral flavor. Or the hint of honey and fruit. “Well that wasn’t what I was expecting,” he said, looking between the glass and bottle.
And then the game continued.
~~~
By the end of the game the bottle was a little more than half-way empty. Parrot had a total of five shots, Spoke six, Flame four, and Wemmbu two. Safe to say that they were all certainly drunk. Which then led to.. Interesting events.
Spoke, somehow, became even more energetic and talkative. Flame was also more chatty, though less argumentative. Parrot somehow was acting like he wasn’t impaired when he definitely was. Meanwhile Wemmbu looked like he was about to fall asleep.
The three that were able to keep up conversation talked about anything that came to their minds. People, work, gossip, random things that made no sense with or without context, and plenty more. Wemmbu occasionally murmured something, but mostly watched with an unfocused gaze. It was all pretty blurry.
At some point Spoke started telling jokes that were more often than not horrible, but kept telling them because it made Flame’s drunken mind laugh every time. Parrot merely groaned at the sound while he kept an eye on the two, before he looked toward Wemmbu. Wemmbu, who was.. Seemingly sleeping already.
Despite that, Spoke and Flame were anything but quiet. It was honestly a miracle how Wemmbu didn’t wake up to their loud laughter. Even more so how Parrot hadn’t told them to shut up quite yet.
Somehow they ended up playing some kind of card game. It might have been uno? Whatever it was, it went.. How you’d expect. Spoke tried to cheat yet kept accidently showing his cards. Flame managed to win every single round by simply guessing, and Parrot didn’t win once because he could not focus on whatever he was doing.
Eventually though, after what could have been fifteen minutes or could have been three hours, they all settled down. It didn’t take long before Parrot began dozing off on the couch, or for Spoke to be out cold on top of his sleeping bag. And Wemmbu, who had already been asleep the entire time, was curled up in the many blankets he somehow obtained. Flame was still awake, trying to fight sleep while laying down. Though he soon enough lost that fight.
~~~
Spoke woke up with a pounding headache, and very tired muscles. Which makes sense, he had like six shots, so he was probably hungover. He might have drank a little more after that, actually; he can’t quite remember.. Either way, despite the minor pain, he had no regrets. Though as soon as he could he grabbed his water bottle, that thankfully still had a good amount of water in it. Mainly because his mouth felt as dry as a desert.
He then looked around, and tried not to laugh at what he saw.
Parrot looked like he might fall off the couch any second now, though he was still very much asleep. After thinking for a moment, Spoke realized that Parrot might wake up with a small hangover as well. That’ll be fun.
Wemmbu was practically surrounded and nearly buried in blankets. Spoke had a hazy memory of tossing some onto him. So there was a good chance that Spoke, Parrot, and/or Flame gave Wemmbu most of the blankets. That or he just managed to collect them somehow.
Flame was actually the only one besides Spoke that was awake. He was in the kitchen, seemingly making breakfast. Which smelled great so far, by the way. With the blurry memories that Spoke had, he found the contract between regular Flame and drunk Flame very funny. He was definitely going to tease him about it later.
Anywho- the rest of the morning was.. Well, it wasn’t exactly a clear breeze. Parrot woke up eventually, managing to save himself before he could fall onto the floor. He, Spoke, and Flame had breakfast while waiting for Wemmbu to wake up. Who, after another hour, was still not awake. So eventually they just ripped the bandage and woke him up themselves.
From there it was more miscellaneous fun. They played a few random games again, and at one point they were honestly just complaining about work and school. There was also a little of what could be considered gossip, though it wasn’t that deep.
“We should do this again sometime,” Spoke was saying. He, Parrot, and Wemmbu were getting their stuff together to leave as Flame tidied up a little more.
“Oh, a hundred percent,” Wemmbu agreed.
“Maybe without the drinks, though,” Parrot sighed. Though his tone was still rather fond. “I’d rather not wake up with a hangover.”
“That’s on you for taking so many shots, bro,” Flame snickered.
“You all ask terrible questions and make terrible dares,” Parrot argued playfully.
“We ask amazing questions that you just don’t want to answer,” Spoke commented. Wemmbu nodded with those words.
“Yeah, yeah,” Parrot rolled his eyes. “I’ll see you all later.”
“See ya,” Flame called.
“Oh, wait, Parrot can we carpool?” Spoke called, following as Parrot made his way out. Flame and Wemmbu could easily hear the two’s banter as they left, Parrot eventually giving in while complaining that Spoke should just get a license already.
“I’m going to be so honest, after the drinking I remember like nothing,” Wemmbu commented.
“Bro, you fell asleep so quickly,” Flame snorted. “And then you stayed asleep until we woke you up this morning.”
“Damn,” Wemmbu hummed. “Welp, I’mma take my leave.”
“Don’t die,” Flame said off-handedly.
“Pft, no promises,” Wemmbu called as he opened the door.
Yeah. They’d definitely have to do hangouts like that more often.
